The international precious commodities

505

The first reaction to the international break is never positive: “How many players do we have away and what condition will we get them back in?” The team which stopped the ten had more representatives at the 1998 World Cup than any other side (a remarkable achievement), but we caught a cold from these exploits the following season.

Leigh Griffiths would no doubt be delighted to start for Scotland this week. Representing your country is one of the things footballers look back on in their later years, so for his own sake, I hope Leigh gets the call, but for Celtic’s I’d be quite happy for him to have a quiet couple of weeks.

Griffiths, Scott Brown and Nir Bitton are precious commodities to Celtic right now, we can’t afford international mishaps for any of them. There’s better cover for the others who will be on international duty, but Stefan Johansen in particular looks like could do with a break.

You’ll know Packie Bonner’s autobiography, The Last Line, launches this month. Packie has a night at Walkabout in Glasgow on 29th October, where the big man will speak about his career, and many other things, past and contemporary. Tickets are available here.

For me, the number of posts is irrelevant. I’m more concerned with the quality of them.

I’ve been reading CQN for close to 14 years now or thereabouts. I remember I used to like the financial site that was very similar to CQN that was linked to on the right hand side of the page. i was wondering if Paul 67 ran that site also?

Anyway, I feel CQN has dipped in the last year or two compared to previously; nothing to do with Paul67.

It has become really personal in abuse, vendettas, childish name calling etc. It was never like that previously and is dragging the blog down when you have to scroll past half the names/posts/vitriol.

Sometimes I think if it wasn’t for bobby murdoch and a few notable others, the comment side of the blog would collapse.

And it has shifted to the right wing IMO. Plenty of toryesque beliefs being posted these days. Probably huns. I don’t like tories- wouldn’t want to drink with one particularly, even if they are celtic fans.

This is a wee bit of topic, but does anybody know how much we made from the Commonwealth Games last year (opening ceremony, etc).

I’m just interested to know if it made much of a difference to our last set of accounts?

I’m sure it’s well documented, but I don’ remember seeing it.

Internationals….not a fan. Was mildly interested until John Kennedy was crocked, after that see them pretty much as a blot on the landscape as it means Celtic are not playing that weekend plus we could get some of our key players injured.

In terms of Euro 2016 – who do we want to see there – Martin’s Republic or Gordon’s Scotland team? For me its a hard call (born in Glasgow btw). Ideally both but thats not going to happen. Cant make my mind up, either or would be fine. But I’m wondering if all the hullabaloo beforehand is worth the end result. No, imho.

  11. BSR,

    Hoopy Birthday my good man!

Grand post, mate. And I hope your health worries are behind you.

We’re not a bad bunch on here,by and large. For me,the trick is to put your point across while appreciating those of others. Chuck in an occasional shaft of insight, some wit,a wee memory from years ago.

Well, that’s my mission statement, and I hope to achieve it one day.

My tuppence worth on the decline of the number of posts,

We have new CQN articles popping up on Newsnow that when you access them you find you cant post a comment – because there is no comment section. Thats bound to lead to a reduction in posts. Plus there is no easy way to find out which article is the current one that is still open for comments – other than clicking on all of the recent ones to see if the comment section is still current.

Haven’t noticed that its become more or less volatile in terms of disagreements between posters, its always been like this as far as I can recall. Yahoos are quickly sussed and leave because we have some very intelligent and able posters able to shoot them down, again think that has always been the case.

I think its because we are only able to post on one in every four articles that has led to the posting decline.

  17. Mates just off the phone apparently Celtic have inquired about Michael O’Neill, his daughter works for the IFA, just saying bhoys and ghirls

    Coolmore,

Afternoon. This blog is dominated by middle class socialists who certainly don’t, in my opinion, always reflect the wider Celtic support. It doesn’t put me off because it is predominantly a football blog. More importantly, reading only what one agrees with is a Stalinist mindset.

It is to Paul 67’s credit that he allows alternative thoughts. I’d prefer to see more posters as opposed to only wanting a blog for a select group of mates and opinions.

Maria Sharapova invites you for a drink.

She then says that she is a rotten, filthy Tory.

    Do CQN lefties:

A/ stick to their boring and self righteous beliefs and return to Pravda’s latest article about class consciousness.

    Or

B/ tell their weirdy, beardy comrades to do one and then proceed to enjoy the night of their lives?

    CAPTAINBEEFHEART

Have to query that, bud. It is not and never has been a blog for a select group of mates and opinions.

It is a blog on which people can display their opinions for all to see. That allows others to agree or disagree as they see fit. Most people I’ve met from here have different views on both politics and how the club is run. And quite a few other things,if I’m honest.

I’d like to think that someone having a different opinion from me is merely an opening for a friendly discussion. Sometimes it isn’t. I might not be in the best of moods,he might not be open to discussion.

You’ve been on here roughly the same length of time that I have. I’ve seen you getting a kicking, you’ve seen me getting a kicking. And a whole lot of others too.

Back then, people would discuss the points raised, and a wee bit of give and take later, all is well. Oh,and some right good abuse included, for the hell of it.

But even that was tongue in cheek, mainly!

Where I think he blog may have changed is that there are fewer occasions when someone says-haw,ye canny say that! As a result,it gets increasingly personal between those two posters.

I miss the days of just ripping the p… out of posters like that. It was certainly more fun than reading their stuff.

  24. Captain Beefheart on

    BT,

At the risk of(again) sounding boring and self righteous, neither bothers me too much, provided they don’t lecture me or are unable to listen to different views.

Lots of working class people are Tories.

  25. Regarding posting.

I read cqn everyday, at different times throughout the day and night.

I don’t post a lot as I find that the more eloquent posters among us are saying the things that I would want to say.

    I love it.

    (CQN) I mean.

  26. captain braveheart.

I Couldn’t care less if she’s a tory or a lefty I certainly wouldn’t accept an invitation if grunted and screamed when she serves up a drink as she does when serving at tennis, when she’s playing tennis I don’t wish to hear all the noise that comes out of her mouth, Nauseating tory if she is one.

  27. Maria Sharapova? She would get a KB from me. Cannae even watch her playing tennis with thon irritating grunting and squealing like a pig with it’s Dennis Laws caught in a mangle.

  28. The Battered Bunnet on

Humour. That’s the thing that’s most conspicuously absent lately.

Too many people wanting to be heard, too few with something to say. It kills the humour. It’s not a great surprise, CQN after all is where we have gathered for 10 years, and as it has grown, so the character of the blog has changed as new posters joined and others left. Some in the saddest circumstances.

The site now also has sufficient reach to be used by political interest groups as part of their social media strategy, which is a great pity, as such folk don’t appreciate the community that CQN is. If a political party wants to use the blog to disseminate a message, at least have the courtesy to buy some advertising.

Naturally the site has to evolve, and fair play to David and Co for trying new ideas, and moreover, for killing those ones that don’t work. (BTW, the site crashes IE umpteen times each day). But there is an impact on the nature of the site as it transitions towards a more content conspicuous medium.

And somewhere along the line we’ve lost some personality, the humility to laugh at ourselves, and thus the pleasure of laughing with friends, and the community is lessened accordingly. I expect if some folk posted fewer comments, gave some more thought to their posts, perhaps even allowed the other guy a different point of view, they’d be able to say more, and we’d probably be better informed/engaged/humoured. Which on reflection is about the least humorous, most self-absorbed piece of pish I’ve ever read on here.

The Shabby Chapeau now complains that Dick Byrne and Cadizzy don’t spend enough time on CQN. Which only goes to show that no blog can have a sufficiency of yellow cagoules and matching cod pieces, it seems.

What we need is more Embrocation.
