The joy of living today, tomorrow

893

After writing a piece on our European season for the forthcoming CQN Magazine I read the excellent contribution from SFTB this morning.  It is only natural that we live in the moment but for the last 70 years of the 20th century Celtic fans, more than anyone else, viewed each day in its historical context.

Older generations would have had little choice but to keep their history alive during the lost decades between the mid-20s and mid-60s.  7-1 and the Coronation Cup, each magnificent and modest in their own way, were the highlights, while the legend of Jimmy McGrory more than anyone established what was known as the Celtic Way.

Then came Lisbon.  In an instant, all that history was eclipsed.  New heroes, one of whom recalled to me he was told Celtic would amount to nothing with him in the team by a ‘fan’ a few years earlier, changed everything, but for this most historical of clubs, the inheritance was not all positive.

If Jimmy McGrory established Celtic as a remarkable goal-scoring team, the incessant attacking that afternoon in Lisbon cast an unattainable shadow.  It proved Celtic could win the European Cup by playing fabulous football but set a template we were cursed to attempt to follow.

The rules of the off-field game have changed often since those days, no more so than this season, when Celtic grew from a team who were penned into their own penalty box by HJK Helsinki, who needed a goal to knock us out of Europe in August, from a team the Turin media were joyous when Juventus beat home and away.  Thoughts of ‘Maybe we could win this” have since emerged in Turin.

I’ve loved every minute of this season, from the last minute header in Moscow to the last minute header in Dingwall. Adding context to it is a joy for one of our tomorrows.

My first away trip to Europe as well. Remember the bricks and seats being thrown at us, the Olympic Stadium being a dump, Graeme Sinclair marking Cruyff out of the game and Packy Bonner’s finest hour and a half. Nicholas’s goal was a cracker as well, though when I saw it again many years later it didn’t seem as good as my memory had previously told me it was.

General view is that Milan are in for a hard night … Being 2 up might not be enough but Barca are a wee bit slow / vulnerable in defense .

2-0 full time, 3-0 after extra time. Milan’s huge mistake was celebrating in front of their fans as if they had already qualified. That and Xavi is back.

Yes. Ajax’s stadium was indeed a dump.

When Chicken George scored into the goals at the opposite end from us, we could hardly make it out it was so far away!

It took a few seconds for it to sink in that we scored.

The riot police surrounded us in our section and stood and faced us.

Meanwhile, behind their backs, they were lobbing anything onto us.

The police just stood there in their white crash helmets.

Never a fan of Ajax since.

On the way over, a fan on the bus we travelled on which left from Shettleston, introduced us to Live Alive Oh, the live album by the Wolfe Tones.

On the ferry over, he actually got them to put it on their music system, so that it was piped all over the boat!

We were in the restaurant having something to eat when BOTOB came on!

    Unbelievable.

  20. AS Paul mentioned in his post, we are working on the new issue of CQN Magazine and this will be out on Friday. One of the regular columns in the magazine is the Bookies Corner and we have a guest writer this month from the MSM. I noticed that the feature is tipping horses for the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday so I thought I stick the column on the blog early so that the betting guys can have a look. Don’t blame me if they all lose!

Believe me,it’s simply the excitement of escaping my Mum’s clutches!

He really looks forward to me going home.

Unfortunately,my Mum patrols the perimeter fence, jackboots on and bayonet fixed, while my sisters man the watchtowers.

    An interesting battle of wills…
