The goalkeeper’s league

222

I was speaking to a friend who supports Newco about their recent decline.  His reckons the goalkeeper situation has a lot to do with it.  Allan McGregor was a big part of their success last season, now 40, time has caught up.  His shot stopping ability has stopped, speed of foot movement has slowed and, as we saw at Celtic Park, he does not command his six yard box.

As a consequence of all of this, confidence of those in front of him evaporated.  They play well when on the counter, but pushing up field is dangerous.

We’ve been there.  Last season we had the year of three keepers, none of whom convinced the manager to give them an extended run.  Not only was our defence unconvinced by the man behind them, they did not know who they were training to play in front of a few days out.

So much went wrong in 2020 it would be harsh to overstate any one element, so don’t misunderstand.  But the antics of Fraser Forster, who watched his pal, Craig Gordon, reject an offer to play backup to him at Celtic, to accept a deal on half the money at Hearts, before changing his tune and returning to Southampton is troublesome.

When we watched Joe Hart make that early save on Sunday, we are reminded of the importance of the last line.  Without Joe, we would be second favourites for the title right now.

Not sure what Scotland leaving the UK would do to change any of that.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Shrink it a bit further?

    ###

    How do you shrink history?

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sorry, if you had bothered to watch the video, it showed how the British Empire rose and then shrank. But I agree with you, no matter how much it shrinks, its horrific legacy lives on.

  3. Should all posts on CQN be about Celtic ( or even CQN itself)?

Politics would maybe be OK in an educational sort of way but that is not usually how debates are conducted. Slagging usually becomes the modus aperandi for at least one side.

What about personal matters? Good news;bad news atc. Is that OK on CQN?

Should I even mention that I am going to cycle / play golf?

Och, I could ramble on for ever and not reach a conclusion :-))

  4. Inquisitiv from yesterday…

I like Julien. The version we last saw before he got crocked. A threat at corners and a very decent defender. I suspect Ange wants a settled CCV & Starfelt combo and until such time as an injury or suspension forces that issue we’ll have to wait. I’d expect Julien to step in and play to our system.

He’s therefore a keeper for me but who knows what long term injury has done on his ability and mojo for that matter.

p.s would still love to see a left footed CH next season who looks more confortable on that side. Think that’s been an issue for Starfelt who has got on with it and got better over time.

anything goes in my view. If CQN was a Celtic pub, all subjects would come up. The abuse and aggressive swearing probably wouldn’t as often

PS do you cycle to the golf with the bag on your back? 😎

  6. No idea where these sanitized Celtic Pubs are with little swearing in them .Never been in one,and been in a great many.

  7. Seems our government thinks its easy just to nip across to visit the Embassy in Paris, when as a refugee mother with a suitcase and a couple of kids, you are sitting in Calais, after three days travelling by bus from Ukraine, traumatised, and afraid, to try and get a Visa to enter the UK.

In the meantime a hall has been set up to enable you to get a Cuppa and a Kit Kat.The thought of putting immigration workers in the hall to process these desperate people, not occurred to them.

Meanwhile the EU has taken in 2 million, without visas, actually understanding what the word,”Emergency” means.

    Good old Brexit.

But that’s not a valid argument for Scotland withdrawing from a centuries long political and economic union.

Not when you consider that Scotland was a willing and active participant in building the Empire, and profited from it to a greater extent than England did. If there is a residual guilt it will belong just as much to an independent Scotland as to a Scotland that remains as part of the UK.

It’s also bizarre, and insulting, to argue that Scotland, because of what was done during the Empire, should withdraw from a union with a country in which 15% of the population are descended from Commonwealth immigrants and in which the number of people entitled to an Irish passport (ie those who have at least one Irish grandparent) exceeds the entire population of Scotland.

  9. Canamalar,

You know fek all about the Donbas conflict.Stop quoting it in your pro Communist \ Putin posts.

  10. If CQN was a pub, the people who continually post the same viewpoint ad nausea would be sitting at their own table in bore’s corner happily and futilely arguing with each other.

Just you keep gobbling out your ignorant buffoonery.

The more drivel you spout the less I need to get involved.

On GMTV ,a Ukrainian guy with a British passport, goes back home, picks up his family, drives for a week to get to Calais, refused entry to the UK, got to drive to Brussels to apply for Visas for his family……..what is wrong with these fkn idiots, that we can’t help these people?

  14. Seen Bernard Ponsonby watching numerous Celtic games.

Incidentally if some of us replicated what we say in the boozer we would be joining Big Jimmy on the sin bin.

    Free big Jimmy.

  15. BB,

    Watched that.

The public desperately want to help these poor people. Unfortunately generally we have a very poor standard of home office appointments.

Incompetent , out of touch and clueless. ( This was some of the comments from Tory backbenchers )

  16. !!Bada Bing!! on

750 Visas ffs, what an embarrassment, the Republic have taken 2,000,no questions asked, said that they can sort the paperwork later, why not use the SEC and other huge arenas they used for Covid, built them in a couple of days….

  17. What is the Starz on

There were plenty of idiots who thought Hitler was right also….Before they realised he wasnt.

  18. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Bada…,

Its the same as the covid its got nothing to do with helping people, Britain stands on the side lines squealing about proactive action then sit back and collect the loot without any real commitment.

They say they are helping by sending lethal aid while civilians are left to provide the humanitarian aid, what they leave out is that the lethal aid is not a donation, payment in full is expected. So regardless of the outcome the civilians are left to pay the price for everything in every aspect. While the elite parasites keep stirring up the hatred. Its how its always been.

Even if the Ukraine was to win (whatever that would look like) they will be paying off military debts for decades.

Meanwhile the manufactured hate will continue to blind people to what is really going on, blame game is always the best way to create division. This place demonstrates that perfectly.

  19. What is the Starz on

    Bada

Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe with a population of little over 2 million has taken in tens of thousands of refugees ..

Or should that read…have given shelter to tens of thousands of evil Nazis who were paid by Nato to commit genocide against the peace loving Russian people

  20. The UK are famous for loving bureaucracy ; which is one of the ironies of the Brexit result

A good way to manufacture hate is to invade countries and bomb and shoot and kill civilians

Its been done in Ireland Palestine Lebanon Iraq Syria Afghanistan and numerous other places and the perpetrators have always been roundly condemned by all right thinking people

highest rate of refugees per capita in Moldova. My daughter’s pal says her gran in Moldova can hear the gunfire

Pretty sure Jordan, Turkey etc took most of the Syrian outflow and very few ended up in Europe

With any war the first thing that goes out the window is truth. There is such a lack of moral leadership in the world, why would you believe anything that politicians say? The UK government is a fine example of that. Lie after lie after lie. Boris Johnson, Priti Patel etc…

“People hope that if they scream loudly enough about “values” then others will mistake them for serious, sensitive souls who have higher and nobler perceptions than ordinary people. Otherwise, why would they be screaming? Moral bitterness is a basic technique for endowing the idiot with dignity.”

    ~ Marshall McLuhan said that.

    Don’t be fooled!
