The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

MurdochauldandHay. That could be another good signing he has lots of experience at a high level and will push Craig Gordon for a first team place.H.H.

Like a lot of yourselves, I’m getting nervous about the CL.

Last year was the worst since the sieve. Has Ronny learned how to win against capable sides?

Even if we don’t qualify, I’d keep Ronny.

  3. I think we are looking at players in the right positions. A striker, a goalie and a LB is exactly what we need.

Though I am not convinced about the quality of the strikers, I am open minded.

  4. But are we only relying on luck to get us into the CL g/s?

How the mighty have fallen (over the years)

  5. I would definitely go with the Rookie goalie. Makes sense to save cash, promote youth and learn from experience.

Looks like the ole scouting budget has been increased since Gordon Strachan’s day. We only used to pay mileage for the M8 trip to watch the Hibs – but it looks like the travel allowance has been upped to cover the M90.

How can anyone say we are downsizing?

    Ciftci….poor signing imo

Cant see us making CL this year.

If that’s the height of our ambition….forget it.

    No point.

Something for nothing/bonus culture at CP…..stupidity.

Refurb the stadium, highlight the Celtic Legends….but sign dross.

Maybe they should have shelved the refurb…..and bought a decent striker who would have got us to the CL.

    The priorities are all wrong.

Yeah its great having a lovely stadium….pity about the bargain basement signing.

    CL…..The board aren’t interested.

Poor Utd. Lost 5 best players in last 3 windows. Gauld, GMS etc – top young talent

Good Morning CQN, Good Lead Paul. I mind CQN was a great site full of great posters all talking about Celtic past present and future and it would be my first and only stop for all things Celtic first thing in the morning to see what the moon howlers were saying and throughout the day, Of late it is just full of under whelmed people who complain no matter what the club does, Ciftci and Baily are our level now so back them, We can’t compete with england (who are ruining the football world imho) or some other countries so we must live within our means.

Not pro board by any means myself in terms of how they handled the sevco deal , or living wage or even the new sponsors but Celtic are still my club and I still support what they do. We have enough snipers without joining them.

Looking forward to the new season and my knickers will also remain untwisted with the signing of Ciftci. Another bad egg? No I think he will do well for us.

At least he’s proven in the SPFL instead of signing non goal scoring strikers.

Mon the Hoops and enjoy your day gents

    Ciftci?

Totally underwhelmed by that as are most of my mates.

He may as well plead guilty at his hearing I a couple of weeks as he will get hammered as a Celtic player for biting, another reason, footballing ability apart I would NOT have signed him.

    —————————————————————————————————–

Cifti will give us an option against teams like ICT, St Johnstone, Hamilton, Ross County, Kilmarnock and all the others whose game plan is always ‘get in there faces’ – we can go more direct as the ball with ‘stick’ with Cifti, allowing our talented midfield to ‘pick-up’

There is no need for a new left-back – Charlie will do for me!

Cifti WILL be good value – we need good value after a half dozen strikers with NO value.

  14. You have to say that at 23, he is puntable material if he does okay in the shop window that celtic is.

The Green Man. I think you will find the board are very interested in the CL what they are not interested in is bankrupting the club for a competition we cannot win. You have to give Ronny and the new signings a chance writing them off before the season has started doesnt make sense the players we are signing apart from the goal keeper are all young players who can be improved and that is what Ronny wants. So lets see how things go before we give the board stick.H.H.

Wonder how Jim McLean would fare now? Probably fine considering he was a genius. Knocked back the huns also.

McLean would never have sanctioned selling to a scottish club, unless it was outrageous (£4.5 million for Duncan Ferguson, 22 years ago- (the equivalent of united getting £30 million for him now) press vilified him for not selling to the huns for a million)

  20. Can’t quite understand the issues some people have with signing NC.

Not the finished article but has promise and talent to work on.

Was it only 6 months ago that we had the chorus of GMS / SA weren’t good enough?

Well look how that turned out — GMS is our new talisman and SA has offered a vision we have not had in 5 years.

We moan at the SMSM for its anti SPL viewpoint and continual griping.

And then we do the same ourselves in spades — doesn’t. Make sense to me.

A well coached, enthusiastic, energetic and confident team can go far on “little” talent.

A team full of highly paid names on the slide will get us nowhere.

Then there is the issue of exotic projects with well known agents.

Look how well that stratagem turned out.

It has taken 9 years but I think PL might have learned his lesson.

How much money has been wasted?

Jeezo, the negativity on here is astonishing ! Ronny to go if we don’t make CL group stages, Boyata is a dud after a pre season friendly, Ciftci not good enough but we should have brought Samaras back ! Is this the same Samaras who was booed onto the park in one of his last games for us ? Now the board aren’t interested in making the CL, I don’t know where some of you guys sit at Celtic Park (if you attend at all) but I hope it isn’t anywhere near me…

Nothing like giving the manager a bit of time to bring his own players in and see how it goes.

Welcome to Celtic Nadir & Logan, I’m sure you’ll turn all the doubters around…

  22. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

I posted last night that I think that our coaching staff could do a Dixie Deans job on Ciftci.

The modern game does not rely on a 20+ goals a season player.

The onus of scoring is spread between any number of players.

We have Griffiths, GMS, Armstrong, Forrest and Johansen, who are all capable of scoring.

Add VvG and the rare Brown goal, then you see the dependency of one man is negated.

What we need is a man up top who can receive the ball and link with his midfield.

    Ciftci does that.

Come on here to get away from silly Scottish media and Sevco are going to be in Champions league in 3 years.

And get a headline about “The great United reunion”.

No offense but the last time United were great was in the 80’s with wee McLean doing an excellent job in Scotland and Europe.
