The goalkeeper’s league

222

I was speaking to a friend who supports Newco about their recent decline.  His reckons the goalkeeper situation has a lot to do with it.  Allan McGregor was a big part of their success last season, now 40, time has caught up.  His shot stopping ability has stopped, speed of foot movement has slowed and, as we saw at Celtic Park, he does not command his six yard box.

As a consequence of all of this, confidence of those in front of him evaporated.  They play well when on the counter, but pushing up field is dangerous.

We’ve been there.  Last season we had the year of three keepers, none of whom convinced the manager to give them an extended run.  Not only was our defence unconvinced by the man behind them, they did not know who they were training to play in front of a few days out.

So much went wrong in 2020 it would be harsh to overstate any one element, so don’t misunderstand.  But the antics of Fraser Forster, who watched his pal, Craig Gordon, reject an offer to play backup to him at Celtic, to accept a deal on half the money at Hearts, before changing his tune and returning to Southampton is troublesome.

When we watched Joe Hart make that early save on Sunday, we are reminded of the importance of the last line.  Without Joe, we would be second favourites for the title right now.

  4. Best wishes to Scott Brown – leaving at this precise moment is probably a case of Jim Goodwin saying “this town ain’t big enough for the both of us”, and doing so before any ‘sparks’ start flying! I wouldn’t at all be surprised to find Broonie as Hibs manager next season.

Broonie has been out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury.

    Bada.

You are correct that he had been out with a hamstring injury.

He returned and played against Hearts on Wed eve, Jim Goodwin didn’t select him on Sat, although he was available.

    He was ” a surprise absentee ” .

I too was surprised that Jack Ross didn’t get the job, he seemed the obvious candidate to me.Time will tell with Jim Goodwin, however in fairness he’s done reasonably well at Alloa & St Mirren & I think was due a chance at a higher level. I fancy him as ROI manager in the medium-term, if he ‘makes a fist of it’ at Aberdeen.

  15. I hope Scitt Brown finds a coaching or managerial job soon. Preferably not alongside Neil Lennon, as I don’t think he would are much there.

  16. Smithsonian African Art Museum Expected to Send Benin Bronzes Back to Nigeria

In a potentially landmark move, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. is reportedly in talks related to a plan to send back dozens of Benin Bronzes that it owns, according to the Washington Post. An agreement has not yet been signed for the repatriation, but, citing the head of Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments, a plan for the return could be expected to be signed next month.

The Benin Bronzes are a group of objects that were looted in 1897 by British troops from the Kingdom of Benin, in what is now Nigeria. Those pieces made their way to England and have since been dispersed across the world, ending up in some of the world’s biggest institutions, most notably the British Museum in London. In the past year, following a decision by Germany to begin repatriating its Benin Bronzes, various institutions have followed suit.

In recent years, the National Museum of African Art has been working to shift the way it presents the Benin Bronzes that it owns. In a panel discussion held last year, Christine Kreamer, the museum’s deputy director, said that the museum no longer used certain terminology—for example, the phrase “punitive expedition” to describe the British troops’ purpose in coming to the Kingdom of Benin—in its wall text to characterize the violent means by which the Benin Bronzes were taken.

I think all countries that had empires (ie just about every European country with a coastline) engaged in this sort of conduct, did they not?

There again you have other countries like the USA, Australia etc that decimated or extirpated their native peoples and their cultures.

  20. itscalledthemalvinas on

Mmm . . . . Interesting, maybe he will be joining in the game next season.

  21. Big WAVY earlier,

That’s some clear out but I notice there was no mention of Christopher Jullien.

According to Ange he is “fit and ready for selection.”. If that is the case it is not injury keeping him from gaining valuable minutes on the park.

Do you see a place for him next season or do we have to contemplate a replacement?

As for James Mccarthy, Barkas , Ajeti we will take a massive financial hit if they even agree to move. I would imagine most clubs will be looking at cost cutting.

As for supporters, I think lack of disposable income will hit football hard in the short to medium term.
