The harmful urge to sign players early

307

How many of us rolled eyes at the news this week that Issouf Bayo was off to play for Watford, a Premier League team last season, and Oliver Burke would ply his trade in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen?  Both are forwards, both 25, both fleeting unsuccessful stints at Celtic, now they have won a ticket for wages at a high paying club.

There is a great truism in football, the fans who watch a player week-in, week-out will provide a more telling insight than YouTube clips, stats or scouting reports.  Good luck to both of them but I expect neither to succeed.

The problem with Watford and Werder is that they both want a striker in early and do not have the patience to hang around until nearer the end of the window, when talent that is actually in demand will become available.

Looking in from the outside, we can both see the rashness.  What benefit is there in recruiting guys who were so easily handled by SPFL defenders?  Watford fans will see Bayo who banged in 11 goals in a six-month loan stint a Charleroi, whereas Werder fans will wonder at how they picked up a striker on a free transfer who has twice been sold for in excess of £13m.

Having qualified for the Champions League group stage, there is, by contrast, a calm over events at Celtic.  Two of last season’s successful loanees are now on permanent deals, Dundee United’s free keeper was signed and we paid a tidy sum for what, by any measure, is an ambitious move into the South American youth market.

There are more spaces in the squad available: a third striker option and midfield cover.  Let’s not be like Watford and Werden Bremen.

Show me the disgust at Kansas City. Understanding the pressures and emotions that forced Washington to change and will eventually force Kansas to , at least, rename their stadium, is not disgust or cancelling- it’s just friendly advice. Do you still get riled when using the term Ms. or are you recognising that this faux argument blew over quickly.

You are not good at interpreting the motivation for mild disagreement. You did it yesterday with St. Stivs when you said he must be a friend of the Board because he disagreed with you, and you did it with others when you suggested that the (lesser valued) jobs you imagined (never very accurately) they had predetermined their reason for disagreeing with you.

It’s a pretty childish approach to debate- try dealing with the points instead

  2. Without wading too far into the cancel culture debate the biggest problem is probably the behavior of fans who follow these teams. Atlanta fans indulge in the tomahawk chop ( usually augmented with foam tomahawks handed out free by the club ) and fans can often be seen fancy dressing as native Americans. The Kansas owner send a young woman out on a horse called warpaint before each game while he bangs a native american drum!! and as for Clevelands mascot chief Wahoo.. I think as SFTB says, move off quietly and just give it up.

I may indulge in a few choice bourbons tonight along with USA brewed ales. And sing along to Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner.

  4. SFTB,

Wow, great replies. I will need to read it carefully to see what parts I can agree with.

Certainly overturning Roe v Wade without any concessions seems like an attack on the female population. I tend to stay clear of the heartbreaking subject of abortion. I am pro life, but agree with a woman’s right to choose.

What happened the last time there was no taxation without representation in that country. It seems to me that woman are not being represented.

Again, what a multiple reply. Thanks.

the mental gymnastics that fella puts himself through in a single shift in here is mind boggling, in the one day I was accused of being a friend of the board (cos I dont beleive there is any real business rationale for an indoor pitch), or indeed a board member, or Willie Haughey himself (cos I spent 2 minutes looking up the status of QPFC Ltd).

P67 chided up recently that the Moderator has a hard time keeping up with posters who have personaility disorders. I am kinda like Professor Divine, I dont really like people advising others what to do unless they really are qualified to explain, a bit like the o;d days on here when CRC could tell us about the accounts, BRTH about Law, AuldHeid about Business, etc etc etc.

This fellas lack on knowledge on any given subject, is just baffling, I wouldnt sit next to him on a supporters bus thats for sure.

anyways, back to the real world stuff, the stairs need brushed down.

And still no signings this week. Storm the Bastille! Nice bourbon this. I’m saving Knobs Creek and Wild Turkey for some of the balloons who post on here. 😂👍

And I don’t mean old Turkeybhoy before he goes into raging mode. 😂

    Wherefore art thou Romeo.

I don’t think Wherefore exactly translates as Why but I agree it’s not used properly in the Wherefore the Scrofulous Hill Billies today quote.

Hence the phrase the Whys and the Wherefores.

i dont like to butt in on other folks chat..

    but…😁

im sure the original phrase on here that the poster used to post (i cant remember who it was) said ‘whither’ and not ‘wherefore’

    that may help the discussion!

Apple 6.11, Buffalo Trace and Ten High. Makers Mark for a nightcap. How is your 4th July in Kentucky?

I will give you another chance to explain your viewpoint.

You have highlighted the troubles / conflicts in US sport due to the use of inappropriate — namely indigenous — imagery and naming conventions.

My question relates to a similar situation in SA specifically Bloemfontein where a name is used by a group that have no historical or cultural links to it — should they mow return it and rename themselves on the basis of the arguments that you use for the US examples?

    .

  11. Stx2 @ yesterday.

You answered a question on some matter relating to the club with a certainty and authority that could only rightly come from either an officer of the club or a gadgie that was a drinking buddy of said officer of the club — so what is it?

In crowd central or punter bumping / mumping his gums?

  12. Lets All do the Huddle, Butt in away that is the purpose of the Blog, old farts like me with time on my hands just commenting coz there is no football.

Now that you say it, I think you are correct the original phrase was Whither,

Iniquitous quoted it as Wherefore, Tom McLoughlin called time on the Wherefore bit and I called time on Tom’s offering.

As I said earlier a pile of nonsense from bored old Farts,

If Neil Oliver is where Ernie learned about the Declaration of Arbroath, I would advise don’t go near the retired archaeologist to learn anything about history. Unless you, Ernie, would like to explain why you questioned how effective the D.O.A was for its intended purpose?

Ernie, lecturing anyone about history? rofl. Any chance of behaving like an adult on the blog Ernie?

Your go-to is “cult member” all the time. Is that because you don’t have anything but cheap, immature, boring and childish arguments to back up your point of view?

£130 return on football bet. I may stay out late. Full steam ahead and damn the Torpedoes!

I fear that when it comes to your advocacy of democratic socialism you spend more time looking for the failures than you do looking for the many successes — and expend all of your energies apologising for the former rather than explaining and expanding the latter.

Strange but all too prevalent at the moment as some sort of socialist cringe has affected too many who once were stalwarts on the journey to the New Jerusalem.

No matter the struggle continues as the alternative is already too terrible to behold.

Bognorbhoy, great album from a great musician. Wondered who would make the connection. 😂👍

  17. Just went on the Club’s ticket site.

2 seats together ? Certainly sir… top tier, row z or BB. We can just squeeze you in.

This for a friendly against a 2nd division engerland team in the middle of the Glasgow Fair. Same for Norwich match.

Did someone mention ticket exchange yesterday?

  18. The 2 big lhads we had up front needed 2 things to shine with us , very good first touch and ability to link up,

Both the big guys needed space to run into and couldn’t cope with all the intricate passing nonsense in front of them , hence both looked pretty poor .

Bit like Harold who needed room to run into

Under the current mgt there is little chance of square peg in round hole transfer policy , so for example our big bloke up front is a one touch shoot merchant

OB vs AngeBall = match made in heaven.

OB is fast / direct / strong — huge plus for us at the moment.

With the touch that can be variable in the extreme.

Consequently worth a punt if had been available.

We owe him after inflicting NL’s tactics / coaching on him.

And while we are at it we should be apologising to TW.

    …….

The real issue is that OB struggles to trap a ball and waits for the ball rather than moves and turns , completely unsuited to our current style of play in my view , but hey good luck to the guy

It’s some time since I made any reference to the Declaration of Arbroath, (which was only a linguistic point, namely that it was written in Medieval Latin, and that any translation that includes the word ‘nation’ would have to be understood in that context, which I think is what a historian would say) but my comment has obviously been causing you sleepless nights.

    Have you tried Ovaltine?
