The Guidetti enigma

1242

I was asked to contribute a piece on John Guidetti to a German magazine last month.  John was on his way to winning the European U21 Championships with Sweden, while being every inch the football personality.  The German publisher wanted to know why Celtic, Stoke and Manchester City had decided against re-employing a striker with a flattering pedigree.

During last season it looked like John was destined for the English lower leagues, or perhaps one of the resting homes in Turkey, but a few weeks at a tournament later he’s won himself a five year deal with Celta de Vigo.

Guidetti is a better player than he looked at Celtic last season.  We don’t play a system which lends itself to a classic, British style, penalty box striker, which is what John is, but would you give him a five year contract to play in La Liga?  Of course not.  You’ve watched the player way more than Celta’s scouts and you know better than they do.

This is the truism in scouting, people who watch a player week-in, week-out, know vastly more than a scout who only gets to see a month’s games, or a handful of games across the season, or worse, a selection of DVDs provided by the agent, or TV highlights.

What’s made John Guidetti is his outlier season, 2011-12, when on loan at Feyenoord he smacked home an astonishing 20 goals in 23 games.  Without that season, the Celta scouts wouldn’t even know his name.  Maybe the serious illness he subsequently suffered robbed him of his mojo, maybe he’s a pound or two heavier than his fighting weight, but my money’s on Vigo suffering buyers regret soon enough.

The best of luck to John in Galicia, but I suspect he’ll be available for loan this time next year.

  1. Hard to tell what will happen to Guidetti.

If he puts his head down and allows his natural talent to flourish he will shine.

When he lets his ego dictate play then he will make life more difficult.

We saw the best and worst of him.

Always felt that once the goals dried up he beat himself up and his form declined.

He had a lot of excuses for his diminishing form but refused to look at his own part in that.

Good player with potential to be great.

He himself will determine the outcome.

Total agreement regarding John Guidetti lacks quality, and pace. He’s got a shrewd agent to match his ego.

‘After being beaten by effectively an u-17 Spurs side it’s unlikely that the London side will be sending any players on loan to Ibrox to boost their development.

    Good luck to Guidetti

I always think you should discount penalties and set pieces when assessing a striker’s record.

Of course you have to have the skill and courage to take them, but unless your free kicks are of the Nakamura standard, then there is normally two or three other guys in the team who can also take the pens or free kicks.

When we assess Guidetti’s return from open play at Celtic it is actually very poor ( 6 or 7 ?) , and I also recall him missing a few.

I’ve not looked at the stats, but, a five year deal for a guy who is now 23, and who has only scored around a dozen goals in the last two seasons is a nice piece of work from his agent.

  14. hankray…

Yep, when you look at the build of Djokovic, Serena would leather him, off court that is.

I mind there was rumours flying about Nadal and Spanish footballers using drug enhancements, some Spanish judge supposedly ordered their samples to be destroyed. mmm

Her response to the ad ? -” it would be like agreeing to a blind date “.

    Time for a dip .

  16. John Guidetti was at Man City for 7 years but in the last five years has been on loan to five different clubs, including Burnley, Feyonoord, Stoke City and Celtic. In the middle of this time (July 2011) his agent who is also his father got him egregiously and needlessly involved in a serious double contract situation involving Man City and FC Twente.

His agent (still his father) has now got him another five year deal.

Speculation about these similarities and his time at Celtic is fair.

John’s habit is to arrive with a bang and then fade away – just as he did at Celtic.

In a full season at Celtic under a new manager, where LG rose to prominence, where AS faded from favour and where Scepovic couldn’t get a full game – JG flattered to deceive and failed to show the manager AND the fans that he wanted to stay.

JG’s LC final attitude was very poor and he lost me at that point. More to the point, this behaviour was never going to impress a manager like RD. He was finished. Enter Nadir Ciftci.

JG’s record shows that his ego exceeds the opinion of every manager he has worked under. He sulks when he doesn’t get the game time he thinks he deserves. Someone should be advising him better, but maybe when you mix family and business things don’t work out that well. In an individual sport like golf and tennis (Woods and Williams) it might work, but in a team sport you need to sacrifice some of yourself to help the team: that apparent dissonance always seems to derail John. Until he gets better advice the same thing is bound to happen again.

He was a wondrous thing to see in his first few months at Celtic though.

Has Amido Balde actually left our club.

There was a bit in a newspaper and on here a few weeks ago suggesting he is off to Metz, but he isnt on their website ?

Also, looked at our team last night, and assuming McGeough, Irvine and Boerrighter are all in the departure lounge ( maybe wishful thinking with Boerrighter’s wages) but, our squad is actually very thin.

Aside from the 14/15 who played last night, we have Forrest , Commons and very few other senior players.

If we do add to the squad I hope it is first team ready players, otherwise lets give Henderson & O’Connell a chance, and no more ‘hit n miss’ projects
