The football FX business, hounding a manager, Road to Lisbon

486

On Tuesday we covered the financial benefit Celtic experienced after Brexit due to the fall in the value of the pound against the euro – the currency Champions League payments are denominated in. Today Manchester United revealed a different aspect to the same economic calamity.

Much of Manchester United’s debt is denominated in US dollars. As a consequence of Brexit, the pound also collapsed against the dollar; this alone added an astonishing £88m to the club’s debt figure.

I see Newco fans are busying themselves debating who should replace Warburton as their next manager. Fans do this, it’s a Pavlovian response to unfulfilled expectations. Many feel it’s a right and appropriate discourse, but watching from the outside you can see how destructive it is.

When fans emotionally move on from a manager it is difficult to back his team when it needs it most. Should Morton [Celtic development FC] have the temerity to open the scoring at Ibrox this weekend all of this managerial window-shopping will fuel exactly what the home team don’t need.

There are few things we can learn from that lot, mostly ‘what not to do’ related items like this.

The Road to Lisbon May 2017 Cycle

The Road to Lisbon

I am genuinely in awe of the fans who will cycle from Celtic Park to Estadio Nacional, Lisbon, in May to raise money for your Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in Crossfire. It is an incredible personal undertaking by each of them, which will bring aid and comfort to many in need.

The project is being driven by one of our own, Mouldy67 – who is a role model to us all. This is from his MyDonate page:

My name is Paul Muldoon, I am delighted to be part of a group of 28 Celts, who plan to cycle from Celtic Park to Lisbon. Each of our group will be funding the cost of the professional support company, accommodation, food and travel by themselves.

We aim to raise thousands of pounds to support three charities close to our hearts; The Celtic Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in crossfire.

The plan is to depart Celtic Park on Thursday May 11, 2017 and will include 13 cycling days, spread over 14 days. We hope to arrive in Lisbon on May 25, 2017.

This project moves a level beyond mere respect, please do what you can to support here.

I sometimes like to look back at a day in history and jog the old memory.. It’s funny how the further back you go, the memories are more vivid. The experts say it’s to do with happy times and developing years 10-20.

Anyway I checked out Brendan’s birthday,Friday Jan 26 1973. The following day my late pal Cass and me went through to Airdrie, where we suffered a 2-1 defeat. Somebody will remember the wee guy who starred for Airdrie that day.

From there straight into town in a good mood as 8 in a row was on the cards anyway. Few pints in the Howf, Chinese, then up Tiffany’s. Probably whole day for a under a tenner, third of my wages.

Btw,remember my über-hun mate,Lee? He texted everyone his latest new number-this was about four years ago.

The number ended in 1888. Had a two-year contract too. He wasn’t too happy that a certain pal of his pointed it out to everyone bar him-then sent him a Zadok the Priest ringtone courtesy of ACGR.

    It was always thus.

No wonder the fans can get confused though :-)

It’s the same stories we’ve been hearing for years or new conclaves with little substance, backup or even evidence of truth in future events/timescales. They are bound to get something right every now and again though. Any nets up at the Hundome yet?

Barry takes his time to engage his one brain cell, actually missed the first sentence because I was laughing however he reveals in the second one that they need to finish second and perhaps the board can invest in the summer. You have to smile they are in parallel universe where every day is the 12th of July and they are loaded :-)

Actionable if there is nothing in it I suppose. His pal the Menchs comments are likely more actionable than his.

Still. At the end of the day there were failings by the parents of the young kids that should have been actionable.

But that’s my last word on it as I know it is a touchy subject.

  17. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

I hope Tom comes back even better than he was prior to his original ankle injury in the Dundee game .

When Adam Matthews broke his collar bone against Motherwell, their left back Hammil pushed Adam first , putting him off balance and the ferocity of that wee runt Lasley’s tackle brought Adam down.

The push by Hammil was blatant , the linesman had a clear view of it and should have flagged for a penalty. Lasley being the wee runt that he is , made sure Adam got hit .

Two of the worst fouls I have seen on our payers were by Craig Moore on Henrik in the 2 1 game at Ibrox in 2001 then that Bougherra clown putting his studs down Gary Hooper’s achilles in the so called shame game.

We got a shy after Moore’s assault on Henrik. bougherra got a yellow for his attack on Gary.

    Some things will never change

  18. bougherra got a yellow for his attack on Gary…..

…and then went on to commit another 7? fouls

Very good article from James Forrest.

As I alluded to last night. Questions should be asked off a judge who favoured the interests of a fly by night individual over those of state.

  20. Dallas.

    I hope you are well.

Melly sent me some reports on L.C. all good at present.

Sunderland are recruiting for a new coach at his level. I think the current guy was promoted, not sure, anyway he’s moved on. Always a niggle for any player, at any age, when a new coach arrives.

Posting from sunny St. Lucia CSC.

Just back from a few dives with Steve’s Scuba.

Got on the boat only to see the captain in an old hoops jersey. Big smile when he saw my Celtic hat. Turns out he and a few of the crew are tims! Being French speakers, they all love beg Dembele! So gave them him my hat. He was thrilled. . So when they dropped me off at my hotel, I said wait 5 minutes. Ran and got them my new hoops jersey, and gave it to the other lad. He was over the moon!

What a lovely country and lovely people.

If you ever find yourself in St. Lucia, and want to try diving, look up steves scuba … a good Tim shop!!

I suspect Duff and Phelp’s strategy was to obfuscate, contaminate evidence, block progress, continue scamming and use all round legal concealment to protect hun assets as much as possible, but more importantly to make sure that Murray Mints is untouchable until the day he dies.

Cowiebhoy… everything you said about st Lucia is bang on… what a lovely place. Really looking forward to the Friday night fish fry!
