The Juninho EBT

1126

I see several “fans’ groups” are engaged on the subject of our old friend, Juninho, who played around 13 games for Celtic eight years ago and benefited from an Employee Benefit Trust before and during his time at the club.

Can you believe this is where their focus is?

As Sir David Murray and a gaggle of his former directors will tell you, there is nothing illegal in EBTs, it’s the undeclared second contracts the football authorities have a problem with. Juninho’s EBT was not subject to any contract or side letter whatsoever. Moreover, our then chairman, Brian Quinn, regarded EBTs with suspicion and instructed the club to declare Juninho’s to the Revenue. Celtic even paid tax on money paid to the EBT.

The SFA and SPL, and every journalist in Scotland interested in getting a story right, are fully aware of the facts.

I suppose running with this beats looking at links between Green and Whyte. Keep up the good work, guys!

And for the record, stripping titles is not the ultimate sanction, not by the length of Argyle St.

  1. gutted, but not as gutted as “The rangers” when they are stripped of their ill-gotten titles.

I think that if the Juninho story had any legs at all,the MSM would have been over it like a rash.

That they are not,for me,speaks volumes.

Other threads in hunnyland suggest that we knew what Rangers were up to,W-A-Y back, but decided not to tip them off that their business plan was flawed.

    Firstly,not our problem.

Secondly,I believe that Brian Quinn explained to Murray, with little detail lacking, just how it was likely to backfire.

I suppose Murray thought the Establishment would provide,as they always had.

It seems that the Establishment might not have been getting enough back to justify that.

    Tough,eh?

I was arguing with a stupid Hun last week about this,,,tried telling him that Brian Quinn/ Celtic paid back every penny, but he wasn’t having it,,,deluded fool!!!

Does not help though when the MSM feed the trolls paranoia, like today’s article in the DR,which has a wee dig at the Juninho’s transfer to Celtic,,,,pathetic, and another reason why Celtic fans should not buy any papers!!!!!

  5. All the statements from you in the world aren’t going to make this go away Paul.

The whole controversy over Juninho could be nipped in the bud by the club saying that his payments were all contained within one contract of service lodged with the SPL and SFA.

It looks almost certain that Juninho was offered £40k per week for two years, that we took a view on how wise it was to continue with that arrangement come late 2004/early 2005 and decided to offer him terms to go early. We did the same with Gravesen. Now, if we told the SFA/SPL that we were going to give him £4million over two years, and ended up paying him about £2million for nine months, then how are any of his payments undeclared to the SPL and SFA, notwithstanding that the EBT was used for the golden goodbye?

Rangers problem is they said they would pay, for instance, Canniggia x amount, and ended up paying him x plus y. Canniggia was, as I recall, a player who was much coveted by O’Neill, and who scored against us in a Cup final, but that’s by the by.

Juninho seems to have received no more money from the club than was disclosed in his contract of service; use of EBTs is neither here nor there as far as the SPL is concerned.

My problem is, why doesn’t the club issue a statement saying just that, in order to controvert the suggestion that our errant, and later corrected, use of EBTs, was in any way comparable with their deliberate shadowing of contractual payments from the authorities to dodge tax? The club needs to say something on this.

  6. Good clarification yet again, Paul.

How do we get this information in front of the deluded eyes of their supporters / groups? Even a half page ad in the press probably wouldn’t get it through to them. Talk about clutching at straws !!

  7. Paul67

I wish you would not show them the error of their ways, as it is much more fun seeing them make a complete fool of themselves.

Park assisting Green, nothing to worry about there for the huns…

  8. Juninho’s EBT, let them concentrate on that. Meanwhile…

A move to liquidate Craig Whyte’s parent company that owns ‘oldco’ Rangers has been suspended.

The Registrar of Companies lodged its intention to dissolve Rangers FC Group Ltd last month.

It had made the decision as the company that owned an 85% stake in what was The Rangers Football Club plc had not been active or trading for 12 months.

However, the attempt to dissolve the parent company, which was formerly known as Wavetower, has been stopped after an “objection to the striking off has been received by the Registrar”, a document lodged with Companies House has revealed.

It is unclear if Mr Whyte has lodged the objection to the striking off, while should the Registrar decide the action is once again raised by the registrar a further public notice will be published.

Can you just confirm then that all payments made to Juninho, including any made via the EBT were within the terms of his registration. That’s not actually clear from your article.

I think you know, as well as we do, that the SPL investigation of Rangers also has little to do with tax paid, or 2nd contracts – it’s whether there were football payments made that were undeclared in the registration documents.

  12. Paul67 – I was under the impression that Juninho’s EBT was actually for his severance pay rendering any discussion whatsoever on fielding ineligible players moot….

  13. Rangers fans groups have objected to the Mars landing and have demanded that NASA recall the unmanned probe. The Rangers Supporters Assembly, the Rangers Supporters Trust and the Rangers Supporters Association said in a statement. “We have just found out a ‘Rover’ has been sent to Mars, everyone is aware of the part played by the chairman of ‘Rovers’ in the witch hunt against our great club and we feel this is just another slap in the face for the ordinary gers fan. We demand the immediate recall of this probe.”

    ….the Rover, that is.

  20. BMCUWP – If rangers had taken advice on EBTs from a lawyer as distinguished as Paul Baxendale-Walker, why would they listen to Celtic?

  21. Celtic don’t need to make any statement on Juninho to anyone other than the SPL. Anything else just adds to the noise.

  22. SonsOfErin

    lol!

I still have that BBC interview recorded and I always laugh that the entire rangers EBT defence is based on what that guy told them.

  23. IF…and it’s a BIG IF…we are found to have registered Juninho incorrectly then we must be punished. It is only fair.

However, our punishment for fielding an ineligible player for 14 games (wiki) pales in comparison to 38 players over 11 years.

    Bring it on I say.
