The joy when great champions lose

233

There is significant pleasure this morning that Juventus are out of the Serie A Champions League spots.  As prime protagonists in the European Super League fiasco, the definitive poster boys for cheating, as well as claiming titles that are not actually theirs (cough), they deserve all the antagonism coming their way.  More than all this, however, we all like to see a successful club taken down a peg.

Apart from when it is us, of course, there was nothing pleasant about going from 12 trophies in a row to an empty season.  Like Juventus, Celtic looked imperious a year ago on securing nine titles in a row.  I am of the view that fans of most other clubs have a milder form of dislike for Celtic than Newco/Oldco, it is certainly true of Aberdeen, Hibs, Dundee United and I suspect even Hearts fans.  Those of a couple of teams from my native Lanarkshire will forever be the holdouts.  Notwithstanding an occasional fondness for Celtic, every other club and set of fans in Scotland wanted our run to stop.  We became the greatest scalp in Scottish football history.

Success like this was great for Celtic and Juventus, and lousy for all other clubs, but it was also great for competitions in both countries.  Every cup competition in Scotland from 2016 until Ross County knocked us out of the League Cup in November had an intensity the sponsors could not dream about.

Great sport requires great champions but the greatest sport is when the greats lose.  I watched the World Snooker Championship this month and noted the only finals mentioned on TV that involved six-times winner Steve Davis were the two he lost, to Dennis Taylor and Joe Johnson.  The former’s win ranking in the top TV sporting moments of the decade.

Those two Davis loses were a blip, he won the next three at a canter.  Great champions also know how to recover.  I expect no less from Celtic.

No fans at the last home game tomorrow, just as well the atmosphere would be very unpleasant, to say the least as fans make their feelings known, no doubt with at least a few choruses of “why are we waiting”

Unless something materially changes Eddie Howe will be unveiled as Celtic manager on Monday and will talk to the fans for the first time. Announcement of the appointment will be before then but no earlier than Thursday. Eddie has been working with a view to next season for weeks.

    That should cheer you up!

So TGD’s son releases market sensitive information on a sock puppet twitter account?

Well that will reassure all those who have been concerned about the lack of professionalism evident in the running of the club.

  6. I can’t help but notice the cult have started with the political posts already today.

No doubt the usual suspects will be on to object and complain.

The Gonzaga/Crown Prince Desmondo Twitter account has been posting cryptic and ultimately unfounded garbage about Celtic for months.

You can only Google references to it as the account is private and only lets approved users access their tweets.

I am with Deniabhoy – completely apathetic about whole process.

  8. 1980 Cup Final v Huns, I was there with Two mates, and we just stood in the Celtic End watching the chaos unfolding. We were aged around 24/25 at the time…far too mature to get involved LOL. We had Wives and Mortgages to consider…LOL

At the end of the game, IF I remember correctly there was about 2 dozen young Celtic supporters ( Wee Bhoys), who were on the Pitch at the half way line, jumping and dancing about waving their Celtic scarfs…and once the Huns had seen that….They ( Including GROWN MEN), raced onto the Pitch to get at the young Celtic Bhoys….The young Celtic Bhoys ran for their life…and on seeing that ” UNFAIR FIGHT”…hundreds of older Celtic supporters then also entered into it.

Okay, the young Celtic Bhoys shouldnt have been on the Pitch……but as usual the ADULT Huns who ran on to get at those youngsters was just typical of the Huns, who showed once again that they simply could NOT take getting BEAT !

    HH.

  9. The Celtic supporters also went NUTS…when the ADULT Huns raced onto the Pitch…The Polis on Horses started chasing the young Celtic Bhoys….Typical of the Polis.

  10. Young Michael Conroys BEST game for Celtic…Aided and Abetted by Rot Aitken, in the centre of Celtics back four. Big Roy talked young Michael throughout the game to stiffle The Hun Chump Derek Johnstone.

I think Johnstone only managed ONE Free header at Celtics goal that day.

We were VERY concerned in the build up to the game because we were missing Tom MacAdam and Roddie MacDonald thru injury and/or suspension ?

The Huns were super confident before the game, and in all honestly we were worried that the Hun Johnstone would be too good in the Air for our inexperienced Centre Halves…but Roy and young Michael were superb that day.

But in an attempt to to lift you from apathy (and me too)

The press rumblings on who Celtic are looking to hire as next Manager has gone dead

In my opinion this means Celtic are not looking

There can only be one reason why we are not looking

    Someone has been found

All the noise says Eddie Howe (brilliant if true)

    Why no announcement ??

    I have no idea – Contract/Legal/out with old season-in with the new/Bournemouth playoffs/Backroom staff/

But I take the view DD has a deal done and all will be revealed when Celtic want/or are allowed

So relax enjoy the summer (stay out of Benidorm you will get in trouble)

and trust in our Club (BTW I need to practice what I preach)

  20. Apologies for a political post, I kept off CQN during the post-election stooshie, but although not a supporter of the SNP, credit to Nicola Sturgeon for her statement in support of the Palestinians. I won ‘t hold my breath for a similar statement from Labour’s knight of the realm.

Any football news? No, thought not.

  21. There’s an interesting article on Video Celts about EH’s contract, which gives us hope. Or so we hope.

  22. Meanwhile, as we wait on a manager who got his last club relegated, one of the media favourites for the job at one of England’s biggest clubs, Tottenham Hotspur, Scott Parker has just managed to get Fulham relegated for the second time. And not only that he achieved this by winning thus far only five matches this season, the same number as both Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion, who no prizes for guessing have also been relegated. Cannot be too long before Scott is linked with us. Parker that is.
