The Guidetti enigma

1242

I was asked to contribute a piece on John Guidetti to a German magazine last month.  John was on his way to winning the European U21 Championships with Sweden, while being every inch the football personality.  The German publisher wanted to know why Celtic, Stoke and Manchester City had decided against re-employing a striker with a flattering pedigree.

During last season it looked like John was destined for the English lower leagues, or perhaps one of the resting homes in Turkey, but a few weeks at a tournament later he’s won himself a five year deal with Celta de Vigo.

Guidetti is a better player than he looked at Celtic last season.  We don’t play a system which lends itself to a classic, British style, penalty box striker, which is what John is, but would you give him a five year contract to play in La Liga?  Of course not.  You’ve watched the player way more than Celta’s scouts and you know better than they do.

This is the truism in scouting, people who watch a player week-in, week-out, know vastly more than a scout who only gets to see a month’s games, or a handful of games across the season, or worse, a selection of DVDs provided by the agent, or TV highlights.

What’s made John Guidetti is his outlier season, 2011-12, when on loan at Feyenoord he smacked home an astonishing 20 goals in 23 games.  Without that season, the Celta scouts wouldn’t even know his name.  Maybe the serious illness he subsequently suffered robbed him of his mojo, maybe he’s a pound or two heavier than his fighting weight, but my money’s on Vigo suffering buyers regret soon enough.

The best of luck to John in Galicia, but I suspect he’ll be available for loan this time next year.

Yeah sociedad were typically spanish (if there is such a thing)… technically they were sound. I said to my old man, they were a tidy and efficient team, but seemed to lack a danger man, No.9… didnt strike me has having an obvious threat up top.

Either way, that first 30 minutes is what you would wish us to be playing against every week. because it is that level that helps you get quicker, get tighter to your opponent. etc.

You learn more against good sides, good players… unfortunately Ross County, Thistle, Killie and the likes, dont stretch us enough… and i definately think it takes our players 45mins or so, to adjust to the superior play of european teams.

and when i say european teams, i dont mean icelandic teams… i mean what we would come up against in champs league or even europa league group stages.

Bourne, if you are looking in now or later on, sorry I never replied to your post around midnight last night.

My ‘exhausting’ trip to and from Paisley caught up with me and I fell asleep.

I hope you are enjoying your holiday.

My son and I were quite happy with our performance last night against a team who are wee bit behind us in the pre-season preparation.

Broonie riled a few of them especially ex Real Madrid and Queens Park Rangers player, Granero: Sociedad’s number 8.

Their number 27’s build and running style reminded me of Pierre Littbartski ex of Cologne & Germany. Fortunately he wasn’t as good.

There was good link up play between our three former Tannadice residents. Maybe as others have mentioned on here, Ciftci’s understanding with Gary & Stuart might have been one of the reasons he was signed.

In my opinion John Guidetti took too many touches of the ball in an opponents penalty box.

    Bobby Murdoch, thanks.

The guy who sits beside me was getting as frustrated as I was with John Guidetti not releasing the ball or shooting quickly enough.

My son and i started paying more attention to John when he got the ball in the box and he was sometimes taking three or four touches when two tops would have done.

He did assist in a number of our goals but from February I was thinking he is not staying.

I don’t have football qualifications but like most here we have been watching football for more than forty years and you can see after a few months if a forward is a natural goalscorer or not.

Good comment about Bobby Murdoch’s dad wanting him born no later than 11.59pm on 11/7. He may have been pacing about more at the thought of a 12/7 child.

I still find it funny that uber-sticky bun, Donald Findlay, was born on St Patrick’s day.

  10. Bobby,

just great fun with a bunch of old hippy types most of them rolling in it but soooo right on! Eh, i’m not trying to introduce a political debate but by goodness, heard some amount of crazy off the wall bull down there, from what i would regard as very intelligent people spouting the Daily Mail verbatim, quite frightening really

    You provide anecdotal evidence.

    The reality:

This hasn`t stopped thousands of Sri Lankans….Tamils……risking their lives in failed attempts to come to Australia in the 20 or so months Tony Abbott has been P.M.

He was elected on a promise to stop the boats.Logical, then to blame the Australian electorate rather than the man they chose.

Stop the boats…..stop the drownings……stop the people smugglers.

Former hoop, Darren O’Dea has joined an Indian club, Mumbai. Their manager is Nicolas Anelka.

Darren will be there to December then will be looking for another club in January.

He’s been all over the place over the last three years, Ukraine, Canada and now India.

I hope for his and his family’s sake, he gets fixed up permanently with a club in January.

We had a wee gab about betting the other Saturday, I nearly knocked it off today, had a 30p Yankee on ties in the Scottish Open (all 8/1) with a wee £3.50 accie, first game Kuchar and Fowler beat by one shot, the other 3, finch/mcevoy, Lowry/rose & mcdowell/Cabrera bello all stoated, a few bob back for a £6.50 outlay but crazy money for one shot with Kuchar/Fowler, although at least it was the first match that was down….. Live to get another day
