The great United reunion, signing backup keepers

1109

Ronny Deila’s dream of reconstructing the Dundee United team of 2014 is on track as United have agreed terms for the sale of striker Nadir Ciftci, who is set to join Stuart Armstrong and Gary MacKay-Steven in green and white hoops.

United are feeling sore at losing three players to a rival but it could be argued this deal is a positive result for them.  They are no different than Celtic in needing to acquire good players who will enhance their team and generate transfer fees when they leave.

Armstrong and Mackay-Steven gave Celtic a timely boost when they arrived in the team in February.  If Ciftci adapts as quickly he’ll do well.

Signing a backup goalkeeper is a tricky call.  Do you blow a large slice of budget on a genuine contender for the goalkeeper’s jersey, or perhaps promote the next teenage David Marshall?  Both are viable calls.  If we sign Logan Bailly (29) for a fee from Belgian club Leuven the expectation at Lennoxtown is that he will push Craig Gordon.

That would leave us with competition across the field, apart from the left back slot…..

The problem with the “debate” is that it is the same unconstructive, generic dross at the same point every season no matter the different circumstances the club finds itself in no matter what the improvements have been no matter the faith, hope and positivity many feel. Being negative 24/7 in the vein hope you are right once every ten years isn’t any way to live and I’m afraid without constructive input that’s how it comes across to many.

We are not a nailed on CL team. We are a pot 4 team when we get that wee bit of luck to get through the qualifiers. We play in a small country with a pathetic TV deal but get to play in the CL group stages now and then, hell sometimes we even qualify from them too. My question is this what do we expect as a support realistically??

I’ve seen pish Celtic teams, we went for years never seeing European football after Christmas, so let’s not let our ambition get in the way of our capabilities. We are where we are for a reason. Money.

We are doing a damn sight better than most in similar circumstances.

Jfh totally agree mate! Hopefully ciftci is ronnys choice and not john parks, his striking options have been nothing short of a disgrace …..

I think you’re bang on. I’ve just been catching up and I can’t believe some of the posts questioning the Celtic credentials of others simply because they’d have preferred us to sign someone better than Ciftci.

The guy will get my support but I’m not convinced he’s the answer. For some on here that’ll mean I’m no really a Tim. It’s pathetic.

  5. Ciftci could be a great acquisition in my opinion. He gives us an option we don’t have at present and I think he is a faster player than some on here suggest. If he signs let’s lose the negativity and give him a great Celtic welcome.

Deluding ourselves if we think we are a CL club. Europa League is our level now. The financial climate the club is operating in has seen to that. Our almost fanatical insistence of selling our best players at the first sign of a profit is soul destroying.

All under the guise of ‘Do you want to go the way of Sevco’ We have spent £3 million so far in transfers, on 4 players this summer. Received £2 million from the sale of Adam Matthews. A net spend of £1 million on players. If that is what our board consider an adequate investment to gain entry into the Champions League they are simply insulting every one of us.

    ……………………………

Is that our spending finished then?

Do you know something we don’t?

The accounts are difficult to fathom but the last ones had us around £4m to the good wi the bank,an increase of around £100k on previous.

Since this was from an operating profit of c£11m,I respectfully suggest that the money is going somewhere but not,it seems,on the pitch.

Operating profit of £11m should give us a similar amount to spend on the squad. It hasn’t. So can you tell me where it has gone?

  11. The renewal of season tickets is in progress, could anyone say if Club Celtic tickets will be renewed at the same time.

  12. Like all Celtic players Ciftci will get my full backing.

He deserves all our support as he will be wearing the hoops.

However , where will he play?

Is RD changing his style, of playing 1 striker?

I think I’d rather have Leigh.

What’s poor is I was looking for an upgrade on Leigh.

Don’t think Ciftci is that man?

I agree re. CIFTI. I believe he has a lot to offer, 2 good feet, good control, pace and holds up the ball well and scores goals. Add aggression and I believe you have got a player and with good coaching and discipline that will develop into an excellent player.

Would that it were so,mate. My thoughts are that £11m disappeared from our club without explanation.

The profits are shouted from the rooftops, hailed as proof of the efficacy of the board. And the club benefited to the tune of £100k and a depleted squad?

Your nadir is behind you and if we make the Group stages we will likely meet your Zenit(h) since they are the Russian champs and automatic Group Stage qualifiers.

Just getting ready for all those kinds of headlines….

    Questions:

Has RD has recruited Nadir Ciftci so that he can wrestle with the media on his Monday presser over his weekend exploits on and off the pitch or do we think that RD has made it clear to NC that he requires a focused pro playing for Celtic?

Do we think that has RD explained his plan for NC to him, in the same way that he did with Dedryck Boyata and Saidy Janko?

Will NC do a job for us?

    Will he score goals?

Will he prove a challenge to CL defenders?

Will he fit in with our style of play?

Will he disrupt the dressing room?

Will he travel every day to Lennoxtown with Zig and Zag (and Dedryck)?

    Will he drink in Tennents?

Will he get called up into the Turkish squad?

    Will he understand Scott Brown?

    Will Scott Brown understand him?

    All valid questions.

Gerryfaethebrig, I agree with you. RD has done enough to merit our trust on these signing decisions.
