The football FX business, hounding a manager, Road to Lisbon

486

On Tuesday we covered the financial benefit Celtic experienced after Brexit due to the fall in the value of the pound against the euro – the currency Champions League payments are denominated in. Today Manchester United revealed a different aspect to the same economic calamity.

Much of Manchester United’s debt is denominated in US dollars. As a consequence of Brexit, the pound also collapsed against the dollar; this alone added an astonishing £88m to the club’s debt figure.

I see Newco fans are busying themselves debating who should replace Warburton as their next manager. Fans do this, it’s a Pavlovian response to unfulfilled expectations. Many feel it’s a right and appropriate discourse, but watching from the outside you can see how destructive it is.

When fans emotionally move on from a manager it is difficult to back his team when it needs it most. Should Morton [Celtic development FC] have the temerity to open the scoring at Ibrox this weekend all of this managerial window-shopping will fuel exactly what the home team don’t need.

There are few things we can learn from that lot, mostly ‘what not to do’ related items like this.

The Road to Lisbon May 2017 Cycle

The Road to Lisbon

I am genuinely in awe of the fans who will cycle from Celtic Park to Estadio Nacional, Lisbon, in May to raise money for your Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in Crossfire. It is an incredible personal undertaking by each of them, which will bring aid and comfort to many in need.

The project is being driven by one of our own, Mouldy67 – who is a role model to us all. This is from his MyDonate page:

My name is Paul Muldoon, I am delighted to be part of a group of 28 Celts, who plan to cycle from Celtic Park to Lisbon. Each of our group will be funding the cost of the professional support company, accommodation, food and travel by themselves.

We aim to raise thousands of pounds to support three charities close to our hearts; The Celtic Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in crossfire.

The plan is to depart Celtic Park on Thursday May 11, 2017 and will include 13 cycling days, spread over 14 days. We hope to arrive in Lisbon on May 25, 2017.

This project moves a level beyond mere respect, please do what you can to support here.

It’s true, the hoops crop up everywhere. I remember Jill Dando on the holiday programme years ago. She climbed up through an ancient monastery to a hidden cloister somewhere in what was once Babylon, with a knackered camera crew. When they reached what looked like a cave you’d only expect to see bats, they shone tne the lights and there was a lone Tim proudly wearing the hoops.

What a good tale and a bit of light relief

I dont criticise very often or post much during the week unless the Hoops are playing.

Even if the Hoops were playing yesterday, the tone on here would have kept me well away.

    Roll on the weekend.

Already on this and have had discussions with Mouldy 67 on this ( a wee while back and again at the last game) and potentially also looking at a Walk With Shay badge or a Brendan Rodgers badge to compliment this as well, These could then be (with Paul67s approval, the 5th edition CQN badges. The only problem for both Mouldy67, AndyF and myself is time, as we are pretty full on with existing projects with the respective causes.

However, if I could find a couple of kind CQNers to administer this and sell the badges for us, we could make some money for both great causes.

Dessybhoy, I’ve tried to block out Lafferty’s disgraceful lunge on Andreas Hinkel.

Another honest mistake in the season of some of the worst honest mistakes.

Lafferty’s six studs in the upper thigh of Zeng Zhi (spelling) was another shocker from him.

I received a really nice e-mail today from the manager of the Estadio Nacional with an attached picture of said manager with the remaining Lisbon Lions and the European Cup.

I was picking my son up from school. His school team were just back from playing Inverurie High in schools under 18 cup. They won 8 nil and he scored so he’s chuffed with himself.

Delighted to hear Lee is doing well at Sunderland. His dad was telling me Lee had scored 9 goals in the 13 youth league games he has played so far this season. He managed to get to our game against Hearts the other week,

Interesting to note that according to Wikipedia, this year’s Champions League final has been played at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff and Leicester City beat Arsenal 5-2 in the final!!

Even more remarkable is the fact that the same site tells us that the 2017/2018 final took place in Kiev and that Dinamo Zagreb defeated Leipzig by two goals to nil!

I am off to visit Paddy Power pronto!!

Havenet seen much SMSM coverage on this unless I’m missing something. Now if it was us….Anyway interesting to note that they used the phrase ‘honest mistakes’.

“Everyone involved in football understands that, at times, clubs will be on the end of honest mistakes or incorrect calls, it is part and parcel of the game. In addition, it is also acknowledged and accepted that match officials do not set the laws of the game, only enforce them.”

I have previously posted of my visit to Estadio Naçional las July, when myself, Mrs H and a younger student couple who had just rolled up to the stadium ad hoc, like ourselves, were treated very civilly, and invited in past security and told to take our time and get as many photos as we wanted. I suspect the chap who showed us in may have been the stadium manager. He certainly held some position of authority, as the security guard was subservient to him. The security guard was grinning at us and saying “ahh Celtic, Celtic” as he allowed us in.

I was impressed and gratified by the staff. Made a good day great. I am sure your meeting will go well.
