The harmful urge to sign players early

307

How many of us rolled eyes at the news this week that Issouf Bayo was off to play for Watford, a Premier League team last season, and Oliver Burke would ply his trade in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen?  Both are forwards, both 25, both fleeting unsuccessful stints at Celtic, now they have won a ticket for wages at a high paying club.

There is a great truism in football, the fans who watch a player week-in, week-out will provide a more telling insight than YouTube clips, stats or scouting reports.  Good luck to both of them but I expect neither to succeed.

The problem with Watford and Werder is that they both want a striker in early and do not have the patience to hang around until nearer the end of the window, when talent that is actually in demand will become available.

Looking in from the outside, we can both see the rashness.  What benefit is there in recruiting guys who were so easily handled by SPFL defenders?  Watford fans will see Bayo who banged in 11 goals in a six-month loan stint a Charleroi, whereas Werder fans will wonder at how they picked up a striker on a free transfer who has twice been sold for in excess of £13m.

Having qualified for the Champions League group stage, there is, by contrast, a calm over events at Celtic.  Two of last season’s successful loanees are now on permanent deals, Dundee United’s free keeper was signed and we paid a tidy sum for what, by any measure, is an ambitious move into the South American youth market.

There are more spaces in the squad available: a third striker option and midfield cover.  Let’s not be like Watford and Werden Bremen.

  2. Barry Coffey has exited Celtic and signed for Irish outfit Cork City following two successful loan periods.

The 21-year-old midfielder moved to the Hoops in 2017 and was a key figure in the club’s youth set up.

Despite being involved in first-team training on a number of occasions, Coffey never made a senior appearance for Celtic.

He now rejoins Cork, who are currently managed by former Parkhead and Sunderland player Colin Healy.

Speaking on his move back home, Coffey told the Irish Examiner: “I am delighted to be back.

“My question relates to a similar situation in SA specifically Bloemfontein where a name is used by a group that have no historical or cultural links to it — should they mow return it and rename themselves on the basis of the arguments that you use for the US examples?”

    ———————————

I don’t see anywhere near the same comparison. Nobody in S. Africa exterminated the Celtic race. Bloemfontein appeared to have adopted a name from another league, like Cape Town Spurs (formerly Ajax Cape Town), Arsenal de Sarandi in Argentine league, or even the New York Rangers. Plenty of Irish men went to Boston so Boston Celtics are not due to face any charges of cultural appropriation. I’m fairly sure some Irishmen passed through Bloemfontein during the Boer War but, in any case, Celtic does not belong to Ireland and Scotland- most of Western Europe and parts of Turkey can lay claim to the term Celt.

It really does not fit the comparison you seek.

Ernie, funny how you never stated the Declaration of Arbroath was not effective for the purpose it was intended because it was written in medieval latin. Should it have been written in Sanskrit? It wasn’t that long ago you made your comment. Could you explain to us what the purpose of the Declaration of Arbroath was?

    ——————————————

I really don’t and you continue to make assertions that are unevidenced by any supporting examples. These habits of trying to work out the perverse motivation that people must have for disagreeing with you, the lesser jobs they must have that account for their (to you) false reasoning, or the accusations you “imagine” or “fear” (see above) to account for their differing views all indicate a tendency to ad hominem which invariably ends in insult.

Many people, including those who support some of your positions have told you that your Chronic Abbreviation Tendency makes understanding of your points difficult. You have shown little response to this constant feedback and few efforts to make your communication more readable and understandable. I don’t say it will make your arguments more correct but it will make it more obvious where any strengths or weaknesses are in your reasoning.

Socratic method wouldn’t work with you Ernie. When you resort to insults you demonstrate that you can’t win the argument. The other thing you do is deflect, as you have done tonight with me. Can we take that you don’t know what the Declaration of Arbroath was for, much less explain why it wasnt effective for the purposes intended because it was written in latin? The Navajo have a proverb: “You can’t wake up a man who is pretending to be asleep.” Would this proverb be appropriate for you Ernie?

Oh well at least you answered.

And the question was yours to answer rather than jumping in elsewhere as if you had a better understanding of the issue than the two people having the conversation.

Late to the party — you most certainly don’t — so wind you neck in that particular topic.

However onwards and upwards with the issue at hand — 7.37 aka a small Boeing — the use of indigenous / native American / Bering strait American imagery and language by US sporting teams.

Given the longevity and influence of the indigenous population on the non Arctic landmass of North America I find it strange that an accommodation can’t be found to keep its use given that they still exist / haven’t gone away and they part continue to play in US affairs.

If that is off the table then what else in time will be off the table?

To remove it in totality — the Commanders change was a long time coming given its specific derogatory nature — to remove all mentions of indigenous life from the popular fabric of the US would be another victory to those that in the past wanted to remove them from life period regarding the future of the growing country.

What comes next — place names or is sport different and different rules should be applied?

The issue for the US and its understanding of its earliest residents is that they have been all too easily kept of the front page of popular consciousness by elements in the establishment that would prefer that they do not exist at all and their memory can be expunged from popular debate.

I know very little about Kansas City and what its historical roots are but removing the Chiefs from the name of their NFL team will do nothing to improve the lot of indigenous Americans in general or in the Mid West in particular.

If the visuals on show are stereotypes then the answer is not to remove them / forget about them — the answer is to understand the true detailed story / educate the US on who it is and where it came from / find suitable new words and imagery.

Going down the road of taking away appropriated imagery and language will end up with Bloemfontein losing part of its history and that is not what I would want — you might not want it either but that is where a reactionary part of society will take us using a logic that your viewpoint has not thought through in its totality.

You will open the door and they will run through it.
