The instant football changed

326

Had your fill of international football for the year? Good. Let’s get on with business. Delighted Mark McGhee’s back in football, and at Motherwell. I had a soft spot for Mark back in the days, ‘Hammer of the Hearts’, as he was.

By watching Mark McGhee you saw a profound change take place in the game. Until the mid-80s it was possible to get by in the game aligning brute strength with decent levels of skill, as Mark had, or even sublime skill with compulsive inertia, which was enough for Charlie Nicholas to carve out a career for a while.

Almost in an instant the game changed. Mark was praised (and valued) with the most unflattering chant, Nicholas was finished after the debacle of Raith Rovers. Not that he’s bitter.

Best of luck to big Mixu too. I’m long on record saying we don’t need a ‘strong Rangers’ (sic.), but the flip side of this is that we do need teams like Aberdeen and United meeting the grade.

Murray Capital Group posted a £13.6m pre-tax profit. I’ve been writing about this wolf in wolf’s clothing for long enough to know the script with this matter.

I know many CQN’ers have helped Glasgow the Caring City over the years. You should take a look at the work they carried out with Syrian and Afghan refugees in Serbia this month. If you are on Facebook, give them a like here.  It helps the volunteers to know their efforts are appreciated.

Then maybe ask older Celtic fans what they know about Novi Sad, it’s a story worth telling, even 48 years on.

I don’t agree with you re NA2, at least he is constant, has been for years, and he will argue his point, TD on the other hand will not debate anything.

Guys who are board lovers are imo the cause of the bickering on here, years ago posters got on and never the name calling, it’s the clappers in the main who started the divide.

Now you may well disagree, and many will, but I give not a jot, as it’s my opinion, and if I held yours, I wouldn’t hold mine :-)

  2. I have been keeping an eye on the CQN visitor figures this week and can assure you that the numbers are very robust. I don’t have the exact figures at hand as I am visiting family in Edinburgh but I know that on Friday over 25,000 people were on CQN and over the next few days over 19,000 people were on the site. This morning around 11am there were around 400 people on the site – more than 70% were reading about the loan signing from Manchester United. That was just a snap shot.

  3. THE_HUDDLE @ 8:56 PM,

Must concur, the lack of trolling has certainly been a noticeable feature of the International break – was there a purge?

Also as Celtic haven’t played, the Doomsayers haven’t been in action. For many a long year the Blog has always been at it’s busiest after a poor display or a defeat, the worse the display, the worse the defeat the busier the Blog.

Of course there are a lot good posters missing but then few posters are prolific or even consistent these days. Most come on from time to time and brighten the place up.

As long as we know what the weather is doing on an EK morning and there are chaps who are prepared to spend their lunchtime on the f5 button and we can Crop & Roll on a Friday night, we know the world is fine.

I was once a very frequent poster….for some 10 years or so. Seldom post at all now. Too many posters now have an agenda. The independence period brought a lot of friction to the blog. There’s still a poster who enjoys ramming the fact that he “voted aye” down people’s throats.

Give it a rest ffs. Then there’s those whose every post is aggressive and violent in nature. It never used to be like this. It’s stopped me posting on a regular basis. Still read daily for news….but any news gets lost in the vitriol. I’m almost giving up the blog altogether. It’s not fun anymore.

No doubts WC – I think the question is why people are not posting so much on the blog. Personally I think there are a variety of reasons. As soon as we lose a game – watch the figures fly through the roof. :-)

    Cheers for the reply.

I do understand that and I know Paul must have laid out a lot of money to provide us with this platform over the years,so it’s more than fair enough to use ads to cover a bit of the costs.

That’s why I never moaned about it till now, but it does seem to be having a real effect on the number of posters.

As for the techie solution, yes. Am coming home this weekend to see my daughter who is light years ahead of me with technogeekery and will hopefully sort me out with adblocker software.

I will not begin to speculate, second guess why Posters have deserted posting. Their decisions whatever their reasons.

Me personally, lurk mostly these days but always look in. Will I ever desert CQN high unlikely.

I will continue to post and contribute if I have a view to express.

If we all give up and do not keep the faith then yes your fear will be realised.

You are CQN, I am CQN, we are all CQN…it’s up to you and me.

Too many friends made to lose touch. Fortunately those who do not post anymore I have got other ways of keeping in touch.

The the thought of no more Hootenays fills me with fear, never mind losing CQN.

The Sevco doomsayers often mention the dilapidated state of the Govan Superbowl. As I have not had cause to visit for some time :-) to witness it with my own eyes, can anybody put any flesh on the bones :-) of these stories? Is the stadium in imminent danger of collapse? ……. Needing three seats replaced?……… Or somewhere in between? Does anybody have any reliable information on this?

I am beginning to weary somewhat of the reports of “well placed sources”. Anyone got the real SP?

THE EXILED TIM – I disagree with your main point and side with HT. It’s tedious, repetitive and usually one or two examples of extreme behaviour are used to denigrate a whole society. OK we get it, that’s that posters opinion but to come on nightly with the same IMHO guff is a turn off.

When Celtic have a good result we usually see a one line post saying well done or something similar then nothing until the next night when the usual hyperbole returns and spoils any feelgood factor from the result.

Think back to Saturday, for those who were there.

I have been keeping an eye on the CQN visitor figures this week and can assure you that the numbers are very robust. WC, I am sure the numbers visiting CQN are healthy and may get healthier still as time goes on.

But numbers posting on the blog are down, most definitely. You don’t need the metrics in front of you to see that.

So people are coming to CQN, reading an article or two, maybe scanning the blog, and beetling off again. But not posting.

Years ago I used to be a regular in Maley’s over on eTims which, while it was not a patch on CQN in terms of traffic and volumes of posts, was still a good wee place to look in to once or twice a night and say hello.

Then the guys at eTims revamped their site, got rid of the Maleys chatroom and went for the straight publishing model – regular articles, opinion pieces, with minimal input from readers.

I have been wondering for a wee while if this is the plan for CQN?

This is not a criticism, not even a veiled one! CQN has given me a lot of pleasure over the years. Free to me, though I suspect not to Paul, so I am in no position to start bellyaching about it changing.

But I would be very careful of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

    all the best and HH.

We have had 3 CQN Annuals and each has carried a Roll of Honour. We have lost significant numbers each year. It’s sad and would be good at least to find out that our old friends are okay.

I am new in here, so can’t really comment on the perceived drop in quality/rise in hostility etc on the blog. What I can say is that people withdrawing their input is a strange way to arrest any decline in standards or quality, if this is the case.
