The Great Leap between SPFL and Inter Milan

859

Making the great leap between playing Scottish Premiership teams and the likes of Inter Milan will always be a challenge for Celtic.  We have done so many times in recent years, Milan were held home and away in the Champions League knock-out stage, Barcelona were beaten, but whenever we have carried the game to opponents of this stature, instead of reverting to our own style of catnenaccio, we’ve lost heavily.  Quicker, more skilful, players, could make us look statuesque by comparison.

This is not a criticism.  If the only way you can compete with a team with ten times your resources is to defend your 18 yard line, you should do so.

Things could have gone either way on Thursday.  We were defensively inept during the opening minutes as Inter found space goal-side of their markers.  I don’t know if Ronny had a moment of self-doubt at that point, perhaps he did, but was simply unable to unwind the attacking instincts of his players, but Celtic are all the better for the way they picked themselves off the floor.

I’m sure the odds on Inter progressing will be short, but I’m also sure Ronny Deila will know his players can win in Milan.

I arrived home late last night to read that Tony Conway, son of our own RWE, lost his battle against Motor Neurone Disease/ALS.  I met Tony, with dad John and brother Martin, three years ago.  Tony was still fit enough to walk, but evidence of the pain the family shared was evident.  The three of them travelled back from their US home two years ago, along with mum Pauline, to see Celtic, and meet some family.

They bought hospitality tickets and minutes before kick-off, Celtic’s Iain Jamieson nabbed Tony and asked if he was able to make the halftime draw.  Tony knew this would be the last time he would see Celtic, so his journey up the tunnel and onto the park was, to put it mildly, a very special Celtic Park moment.

The improvements are obvious but the suicidal defensive tactics remain.

I’ve said for months, a high pressing game is a style it’s not tactics.

I absolutely loved Thursday night by the way :-)

A top guy of the highest order. Shhh, (Pedro’s a top tim as well). Ye’ve got to love the both of them, BRILLIANT. My een is starting to shut. (To our outside Scotland supporters, “een” is an old Scottish word for eyes). Lol. Cot.

  3. Turning point seems to have been the Hols in Canaries, since then we won 7 on trot scoring 16 and conceding 1, prior of course to Thursday’s game. This has included 2 Cup wins which were hugely important to us. Ross County 27th Dec seems a long time ago now.

Don’t go on, enjoy your night and remember on Monday morning by the time you get your play-piece ready you have done more good work than all the impostors like Keevins & co could ever hope to do !

The context of Mon not learning quickly is regarding the three at the back in Europe.

A few weeks after that amazing game we were eliminated from Europe playing 3 at the back home and away.

  7. Anyways my last contribution for the night, Weefrathe for his cot, mise for my leaba. Good Night & God Bless All. Tonight is the best I’ve felt in over 2 weeks, so maybe my Med problems are easing. A good win tomorrow and I’ll be flying. UTLR

  8. HT, Let the People Sing.

    But not about politics.

    Not about Ireland.

Not about standing up to Racism.

Not about standing up to Facism.

    Don’t even mention sectarianism.

But apart from that, Let the People Sing.

    But don’t dislay flags.

Brilliant post – nail on the head.

Re goals conceded the other night – two were individual errors and the other a clearance that went wrong – just bad luck.

Can’t pin that on the tactics.

Yep that pretty much sums it up. We’re so intent on being ‘inoffensive’ that we’ve fed the ‘Old Firm’ scribes whilst forgetting our roots.

We now have Celtic supporters who’re ashamed to express the ideals of our roots for fear of being seen as ‘offensive’.

if someone could post a link to the last 30 mins of SSB, you really need to hear it to believe it.

Bada bing, posted “delahunt finally grows a pair”

So I thought I’ll have a wee listen.

1st thing I hear is a Hun doing a wee bit of whataboutery talking about us singing the soldiers song……

I laugh thinking, they’ll put this plonker in his place, by explaining this is the Irish national anthem and we have a strong Irish heritage….

    Nope….

    We change the words.

    It’s sectarian.

    We are a catholic club.

Where condemnation should have been 100% against them, it is turned 180 degrees on us, because a caller comes on with a point about a national anthem….

    Fecking disgusting.

That prick Keevins should be hauled over the coals.

Being angry doesn’t even cover it.

  15. Geordie Munro,

I often think MoN’s contribution is underestimated hence my sticking up for him.

When he took over, we were a complete and utter mess.

We had a disruptions like dressing room, no young talent emerging , and the other team in Glasgow were the top dogs – they knew it and we knew it.

Martin gave us back our pride

The subsequent defeat at Ibrokes was the norm, as was the humping in Europe.

The 6:2 game wasn’t just a retaliatory blow, it was us on the offensive , and whilst the team that WGS inherited required surgery, we should rememeber Martin left us as cup winners , and within 40 minutes of winning the league.

  16. eddiegreenhillsbhoy, Just saw your post after I had said my goodnights. I must admit that as a Republican in Cork, I spent my adolescent life and a lot of my adult life hating Collins.

In recent years I like to think I have a more balanced view and that neither side had a monopoly of right over wrong. Still the saddest part of our history, the father of a great mate of mine who is a Celt and has travelled with me to Celtic Park was in the ambush party that fateful day.

    Whoa there neebs.

Mon is a legend. Proper legend.

I’m merely stating that the post earlier about Mon learning early about formations in Europe was bunkum.

Still wouldn’t change a thing though.

The goals were entirely down to individual errors, the type that could happen on any sporting occasion.

I’m talking about the times when I looked up and saw VVD and Denayer left alone with 2 and sometimes 3 Inter attackers whilst Izzy and Adam were pushing forward.

Against top class opposition I think it’s suicidal.

Ronny has made massive steps forward but I think he must learn how to adapt.

Tactics. MON played 352 because most teams played 442. 3 defenders on 2 strikers. 2 markers and an extra man to cover.

Football has changed. Now most teams play with 1 striker. So ronny plays with 2 defenders on 1 striker. 1 marker? and the extra man to cover.

The high pressing game is employed to minimise opposition time and space in transition. To turn 1 striker into 3 or 4.

As Ronny says it’s gutsy. It’s difficult. It requires players to be on their toes at all times. But imagine for a moment if the crazy norwegian actually makes it work?

Wasn’t having a go at you, and apologies if it came across that way.

I could greet every time I see Celtic supporters, especially on here, vilifying our support for relative misdemeanors whilst racism and sectarianism goes unchecked continuously.

  28. Its not even as simple as that eddie, it was a shocking time, brother against brother, father against son. I was brought up on stories like the massacre at Ballyseedy, I was born 25 years after that massacre, its now 92 years ago. To this day I still seethe in anger for what the Free Staters did that day. Anyhow it doesn’t do my old heart any good to be thinking like that, so we will just let it go.

  30. Unless VVD starts performing in Europe, i don’t think he will be such a big loss if he goes.

Now that the midfield and forwards are beginning to click, he doesn’t have that much to do domestically. Earlier in the season he was a bit ropey!
