The Hooiveld – Samaras point

718

Our best wishes to Jos Hooiveld, 28, who has managed to resurrect his career at Southampton 23 months after completing an unsuccessful move to Celtic.  Southampton, newly promoted to the English Championship this season, sit top of the division, with Jos a key part of their success.

The big defender clearly has more than he was able to demonstrate during his time here, despite Celtic clearly being in need of a strong central defender.  Last night, after Georgios Samaras was send forward to lead the line, it occurred to my just how unsuitable he is as part of a front two.  All that gutsy energy, running and yes – bravery – both in terms of diving into challenges and always being available for a team mate, no matter what feedback he is receiving from the stands, is hidden when he’s up front.

Give him space to gallop into on the wing or let him find his own Southampton.

    Yep !

For a professional footballer on his money, he should be doing a LOAD more. He’s wooden, got no swagger. Just a journeyman. Because he wears a Celtic strip ( presently ) doesn’t make him any better than that. In fact, most of the present lot aren’t fit to wear the strip.

Big Sammi, nail on the head from you my friend.

I’ve said many times on here that Sammi should be played wide left and /or midfield. The big guy does not hide, does not shirk and tracks back and yes, he can score as well. The 10 million dollar man, he’s our modern day Steve Austin. BUT, he’s a confidence man who relishes priase and dwells on criticism.

So a message to our fans, give the guy encouragement and he’ll deliver.

Hooiveld may or may not turn out to be a decent defender, but he never showed that at Celtic. Samaras, on the other hand, has always been class. More and more Celtic fans are coming round to that, thankfully.

As most of you will know I am one of the older posters on CQN and things have certainly changed since I started following Celtic. It used to be when we signed a new player he was given a year to settle in before we judged him but now if a player has not hit top form in a matter of weeks hes considered a dud by many of our supporters,Hooieveld is a player who shows that it is often the wrong way to judge a player we need to have more patience with new signings.H.H.

    Q. I am in central London, Buckingham Palace Rd to be precise, the night of the Udinese game. Any London Tims point me to the best pub to watch the game that night. I would prefer not to travel too far as I have an early appointment in SE1 the next morning.

I will also say this ,the LL /MSM never miss a chance to stick the knives into our back line ,whilst lauding the virtues of the govan defenders at every turn .

Well I have watched the highlights of the solid govan backline in their last 3 games and their 2 CBs are due some scrutiny .

  23. Sammi was head and shoulders (oh, yes) above the rest of his teammates last night – a performance to equal his display against St Mirren on Saturday. He is Celtic’s talisman.

I was against the inclusion of Ki, preferring to stick with the same XI, but Wanyama struggled, whereas Ki and Kayal made excellent contributions in very different ways, Ki sending in somne excellent deliveries (the two corners in the first half spring to mind), winning fouls, nice touches, while Kayal looked every inch the battler of last season.

Hooper found himself thrown into a very different game than he’s been used to, but he did what was asked of him and his goal was well taken and should have stood. Could have come deeper sometimes. I may prefer Zaluska to Forster, but I thought the big man played well (the goal was one of those things, Kayal inadvertently doing an attacker’s job to unsight him).

Stokes was rightly taken off in the second half – he looked spent. In the first, he played the lone striker role better than he’s ever done. Ledley looked to be continuing his good form until his injury, but Charlie, although not a favourite of mine, gave an honest, measured performance as his replacement.

Forrest was excellent in the first half, but was marked out of the game in the 2nd, and his frustration boiled over into a couple of silly challenges. In both games versus Atletico, he has shown that he has some way to go before he’s top premiership quality. Brown came on and did … not much, although his blocked shot was one of those ‘what if?’ moments.

Where we were let down was at the back, with silly errors nearly costing us more goals and certainly not adding to the flow of Celtic’s great front play. Wanyama’s timing was out, while Dan’s pace and lack of passing ability were cruelly exposed. Matthews continued what for me has been a poor run of games by his early standard, and Loovens shortened lives, having one of his occasional existential crises about the meaning of football (‘If I let this go out for a corner, what really will change in my life?).

MOTM: Samaras (by a considerable distance)

  24. So who was Dalglish and Clarke looking at last night? With Lucas out for season Kayal/Ki may be on the radar for a January bid, do we sell?
