The Hooiveld – Samaras point

718

Our best wishes to Jos Hooiveld, 28, who has managed to resurrect his career at Southampton 23 months after completing an unsuccessful move to Celtic.  Southampton, newly promoted to the English Championship this season, sit top of the division, with Jos a key part of their success.

The big defender clearly has more than he was able to demonstrate during his time here, despite Celtic clearly being in need of a strong central defender.  Last night, after Georgios Samaras was send forward to lead the line, it occurred to my just how unsuitable he is as part of a front two.  All that gutsy energy, running and yes – bravery – both in terms of diving into challenges and always being available for a team mate, no matter what feedback he is receiving from the stands, is hidden when he’s up front.

Give him space to gallop into on the wing or let him find his own Southampton.

Too right. I know a fella who inadvertently stepped into one of them on his way out of the ground after the St Mirren game at the weekend and now has a double leg fracture to show for his trouble.

And on the subject of Sammi’s hair…. yet again you hit the nail firmly on the head. *Flicks hair casually to the side* “Because he’s worth it!”

problem is they will not be allowed to develope as a team the board will see to that, any decent offer will be taken for all of them.

  7. Would love to have seen Hooiveld given a chance. As for Samaras, I think of the World Cup game he played last year in SA as lone striker, he was immense, just a pity he can’t do it consistently for Celtic.

    Sense returning to CQN…

More discussion about Celtic.. Less said about Huns the better… Also spot on Paul, acknowledging the obvious Sammi is a very good footballer.. A reminder of better times when the team was packed with quality rather than loans and freebies…

  15. Honestly don’t think Jos Hooiveld was given much of an opportunity here. He could have developed into a solid confident centre half. I seem to remember both Paul Elliot and Alan Stubbs had terrible first seasons but grew into great players for the Hoops.

Sammi will always be an enigma I fear. Love watching him in full flow.

Remember his first season when he cut through the Murderwell defence like a knife thru butter or how he tore Killie apart at Rugby Park running almost the whole length of the field to score a wonder goal.

I could never bring myself to shout at him and always feel the anger that is showered down on him from the stands is counter productive.

If Neil has managed to found Sammi’s Mojo and can keep it fine tuned then we are in for a treat for the rest of the season.

  16. Steinreignedsupreme on

Hooiveld’s most comfortable position at Celtic appears to have been on the treatment table – so it’s tough to judge how good he is. I think his move is best for all parties really.

Sammi got loads of encouragement from the area I was sitting last night, and he was hearing plenty of it. Seems like Fraser Forster is the new scapegoat though.

  17. Always liked Sammi despite him nearly running me over once as he was coming out of a petrol station!

    Never hides.

So glad he’s finally found a position in the team that suits his talents.

    Hope it stays that way.

I read something somewhere that Paul Telfer hated football..I’ve met a few players that were scunnered with football which is true of many folks views towards work, but I seem to recall Telfer saying he HATED it.

Similar to Sndre Aggassi in his biography who has had a deep hatred of tennis from a very early age…

Does the Telfer story Ring any bells with anyone?

That doesn’t tally with the facts.

I seem to remember him coming off injured on a few occasions or being unavailable for selection after games he managed to complete.

When he was fit he was often selected. Trouble is he was regularly injured.

Sunil Chhetri disappointed with Rangers trial (No Not their Tax Trial)..

Sunil Chhetri admits he is disappointed with how his trial with Rangers went but is grateful for the opportunity to have trained with the club.

The Indian striker has spent the week training at Murray Park alongside international team-mate Jeje Lalpekhlua, having arrived in Glasgow last Friday

Both players had little time to impress, with Rangers’ first team training restricted this week by a SPL fixture with Kilmarnock on Sunday and then a visit to play Hamburg in a friendly on Tuesday night.

“On the first day we came here, they were preparing for a match the day after, so we couldn’t train,” Chhetri told STV.

“The second day was the match, then the third day they had to rest after the match.

“On the fourth day they left for Hamburg and we couldn’t go. It was a bit disappointing the way it went. But as I said, this was the only week we had.

“I’m just disappointed I didn’t get much time with the first team. Even the gaffer didn’t get much time to see us.

“Having said that, this is the only week we had a break in our league. This was the only chance I had to come and have a trial.”

Chhetri and Lalpekhlua are now on their way back to India without a decision having been taken on whether either has done enough to win a permanent deal.

“On the whole it was a good experience,” Chhetri added. “It’s an honour to come to Rangers on trial. I had a chat with the manager but not about the trial. It was just a friendly chat.

“I am sure Kenny [Moyes] and Yogesh [Joshee], my agent, will talk to him and then we will see what happens next.

“We have to rush back as we have international duty from the 3rd. I think Kenny and Yogesh are going to get feedback, then we will talk to them and see what happens

“As far as Jeje and I are concerned, if given a chance we would love to come back again. In the summer hopefully. It depends on what Mr McCoist says to our agents.

“It is a huge club with a huge history. It is a big name to be attached with and, given the chance, we would love to be a part of it.”
