The football FX business, hounding a manager, Road to Lisbon

486

On Tuesday we covered the financial benefit Celtic experienced after Brexit due to the fall in the value of the pound against the euro – the currency Champions League payments are denominated in. Today Manchester United revealed a different aspect to the same economic calamity.

Much of Manchester United’s debt is denominated in US dollars. As a consequence of Brexit, the pound also collapsed against the dollar; this alone added an astonishing £88m to the club’s debt figure.

I see Newco fans are busying themselves debating who should replace Warburton as their next manager. Fans do this, it’s a Pavlovian response to unfulfilled expectations. Many feel it’s a right and appropriate discourse, but watching from the outside you can see how destructive it is.

When fans emotionally move on from a manager it is difficult to back his team when it needs it most. Should Morton [Celtic development FC] have the temerity to open the scoring at Ibrox this weekend all of this managerial window-shopping will fuel exactly what the home team don’t need.

There are few things we can learn from that lot, mostly ‘what not to do’ related items like this.

The Road to Lisbon May 2017 Cycle

The Road to Lisbon

I am genuinely in awe of the fans who will cycle from Celtic Park to Estadio Nacional, Lisbon, in May to raise money for your Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in Crossfire. It is an incredible personal undertaking by each of them, which will bring aid and comfort to many in need.

The project is being driven by one of our own, Mouldy67 – who is a role model to us all. This is from his MyDonate page:

My name is Paul Muldoon, I am delighted to be part of a group of 28 Celts, who plan to cycle from Celtic Park to Lisbon. Each of our group will be funding the cost of the professional support company, accommodation, food and travel by themselves.

We aim to raise thousands of pounds to support three charities close to our hearts; The Celtic Foundation, Solving Kids Cancer and Children in crossfire.

The plan is to depart Celtic Park on Thursday May 11, 2017 and will include 13 cycling days, spread over 14 days. We hope to arrive in Lisbon on May 25, 2017.

This project moves a level beyond mere respect, please do what you can to support here.

I spent most of today catching up with the last three days of contributions by posters. Some annoyingly childish squabbles were made worse, IMO, by the gaps left by the moderators’ deletions. In the past I found it quite easy to scroll past “spats” between posters. I would find out about the original points of disagreement, decide if they interested me (or not). If they didn’t I just scrolled past the remaining tit for tat posts.

I think this is preferable to being perplexed by many posts making no sense, as the posts that may have shed dome light on the subject, have been deleted. It is like reading a redacted secret document, tantalising but ultimately unreadable and annoying.

I assume I am not the only one who tends to read a day or twos comments in a oner. I understand the need for “mad orators”, but feel it lessens the quality of the blog. Just a shame that the repeat offenders failure to take heed of earlier instructions to cease the ad hominem attacks has resulted in this unsatisfactory development.

Already on this and have had discussions with Mouldy 67 on this ( a wee while back and again at the last game) and potentially also looking at a Walk With Shay badge or a Brendan Rodgers badge to compliment this as well, These could then be (with Paul67s approval, the 5th edition CQN badges. The only problem for both Mouldy67, AndyF and myself is time, as we are pretty full on with existing projects with the respective causes.

However, if I could find a couple of kind CQNers to administer this and sell the badges for us, we could make some money for both great causes.

Bad news about Tom Rogic, oldest bhoy will be distraught.

Talking about the re make if Roits as some are I’ve just watched Free State Of Jones . Matthew MC Conaghey . Based on true story along similar lines as Roots , not a bad watch,

    ======================================================================

    Sorry to disillusion.

The ” true story ” claim about ” Roots ” was debunked years ago.

” Haley and his work have been excluded from the Norton Anthology of African-American Literature, despite his status as the United States’ best-selling African-American author. Harvard University professor Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., one of the anthology’s general editors, has denied that the controversies surrounding Haley’s works are the reason for this exclusion. In 1998 Dr. Gates acknowledged the doubts surrounding Haley’s claims about Roots, saying, “Most of us feel it’s highly unlikely that Alex actually found the village whence his ancestors sprang. Roots is a work of the imagination rather than strict historical scholarship.”[26] “

    Must be tiring for you…

  20. Just left a private dinner tonight in the Victoria&Albert Museum. (Baroness ) Karen Brady entertained us diners with her career and views on life however the host – a Dublin man- mentioned that when an Irishman came to the UK he could

only support one of 3 teams- Arsenal, Liverpool or Man United.

That is the reality as seen through the Dublin prism, but it still grated to hear it.

Karen Brady stated that West Ham was now the fastest growing global football brand.

Really frustrating that Celtic are patronised in English football circles. When the football universe changes a lot of people will be in for a shock.
