The first trophy comes home

185

From the stands, you follow most goals as they mature from chances, but some happen so quickly and unexpectedly, that in the middle of celebrations, there is a part of your brain that wonders, what actually happened there?

Twice yesterday, Celtic constructed a goal from seemingly nowhere.  Hibernian took the lead, we took kick-off and Callum McGregor had possession around halfway on the touchline.  There followed a 40 yard pass and the most sublime touch imaginable.

Kyogo Furuhashi was facing away from goal, his body on the wrong side of the ball.  The keeper narrowed the angle but before anyone in the stadium knew what was happening, the Japanese striker found the corner of the net with a left foot shot.  David Gray, the Hibernian interim manager would be entitled to ask, “What happened?”  There were 10 seconds between kick-off and goal.

I was fortunate enough to be at Hampden yesterday and at Celtic Park on 27 August 2000 and witnessed two incredible lobs sail into the net from two incredible strikers.  The marvel that Henrik Larsson’s goal against Rangers induced was every bit as evident yesterday.  After that game in 2000, Martin O’Neill spoke of his ire when the ball left Henrik’s foot, “Players try these lobs but never work.”  For most occasions, he was not wrong.  The talent required is exceptional.

The first thing Kyogo did was catch the eye of Tom Rogic, Tom knew what to do next.  The Hibs defence were not involved in the covert communication, so were late to the party, so much so, that if you watch the replay (I’m sure you have), Kyogo has time to check his run and wait for the ball to drop a little.  The finish, ooft!  What a special talent we have.

Much of the credit for a great final goes to Hibernian.  Overwhelmed by talent and resources, they were within the width of a post in the 94th minute of sending the game into extra time.  For a team that never managed to stage an attack until a defensive lapse gave them a corner kick in the 51st minute, that was a performance at the limit of their collective abilities.

Kevin Nisbet got the better of Carl Starfelt throughout.  On one occasion, winning a corner kick that let to the Hibs goal, on another, it took the first of two magnificent saves from Joe Hart to deny the Hibs striker.  Without Hart, it could have been a different story.  Teams we face in the coming weeks will have a plan for Starfelt, so must we.

That’s the first of our trophies back home.  The weeks and months ahead will bring greater challenges, but amid the burning embers of 2021, we assembled talented people for the cause. They now look like writing the next great chapter in the Celtic Story.

Starfelt will be gone when Jullien comes back – as we near the first anniversary

of his injury. I’ve completely given up on seeing him again.

    —-

    It looks that way.

Jullien was due back in late September, then October, now that we’re in December, Ange refuses to give any updates on his progress.

James Forrest is another worry. We’ve had very little from James for 18 months now.

Hopefully both players can contribute to a successful season but I fear these injuries or series of injuries, will prove impossible for either to overcome.

  2. Plenty of updates on Jullien.Recovered, been training, couple of minor setbacks.Ange wants him 100%..Nothing mysterious about it.

  3. Read an advert that pops up very time I log in to CQN.

Get your Bentley Flying Spur finance available here, mind you you’ll need £38,000 just for the deposit, then its a mere £1,600 a month for 35 months.

The time frame for his return is a mystery.

  5. Still in awe at the sheer quality of both goals yesterday. Watched the highlights on Premier and Craigan described the 2nd as ‘a simple ball over the top and a simple run’. Goodness me. It was world class all round and uber intelligence play by Tom and Kyogo. The finish itself was made to look easy …but a bouncing ball sliding and spinning away from him while he was outside the posts, Kyogo hooked it over the keeper and into the net, a quite stunning finish. What a bloody signing.

  6. When he is 100%.Could be next week,January, whenever. No use worrying over it.Ange seems perfectly cool bout it.A couple of minor setbacks.I would guess after the break.

  7. The touch and instant control were magnificent for 1st goal also.Oh,and the finish.

    Magnificent .

  8. No matter what the covid situation is with St Mirren the game must go ahead or they forfeit.

    Simple as that.

  9. David66 it’ll be on, don’t forget sevco have a home game against the Buddies on Boxing Day, although their next two games after that are Pittodrie and Parkheid, lookout shutdown here we come.

Remember prior tae playing us in 2020 in which should ha been slippys last game, they were allowed a European game on the Thursday night against a German side who came from a country where Covid was rampant, it was all about the money, but our game 3 days later, even though it was their home game, was binned.

A humiliation could possibly have cost them SBs so that wisnae going tae be allowed tae happen.

Awrite Tontine, don’t keep us in suspenders, where did they actually come fae?

  11. Great win yesterday with two fantastic goals

We have the spine of a decent team with Hart, CVV, Calmac and Kyogo, and if we can add 2/3 bits of quality we can push on in 2nd half of season, particularly as I suspect our key opposition are benefitting (amongst other things) from new manager bounce.

I would still like to see more physical presence in defence, Starfelt is a good player but imho currently lacks the upper body strength to hold guys off at set pieces.

    Mikey J will come good.

He has been very unfortunate with injuries and whilst guys of a similar age have played 150 pro games he is around 50.

One big goal will transform his confidence.

  13. ClashCityBhoy,

I agree with post but would add Rogic & Jota to top quality list

I too am a Mikey J. fan & believe he will come good.

  14. Don’t know if Mikey will come good……….i hope he does but right now he frustrates the hell out of me.

  15. Carl made 2 mistakes at the most 3, but, he more than made up for that with the number of mistakes he didn’t make, what were they? Every time he brought the ball out from the back to start attacks and every time he passed the ball successfully to a team mate and every time he won a tackle and a header, all those far outweighed the 2 or 3 mistakes he made. A defenders role in the team is very similar to the goalkeepers as mistakes can lead to the opponents scoring., hence the reason why they are remembered long after the game has finished. Before Sunday’s cup final Kyogo had squandered loads of opportunities to score in the previous games absolutely loads, but, like all good players, Carl Starfelt included, he doesn’t hide he comes back and shows exactly why he should be in the team, with the 2 goals he scored in the Cup Final. It won’t be long until Carl shows us once again what a really good CB he is also. por cierto

  16. The hand of God on

Loved Sunday’s final great advert for Scottish football, two sets of passionate fans and both teams going for it (well Hibs waited til the 2nd half).Strange one that my mate and I had the same seats for both the semi final and final was almost like being back in the 94/95 Hampden season

  17. Good morning cqn from a cold and frosty morning in the Garngad

Tontine thanks for the reply about Buddies game.

Let’s get the job done tomorrow night and get another 3 points on the board.

Every administration in the UK is playing politics with Covid/Omicron.

If the risk has been identified as critical then why on earth aren’t being measures implemented immediately.

A bit like 999 saying “your house is on fire, OK, we’ll send the Fire Service on Sunday”

With a R rate of 4, ONE infected person has the possibility of infecting c16,000 others in a week, e.g. 4, 16, 64, 256, 1024, 4096, 16,384. Where is the sense in putting action off?

Do 1 ya racist skank, its hardly a day gone by where you are not weaponizing covid re care homes in Scotland.

So says the CHUMP who claimed to have went to the League cup Final less than two days ago, and who sat and MINGLED beside almost 50,000 other punters…

IF you really wanted measures put in place, why did you put yourself and your family and others at risk on Sunday at Hampdump ?

    Hypocrite.

According to YOU…you live in England, so why dont you slag off your Tory CULT Hero Boris ?

  23. St Mirren reportedly left with ten outfield players and have drafted in the youths to see out their next couple of games. Still though, I’d start our strongest side and rest players only after we’ve a comfortable lead. If we’re in a position to take Kyogo and Rogic off at HT then do that. Far better that than having to take them on to get a goal as the game wears down.

That news from Wales is ominous.

Celtic should flex its muscles and lobby hard for postponements.
