The football FX business, hounding a manager, Road to Lisbon

486

On Tuesday we covered the financial benefit Celtic experienced after Brexit due to the fall in the value of the pound against the euro – the currency Champions League payments are denominated in. Today Manchester United revealed a different aspect to the same economic calamity.

Much of Manchester United’s debt is denominated in US dollars. As a consequence of Brexit, the pound also collapsed against the dollar; this alone added an astonishing £88m to the club’s debt figure.

I see Newco fans are busying themselves debating who should replace Warburton as their next manager. Fans do this, it’s a Pavlovian response to unfulfilled expectations. Many feel it’s a right and appropriate discourse, but watching from the outside you can see how destructive it is.

When fans emotionally move on from a manager it is difficult to back his team when it needs it most. Should Morton [Celtic development FC] have the temerity to open the scoring at Ibrox this weekend all of this managerial window-shopping will fuel exactly what the home team don’t need.

There are few things we can learn from that lot, mostly ‘what not to do’ related items like this.

The Road to Lisbon May 2017 Cycle

The Road to Lisbon

I am genuinely in awe of the fans who will cycle from Celtic Park to Estadio Nacional, Lisbon, in May to raise money for your Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in Crossfire. It is an incredible personal undertaking by each of them, which will bring aid and comfort to many in need.

The project is being driven by one of our own, Mouldy67 – who is a role model to us all. This is from his MyDonate page:

My name is Paul Muldoon, I am delighted to be part of a group of 28 Celts, who plan to cycle from Celtic Park to Lisbon. Each of our group will be funding the cost of the professional support company, accommodation, food and travel by themselves.

We aim to raise thousands of pounds to support three charities close to our hearts; The Celtic Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in crossfire.

The plan is to depart Celtic Park on Thursday May 11, 2017 and will include 13 cycling days, spread over 14 days. We hope to arrive in Lisbon on May 25, 2017.

This project moves a level beyond mere respect, please do what you can to support here.

Can you have a wee word in Brendan’s ear

He is getting quoted basically saying we should invest from a position of Strength

I wonder what happens in an investigation of this type when it becomes clear that documents were shredded, do the police go after the shredders. I seem to remember way back at the beginning of this saga there were some shredding co. links to the Brox of Doom no??

To investigate this saga truly would mean mean ruffling the feathers of people who believe themselves to perhaps be a cut above us ordinary mortals.

    I remain hopeful:))

I have often wondered what prevents government papers being shredded, perhaps our more informed legal minds on here could enlighten us.

Or maybe it’s a question Private Eye would be better placed to answer.

In an age of dwindling print sales globally,Private Eye’s success is a welcome piece of good news.

I wonder how they achieved this?

Everyone else has seen their sales plummet, even as they play to their demographic and to their advertisers by selective reporting/investigation. Yet PE ploughs it’s lonely furrow of success, ripping up the rulebook and sticking to their original formula of irreverence, humour, and twisting the knife in all and sundry who warrant it.

    You’d think they’d realise that it won’t work,everyone else can’t be wrong.

Similarly,Economics undergraduates at Manchester have finally got some success having railed against being taught the same curriculum of failure taught to those who brought us the 2008 Crash. It’s in The Guardian, but NATKNOW will rip me a new one if I c&p from it,closely followed by IMATIM(!)

  7. i wonder who was responsible for the raid on Ibrox back in the day when their computers were removed and forensically examined?

I shall be there tomorrow and will give Rubicon III a cheer.

    Hope you are well

  9. My Bhoy can’t get to the game tomorrow and looking to offload his £20 Safe Standing ticket. No reasonable offer refused. You can get me on jobobaldie@yahoo.co.uk . Can meet pre match at CQN Corner. No obligation to stand next to me as I’m not anticipating a sell out. And anyway I might wander to the other end for the 2nd half if there are plenty of available seats.

  10. If certain government papers are so sensitive that they will not be released for 100 years, it does beg the question: Why were they not Shredded ????

Alternatively, maybe they have been shredded as none of us will be about in 100 years to argue the point.

  13. Hugely impressed by what Brendan Rodgers had to say in the CQN Article titled ‘‘I’M PREPARED TO SMASH CELTIC TRANSFER RECORD,’ RODGERS’.

I think if you are a potential rival, or a SPFL or European team scheduled to play Celtic, that the article could easily be renamed ‘Be afraid (of Celtic), Be very afraid (of Celtic)!’ :-)

I just love Brendan Rodgers and his ‘this is just the beginning of our journey, and I demand that we get better every day!’ attitude. Who knows where this journey will take us…

  14. Each passing day I am more and more convinced that our manager is the best thing to have happened to Celtic (in my time of watching) since Mr Stein walked through the front door as manager.

  15. Ohhhhhhhhh! There are a few in here going to need some medical help after reading this….I am adding a disclaimer to this post on behalf of myself and my family, I’m just the messenger, I didn’t write it the article, but I sure as f… wish I had, and the few in here, you know who you are, I strongly advise you not to read this post, it could be a health hazard to members of the C T, and the clique………GIRFUYs

  19. I wonder how much Celtic get from the Scottish Cup ?

Will the money compensate for the empty seats ?

IMO , Ticket sales should be considered before any game goes out live. It could easily be written into the contracts.
