The fight against a disease which takes young and old goes on

238

It is the indiscriminate nature of life that can shock us the most. Liam Miller, 36, is critically ill with that most feared of diseases, which has taken so many in our families, and our own CQN community. Legend has it that Sir Alex Ferguson came to Celtic Park to watch 17-year-old Vincent Kompany, but was blown away by Miller, who got on the end of an incredible move to score, as Celtic humbled Anderlecht in the Champions League.

This may or may not be true, I suspect Ferguson knew about Miller before travelling north, but the player’s potential was irresistible, either way. He was the brightest graduate of the Celtic youth system since Paul McStay – delivering on the same level Kieran Tierney is now.

Ferguson offered a contract five time more lucrative than Celtic and Liam was off to Manchester, as Celtic fans bemoaned the apparent futility of a development system that took years between producing players of quality, only for them to leave after delivering for a few months.

For Liam, that was the high water mark, he never against reached those levels. Let’s hope he wins his fight against a disease which takes young and old, often as a consequence of a genetic lottery. Decades of fundraising and education (including by many on here) have made a real impact on survival rates, but much still needs to be done. And for goodness sake, don’t sacrifice your life for the tobacco industry.

  1. Baffling to watch a team from a country known for technical prowess resort to hopeful punts and no other strategy.

Shocked at how poor Italy have been.

Only Immoble,Chiellini and El Sharawi have shown up..

    5 minutes added.Not sure why.

ACGR,who coined the term “hootenanny” for the dayoooot, stencilled BMCUWP HOOTENANNY onto a massive tricolour. Just around the same time as the loyalist demonstrations demanding the return of “the Fleg” to Belfast City Hall.

    So the name stuck…

  5. Italy out.

    Have to say i’m shocked.

    Their ineptitude was staggering.

Fair play to the ref who seemed even handed under great pressure.

FIFA ,Messi and Ronaldo could not have helped this poor team.

Surprised that the Italian’s had a coach so devoid of idea’s was this lot.

Don’t get to see the Italian league but surely they have better than this?

  6. Just watching Buffon being interviewed. The great man is crying, but making no excuses. Passing of an era.

  7. Glad for Mikael Lustig, one who gets Celtic big time. Great servant of the Club, one of the Invincibles. Hope Ralston is ready for the CL qualifiers next season, as, I imagine, Gamboa will be Russia bound too.

  8. Well done Herr Lustig @ co….awfy braw

Aye,money is what drives the movers and shakers. Fear is what keeps the media and SFA,etc,in line.

The irony is that the money will be screwed from the peepul who are prepared to do the dirty work. It would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic.

  10. On the subject of FLEGS we have one on our club wall

donated by the sister of Packy Bonnar when she visited

our club, now i know a lot of you don’t have much time

for Packy , on tele that is , but he played for Celtic and

his family are Celtic to the core, as for the Fleg, it’s a

wonderful creation of THE FIELDS OF ATHENRYE.

  11. Last 6 World Cup playoff games….

    Honduras 0-0 Australia

    New Zealand 0-0 Peru

    Denmark 0-0 Ireland

    Switzerland 0-0 N Ireland

    Greece 0-0 Croatia

    Italy 0-0 Sweden

Now 569 mins (9.5 hours) since last goal when Sweden scored on Friday.

This world cup has come to early for England and combined with a poor coach i expect the usual from them.

Their success resulting in two world cup victories and Euro final defeat at younger levels suggests they are getting it right for the future.

If they can get the right coach to harness all that talent then they have a very real chance of winning Euros in 2020 and World cup in 2022.

They have administrators with forward vision.

  13. Glad to see Sweden qualify for World Cup Russia. Gives Mikael Lustig a great summer. I am sure we will benefit from his exuberance on Saturday in Dingwall. Italy are rank rotten now. Sad to watch.

  14. Zbyszek

Jan Tomasewski was the English media’s clown. I was 7 year old watching that England v Polska match in Wembley. He became my goalie hero that night. Poland should have won the World Cup in West Germany ’74. I was devastated in the semi final result.

  15. Good luck to Ireland tomorrow. Italy were poor and have been for a long time. Sad thing is it’s not going to improve anytime soon

  16. Fan a tic- i was being facecious…..its the kind of guff you will get on talksport tomorrow

  17. Glad to see Sweden make it (for big Micks sake) but sad for Gianluigi Buffon. Was the first to congratulate Martin O Neill and Roy Keane when Ireland defeated Italy to make it through to knock out stage at Euros last year. Same tonight with Swedish players. I think he is a class act as a keeper and a person.

  18. used to see lots of Italian football on TV here … but, now, it is all of pay channels, so I only see the odd game when they play in europe ….

those of you who see it more often … what has gone wrong?

  19. WITS

My grandad’s namesake Thomas Delaney thinks that trying to pierce the Irish defence, was like trying to open a can of beans with his bare hands.

Hope the trend continues tomorrow, and James McClean can score another important goal for Ireland. Fingers Xd

  20. Thanks Bhoy’s for birthday wishes earlier today , cannae believe i’ve got a bhus pass now ! Wonder if i can use it in Dublin ? My good lady is taking me there tomorrow for 2 nights , well pleased about going back to my favourite city ! God bless Liam Miller !

  21. Gearoid

Noticed tonight when the Italians booed the Swedish national anthem pre match, that Buffon looked annoyed by this. Applauded warmly at end of anthem. The man is top class professional.

  22. Ritchie & Park Road67: Breithlá sona daoibh.

    Well done Mikel.

DD: Hope you are recovering. Have the flu myself. Had to go into work today but taking tomorrow off.

  23. BADA BING

    I know.

Wonder which English player will be elevated to worlds best before the tournament begins by the media.

Straight pick between Kane and Alli. Both are very good but the worlds best?

Remember when they told us Rooney was better than Messi.

  24. Zbyszek

Deyna was the best player in the world when I was 8, in my mind. Danny McGrain and Kenny Dalglish were my other 2 Celtic heroes at that time, but Deyna was the greatest. :)

  25. What is the Stars on

    Delaneys

The Danish have been very cocky in the build up to the tie.

Before Saturday’s game their manager made the most ridiculous statement ever when he said Nil all would be perfectly acceptable as that would give them 120 minutes to score in Dublin..let the arrogance of that nonsense sink in .

  26. Almore

Thanks mate. This has been going on for 3 weeks. Chest infection has floored me. Need to live in a less damp toon I think?
