The final curtain but what next?

440

In what increasingly looks like a facsimile of updates on the defence of Bagdad in 2003, Duff and Phelps continue to accentuate the positives about the potential bidders for Rangers Football Club or its assets but the charade is finally running out of acts.

This afternoon’s withdrawal of interest by the Blue Knight (singular), Paul Murray, the accountant who was a director of Rangers during the hugely controversial EBT years, and Brian Kennedy, should allow minds to focus on the most important question, what next?

Here’s a prediction for you:

Rangers Football Club will play their last game on Sunday 13 May 2012.  One day next week, possibly even before the appeal against the SFA Disciplinary Tribunal punishment, one, or perhaps more, of the prominent players who have been jockeying for position recently will commence proceedings to buy a club in the Scottish Football League, or form a new club, ask for permission to play at Airdrie or Paisley, and apply for SFA membership.  If membership is granted, an application will be lodged to join the Scottish Football League as soon as a vacancy becomes available.

In time Craig Whyte will sell or otherwise lose control of Ibrox Stadium, and if it is still in an operable condition, the football team hoping to profit from the demise of Rangers will look to acquire rights to play there.

You have witnessed an incredible period of Scottish social history in recent months.

  1. NEIL Lennon believes it is “grossly unfair” that the Scottish Football Association have named the three-man panel who are to hear Rangers’ appeal against SFA sanctions next Wednesday.

The administration-hit Ibrox club were hit with a 12-month transfer embargo and a £160,000 fine for breaches of regulations.

The SFA decided to name Lord Carloway, Partick Thistle chairman Allan Cowan and Spartans chairman Craig Graham after consultation with the police and after the original tribunal members were revealed last month.

Before Sunday’s Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Hearts at Celtic Park on Sunday, the Hoops boss expressed surprise that the panel had been named and then said: “I think it is grossly unfair. These people do it voluntarily, they do it because they love the game, and do it for the right reasons.

“I don’t think there is any need but there you go, that’s the decision the SFA have made, so you need to go and ask them why they have done that.

“I just think it puts extra pressure on these people and they are under enough pressure as it is.”

Manager Ally McCoist had called for the original panel members to be named after Rangers were hit with the sanctions.

And he today welcomed the SFA`s decision to name those who will hear the appeal.

He said: “We just want transparency and clarity and I`m delighted that the appeals panel has been named.

“The three gentlemen have got a decision to make and we obviously hope it`s a good one for us.

“We will react to the decision when it`s made.”

McCoist has yet to read the SFA document but expects a fair hearing next Wednesday.

He said: “I haven`t ploughed through the 27,000 words this morning. We have been training and I didn`t have time to do that.

“Andrew Dickson will certainly be reading it and, if I don`t read it, I will get the important bullet points from Andrew.”

On the outcome of the appeal, McCoist added: “I`m scared to forecast or guess anything at the moment.

“We will get a fair hearing and hopefully the appeal will go our way.

“It`s got the potential to damage us like you`ve got no idea.

“Effectively the worst scenario is that the embargo stays and we are not allowed to sign players for a year and half our squad goes in the summer and we are left with a pretty depressing situation.”

  3. NEIL Lennon´s side will be presented with the SPL trophy at Celtic Park this Sunday after the final league game of the season. And it´s sure to be another day of celebration at the stadium as the match against Hearts is completely sold out.

Supporters will pack Paradise for the trophy day, when the champions will also be looking for the victory which would give them a points tally of 93 points, beating last season´s total.

The Hoops have thoroughly deserved their title triumph this season, overturning a 15-point deficit and going on a 17-game winning run in the league. Neil Lennon’s side have also recorded 24 clean sheets this season – a new SPL record – while they’ve scored more goals and conceded fewer than every other team in the top flight.

And the Celtic supporters have been there every step of the way, cheering the team on to an impressive championship success. This Sunday, the sell-out out crowd will acclaim the champions and welcome the return of the SPL trophy back to its rightful place at Paradise.

As with Falkirks situation, they still wanted to get promotion, then have a new ground. So they still had an advantage over the other teams, who had already spent money on compliant grounds.

I remember thinking at the time of the debate about Inverness getting to go up, that it was wrong. That they should not be allowed either. Something in the back of my mind says there were differences though.

Perhaps Inverness should not have been allowed up either, but I dont think Falkirk should have been allowed, its was financial doping of sorts, with other clubs hindered by paying for new grounds, while Falkirk had not.

I think the best the Huns can hope for now is that people remember who they were in 10 years.

  6. gordybhoy64, Gordon_J, BMCUW,

By all accounts the Mitchell/Beale consortium was in pole position to take over control until their plans to install a new manager were thwarted by the sudden & untimely death of Fat Pat.

  7. The group in pole position to buy Rangers is fronted by former Sheffield United chief executive Charles Green.

His group joined the race to rescue the crisis-hit club last week when previous favourite Bill Miller withdrew his bid.

Little is known about the rest of Green’s consortium but it is understood there are links to Singapore.

During Green’s stint at Bramall Lane the Blades were listed on the stock exchange in 1997, but results on and off the field were disappointing.

He quit a year after the floatation and re-emerged in football shortly after as chairman of the football agency Proactive Sports. The Cheshire-based firm had a number of leading stars on its books, including Andrew Cole, Stan Collymore and Wayne Rooney.

But Green left Proactive in 2003 and has since held a number of directorships at medical science firms. He is currently a non-executive chairman of the Singapore-based Nova Resources Ltd.

There are currently four parties with bids on the table for Rangers, who have been in administration since February 14, and a decision on which bid will be accepted is expected on Saturday.

Singaporean businessman Bill Ng had previously bid for Rangers and was understood to have re-entered the race after American Miller dropped out of the race.

However, it is not known whether Green and Ng are part of the same consortium.

  8. Just a thought, will Andrew Ellis not have something to say about Craigy boy transferring/selling his shares? I thought the bold Andy was making a legal claim to 25% of said shares, unless of course Ellis is part of the LBC, mmmm. Of course CW could probably sort it out by sending Mr Ellis a 25 pence postal order.

Congratulations philhoopyloguewantsthebighouseofpainclosedasap, don’t forget to add that to your CV, I would love to have an RFCIA ( £1) for every time you tell that story.
