The goalkeeper’s league

222

I was speaking to a friend who supports Newco about their recent decline.  His reckons the goalkeeper situation has a lot to do with it.  Allan McGregor was a big part of their success last season, now 40, time has caught up.  His shot stopping ability has stopped, speed of foot movement has slowed and, as we saw at Celtic Park, he does not command his six yard box.

As a consequence of all of this, confidence of those in front of him evaporated.  They play well when on the counter, but pushing up field is dangerous.

We’ve been there.  Last season we had the year of three keepers, none of whom convinced the manager to give them an extended run.  Not only was our defence unconvinced by the man behind them, they did not know who they were training to play in front of a few days out.

So much went wrong in 2020 it would be harsh to overstate any one element, so don’t misunderstand.  But the antics of Fraser Forster, who watched his pal, Craig Gordon, reject an offer to play backup to him at Celtic, to accept a deal on half the money at Hearts, before changing his tune and returning to Southampton is troublesome.

When we watched Joe Hart make that early save on Sunday, we are reminded of the importance of the last line.  Without Joe, we would be second favourites for the title right now.

I don’t think Jim Goodwin is into sentimental appointments, or old pals acts.

Jim, is an ethics based, grounded sort it seems, he was the only football person in Scotland who stood up for his clubs supporters, citing that medical passports to be demanded of football fans to enter the stadium to see their team, is an unacceptable over reach, and a breach of supporters privacy, good on the Goodwin, a man with a backbone and ethics, no wonder he looked look like the odd one out in Scotland, everybody else, bullied, cowed, and sitting at the back of the bus, and those who didn’t buy the bull were smeared as dangerous monsters?? just shows exactly what type of country we really would be given half the chance.

Ridiculous red card for Sanchez in Liverpool game, 90 seconds after Inter scores. Plays the ball and his momentum carries him into Liverpool player.

A symbol of war, invasion and conquest?

    The Union Jack

The name ‘Union’ first appeared in 1625. There are various theories as to how it got its name. The most plausible one is that when a small flag was mounted on the front of a warship (and a selected number of other ships), it was called ‘the Jack’.

  10. Ever a red card for Sanchez ,why didn’t VAR look at that ,or does that come into play with offside and goals scored.

Liverpool hit the bar, and Salah hits each post with 2 separate shots. Some game.

Mmmm he was on a yellow, for a similar dunt in first half.pity tho for inter and as a neutral always prefer 11v11.

Bayern 7-1 up against full strength Austrian Champions. Gulp! We could be in a Group with them if we win the league. Some reinforcement necessary at season end, methinks.

    AN TEARMANN

Didn’t deserve the second yellow, IMHO. After hitting the ball his foot travelled about 12 in. at speed, and there was nothing he could do to change the speed, direction, trajectory or foot orientation. If you played fitba, you’ve been there. There was no malice intended.

  15. IniquitousIV on

Italian booked for high boot that was lower than opponent’s knee. Poor refereeing in this game from top Spanish ref.

Could be 4 Clubs from Englandshire in CL quarters. Maybe Atletico Madrid can change that.

The Austrians were excellent in the first leg.

I have a sneaky feeling they might push Bayern all the way.

    Should be a cracker.

Thats football,Sanchez wouldn’t have malice at all, professional yes, that why I think he will know the impact of that tackle.did feel sorry for him and inter for it to happen then,so quick after scoring.he is experienced pro tho on a yellow.

Interestingly all those measurement you say could possibly be measured by VAR in the future, but we would need to make rules first

Thanks for that further clarification. As Celtic previously said, we’ll dictate how many huns are allowed in. In this case zero, nada👍

  22. I don’t think Sanchez can really argue against his second yellow card tonight. Whilst there may have been no malice, it was a reckless challenge.

After connecting with the ball, his momentum carried him forward toward an opponent, in a motion in which he had lost control.

    Was this motion unavoidable?

Yes. He could have stayed on his feet.

He chose to lunge for the ball. Yes, he made a connection with the ball, but he couldn’t prevent himself from colliding with an opponent in the follow through. He thereby had no control over his actions, including the danger he could impose on an opponent.

Unintentional, it may be. Reckless, it was.

    IMO :-)

Could it be that he may be classed, by Ange, in the same bracket as Barkas, Ajeti, McCarthy.
