The joy of living today, tomorrow

893

After writing a piece on our European season for the forthcoming CQN Magazine I read the excellent contribution from SFTB this morning.  It is only natural that we live in the moment but for the last 70 years of the 20th century Celtic fans, more than anyone else, viewed each day in its historical context.

Older generations would have had little choice but to keep their history alive during the lost decades between the mid-20s and mid-60s.  7-1 and the Coronation Cup, each magnificent and modest in their own way, were the highlights, while the legend of Jimmy McGrory more than anyone established what was known as the Celtic Way.

Then came Lisbon.  In an instant, all that history was eclipsed.  New heroes, one of whom recalled to me he was told Celtic would amount to nothing with him in the team by a ‘fan’ a few years earlier, changed everything, but for this most historical of clubs, the inheritance was not all positive.

If Jimmy McGrory established Celtic as a remarkable goal-scoring team, the incessant attacking that afternoon in Lisbon cast an unattainable shadow.  It proved Celtic could win the European Cup by playing fabulous football but set a template we were cursed to attempt to follow.

The rules of the off-field game have changed often since those days, no more so than this season, when Celtic grew from a team who were penned into their own penalty box by HJK Helsinki, who needed a goal to knock us out of Europe in August, from a team the Turin media were joyous when Juventus beat home and away.  Thoughts of ‘Maybe we could win this” have since emerged in Turin.

I’ve loved every minute of this season, from the last minute header in Moscow to the last minute header in Dingwall. Adding context to it is a joy for one of our tomorrows.

On this, I’ll side with you. There’s a time and a place for dewy-eyed sentimentality, and it’s not 3 days after a miserable performance like Saturday’s.

Paul67 is protesting too much, ina ‘Isn’t it just so great without Rangers?’ type fashion. It is, of course, pretty good without Rangers, but when players use their absence as an excuse to phone it in, I find that I get irritated. My mind certainly doesn’t smugly wander down the avenue of ‘historical perspective’ (whatever that means).

Was there anything in the rumour that Glasgow City Council had rejected Celtic application for a safe standing section recently?

Three ball boys with there mobiles, ref stops his watch has a look and says aye or no. 1 min 30 secs to decide. Cost = 3 x £5 top up.

If this is the same parade that passed St. Andrew’s Cathedral on St. Patrick’s Day last year, just as the Mass finished, celebrating Catholicism in Scotland ( with choirs from Highland & Island communities), then do me a favour & tell them to stay at home.

A beautiful, spiritual experience for those who attended, was completely spoiled by a strutting, drunken exhibition of everything we have had inflicted on us for centuries.

We don’t need to imitate our sad oppressors.

Leave this kind of nonsense to those who don’t know any better.

    A wee question.

Did a few bets today, one was a seven race e/w acca all were placed, apart from one race that wasn’t ran today, the site still says to run.

Will they honour the acca minus the non race ? or will I have to hassle them ?

The race should have been today, not in two days time.

    TET,

  11. SFL proposing 12-12-10-10 league set up with Celtic & Sevco colt teams being added to current 42.

If they had a colt team they’d probably beat their first team

  12. I watched a program on Van Basten where it was stated he kept getting ops on his knee even though surgeons could find nothing wrong with it.

He moved from surgeon to surgeon until each one agreed there was a problem.

Apparently most thought the problem was in his head, not his leg.

On Clyde sharing with Glencairn, one of the worst playing surfaces ever.

It was built as part of the deal for buying their old ground for the M74 extension, there was no drainage put in and the whole park was clay.

Hamilton leased it from them for training and reserve games a couple of seasons ago, they spent a fortune using there own groundsmen to bring the park up to scratch, games still cancelled this year.

  13. Standing area at Celtic park?

Clubs bidding for promotion to Scottish

football’s top flight would not be

required to have any seated areas in their

    stadiums under league reconstruction

    plans.

STV has seen a draft copy of the rulebook

    for the proposed Scottish Professional

Football League, which would see all 42

senior clubs come under one league body.

At present, clubs participating in the

Scottish Premier League are required to

have a minimum of 6,000 seats, with

    standing not permitted.

The proposed rules will instead see teams

playing in the top two tiers of the SPFL

needing only to meet Scottish FA Bronze

club licensing criteria, which calls for a

    minimum of “500 covered places”.

It is stated those areas “may be seats

and standing”, with an “adequate level of

cover available for both home and away

    spectators”.

From the third tier down, clubs are

required only to provide 100 “covered

places”. It is understood the matter is still

up for discussion, but has been included

in the draft of the rulebook.

  15. “SFL proposing 12-12-10-10 league set up with Celtic & Sevco colt teams being added to current 42.”

How is this a pyramid system?

How does it help Scottish football?

Sevco colts already play in the 42… its called the first team

The exiled Tim, bet valid for today only. Race is void. Well done.

  16. A colts team? What a magnificent idea, lets send our promising young kids out to get there legs broke by the ibrokes mob.

A slap in the face for the likes of Cove, Spartans.

Would love to see a Celtic colt team, but a hun colt team…….it all points to no matter the finances over at the bigot dome, they will make sure there is always a team playing in blue there, whatever happens.

I heard that on RS on the way home from work and laughed my erchie off. The sevco “top” side have struggled against the mince of scottish football (and I mean no disrespect to mince).

    How would their colts fare?

What utter tosh. Still, I did get to drive home with a smile on my face.

  19. Oh dear god, that bloody French horse that choked to 2nd at cheltenham to Quevega – I can’t even bring meself to spell it or name it; cost me £900 in a £10 treble.

I know nothing about horses, so I looked at what the tipsters were saying, and I picked what the majority thought would win.

Was sweating a bit on the last race, four of the tipsters went for Shangani, all the other races had at least six tipsters going for what I picked.

    Just a numbers game really.

Not a huge return as a couple were short odds favs, but enough for stakes the rest of the meet.

    So well done to the tipsters >}

  22. Was it Longmuir that proposed this “colts” idea, if it was I doff my hat to the absolute genius. It must have taken him years to come up with this, I think he should replace Ogilvie as the man to take Scottish football forward.

  23. There’s not enough money to go round in Scottish football so let’s add two more teams – brilliant!
