The joy of living today, tomorrow

893

After writing a piece on our European season for the forthcoming CQN Magazine I read the excellent contribution from SFTB this morning.  It is only natural that we live in the moment but for the last 70 years of the 20th century Celtic fans, more than anyone else, viewed each day in its historical context.

Older generations would have had little choice but to keep their history alive during the lost decades between the mid-20s and mid-60s.  7-1 and the Coronation Cup, each magnificent and modest in their own way, were the highlights, while the legend of Jimmy McGrory more than anyone established what was known as the Celtic Way.

Then came Lisbon.  In an instant, all that history was eclipsed.  New heroes, one of whom recalled to me he was told Celtic would amount to nothing with him in the team by a ‘fan’ a few years earlier, changed everything, but for this most historical of clubs, the inheritance was not all positive.

If Jimmy McGrory established Celtic as a remarkable goal-scoring team, the incessant attacking that afternoon in Lisbon cast an unattainable shadow.  It proved Celtic could win the European Cup by playing fabulous football but set a template we were cursed to attempt to follow.

The rules of the off-field game have changed often since those days, no more so than this season, when Celtic grew from a team who were penned into their own penalty box by HJK Helsinki, who needed a goal to knock us out of Europe in August, from a team the Turin media were joyous when Juventus beat home and away.  Thoughts of ‘Maybe we could win this” have since emerged in Turin.

I’ve loved every minute of this season, from the last minute header in Moscow to the last minute header in Dingwall. Adding context to it is a joy for one of our tomorrows.

  1. BMCUWP, taking Miss Doc is one of the reasons Mrs Doc doesn’t put up more resistance, she thinks its good for us to spend time together, which it is.

It also gets me to CP, and adds another lifelong Tim.

  2. I saw the highlights of the Ajax game on one of the muticultural channels over here,my da was astounded when I told him.

As for Rab Prentice I believe he was a nephew of Bill and Bob shankly, ended up playing over here with the Toronto Blizzard along with Drew Busby and the thug that ruined Brian McLaughlin’s career.

The tackle on Brian was shameful, and should have lead to much more severe punushment.

You would think in this day of tv scrutiny that it would, but we never heard much about any proceedings being taken on the madman who wrecked John Kennedy’s career.

Both absolutely criminal acts, and on two exceptionally promising young men.

    ‘Celtic were formed in 1888.

The officeholders of the club accepted personal liability for all debts until the club became a limited company on 12 April 1897.

On that day registration number SC003487 was given to The Celtic Football and Athletic Company Limited – a private limited company.

In 1994 Fergus McCann opened the club up to 10,000 supporters by making the club a public limited company, which then became known as Celtic PLC.

It is the same company, with the same registration number, SC003487.

On the same day the company became a PLC, Fergus, in his wisdom, registered a new company, with exactly the same name as the old company (The Celtic Football and Athletic Company Limited), in order to prevent another party registering the name, which retains an historical association with Celtic.

The new company is wholly owned by Celtic PLC.’

Basically, Fergus wanted to stop anyone else using our original name when we changed it in 1994.

One of the highlights of my life was playing back to back blues piano with this man in Winnipeg in 1981 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Joe_Duskin for one night only. The contrast being a youngish whie blues piano player (me) and a groover who came outta retirement and ye couldnae see where one started and the other one finished.. We went down a storm and became friends until he died.

He said the proudest words to me in my life, apart from my good lady from Wimborne saying to me, “I do…”, when he said, , ” Kid….you maight have white skin, but you got black soul. Proud to have met your acaquaintance. ”

I have told very few people that story, but I tell you coz I know you’ll get it.

Basically, Fergus wanted to stop anyone else using our original name when we changed it in 1994.

That and the fact that wee Fergus was very shrewd and knew that Celtic’s heritage would eventually be a big merchandise seller so keeping this name allows us to sell merchandise with “The Celtic Football and Athletic Coy” on it.

    Smart man was Fergus.

  22. One year ago I was given a c.a.t. Scan……..minimal emphysemic damage halted by cessation of smoking.

One year later…..identical scan….large inoperable small cell incurable cancer. 2 yrs. maximum. I am heartbroken. I am 62.

    I am done for.

All I can do is “rage rage rage against the dying of the light….” and that is what I choose to do.

Then I think of Wee Oscar, the mighty example to us all amd I am humbled by his innocent spiritual grace and strength. My wee hero.

In due course there are a couple of beautiful guitars coming his way when my days end.

    This I promise.

  23. Clyde Football Club could be in line for a homecoming after making an approach to South Lanarkshire Council to move back to Rutherglen.

The local authority has said that it has received a proposal from the club regarding a move back to the town where they resided for almost 90 years.

The announcement comes after the club stated it was planning a move to South Lanarkshire – but to East Kilbride.

And the news that the club wants to leave Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld has left current landlords, North Lanarkshire Council, stating that it wants the Bully Wee to remain rooted to the town.

Asked about a move to South Lanarkshire, a South Lanarkshire Council spokesman said: “We can confirm we have been approached by officials from Clyde FC about the possibility of them moving to a site in Rutherglen.

“It would be inappropriate to discuss any further details at this time.”

    Agreed, a clever man.

I hadn’t thought of that as a reason to keep hold of the original name.
