The football FX business, hounding a manager, Road to Lisbon

486

On Tuesday we covered the financial benefit Celtic experienced after Brexit due to the fall in the value of the pound against the euro – the currency Champions League payments are denominated in. Today Manchester United revealed a different aspect to the same economic calamity.

Much of Manchester United’s debt is denominated in US dollars. As a consequence of Brexit, the pound also collapsed against the dollar; this alone added an astonishing £88m to the club’s debt figure.

I see Newco fans are busying themselves debating who should replace Warburton as their next manager. Fans do this, it’s a Pavlovian response to unfulfilled expectations. Many feel it’s a right and appropriate discourse, but watching from the outside you can see how destructive it is.

When fans emotionally move on from a manager it is difficult to back his team when it needs it most. Should Morton [Celtic development FC] have the temerity to open the scoring at Ibrox this weekend all of this managerial window-shopping will fuel exactly what the home team don’t need.

There are few things we can learn from that lot, mostly ‘what not to do’ related items like this.

The Road to Lisbon May 2017 Cycle

The Road to Lisbon

I am genuinely in awe of the fans who will cycle from Celtic Park to Estadio Nacional, Lisbon, in May to raise money for your Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in Crossfire. It is an incredible personal undertaking by each of them, which will bring aid and comfort to many in need.

The project is being driven by one of our own, Mouldy67 – who is a role model to us all. This is from his MyDonate page:

My name is Paul Muldoon, I am delighted to be part of a group of 28 Celts, who plan to cycle from Celtic Park to Lisbon. Each of our group will be funding the cost of the professional support company, accommodation, food and travel by themselves.

We aim to raise thousands of pounds to support three charities close to our hearts; The Celtic Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in crossfire.

The plan is to depart Celtic Park on Thursday May 11, 2017 and will include 13 cycling days, spread over 14 days. We hope to arrive in Lisbon on May 25, 2017.

This project moves a level beyond mere respect, please do what you can to support here.

  3. Could it be that the people behind “one of the people” are a bit posh and have surnames for first names?

Peepil written in standard English seems very strange and, well, a bit posh and just not right. Like swearing in the wrong part of the sentence or referring to an excited appendage as a stander

All I can find on google is the Hull Collaborative Teaching School which is probably not right

  6. Por Ciero, don’t gloat,as much as we don’t like Sevco,I’m quite happy the way Celtic are playing good football, and winning games,it’s easy to gloat, how other teams are playing, but I never take anything for granted, because,it could turn the other way,and then if it’s good for the goose,it’s good for the gander,

  8. The current Currant Buns (see what I did there, alliteration and bake-off fans?) remind me of Ronny Deila’s Celtic project – a team capable of putting together 20 minutes of decent play but lack the class or fitness to maintain a system that’s attacking/damaging facet demands precision and high energy.

Like RD, Warbiola seems blinkered to his ideology and unwilling to be flexible to suit the quality of player available i.e mostly pish.

Even a half-baked coach like McInnes can adjust his tema to nullify them. Ian Cathro – who may have mor eabout him – looks the type of underrated modern-thinking tactician who could do them a lot of damage with even his limited Diets resources. Can see Hearts taking second if they get a run together.

Long may Warbiola hold the metaphorical saddle of the effete wee Dutch mercenary.

  9. Tom Rogic – no ned to rush him back.

Get him fit and tuned and raring to go in the CL qualifiers.

come this Sunday, the 22nd, it will be 10 years since he paid Lawrence Marlborough pounds 6million for the club

*naw he didnae, you the taxpayers did as well as a suitcase full of gene tunney which allegedly made its way across the pond.

There have been times in his 10 years when he has taken deidc somewhere between £15m and pounds £20m into debt and he knows that if this season goes belly up like the last one he could be looking at a potential debt of £20m.

*again it was you the brit taxpayers that paid for this.

Perhaps as much as £60m has been spent on players and I have even paid in about pounds 1m in hospitality but never taken a salary from the place. “I get six complimentary tickets the same as everyone else and if I want extra I have to pay for them the same as everyone else. “There are no free lunches for group captain douglas bader at hades and I have never taken part or been at the centre of any of the numerous victory celebrations we have had.”

*as we used tae say in primary “and the band played believe it if you like”.

There are none so blind as those who will not, or choose not to, see.

I sometimes like to look back at a day in history and jog the old memory.. It’s funny how the further back you go, the memories are more vivid. The experts say it’s to do with happy times and developing years 10-20.

Anyway I checked out Brendan’s birthday,Friday Jan 26 1973. The following day my late pal Cass and me went through to Airdrie, where we suffered a 2-1 defeat. Somebody will remember the wee guy who starred for Airdrie that day.

From there straight into town in a good mood as 8 in a row was on the cards anyway. Few pints in the Howf, Chinese, then up Tiffany’s. Probably whole day for a under a tenner, third of my wages.

I agree Tony.. would love us to be able to sign Pat Roberts.

He is emerging as a really influential member of the team.

Seems to be adding a bit of consistency to his play as well.

Only stumbling block I can see would be his wages as I don’t think Man City would be hard to deal with.

I agree, if we have stepped up a level in coaching staff, which I think we have, it’s only just a matter of time that we up the anti with the playing staff, it’s way above me on the bases of how to work that out, but Peter Lawwell seems to know what he is doing, even though he has little distractions here and there to sort out other things with some fan groups who are in a minority but never seem to be happy, .

I trust the board and the coaching staff to continue sailing into the sun, and I’m enjoying every second of it, long may it continue, happy times are here again,.
