The keeper’s deal with the devil

260

The job of a backup keeper is unlike any other role.  Unlike outfield players, they can often pick up a wage without ever seeing first team action.  There was recently a keeper at Benfica who had more winners’ medals than appearances to his name.

It’s a deal with the devil.  Pick up wages not available elsewhere, but give up on actually playing football.  Craig Gordon chose the route less travelled in 2020, when he rejected a contract at Celtic and moved to Hears for around half the money, in order to play.  Just one week later, Fraser Forster decided against signing for Celtic, we were left without a keeper and Craig missed out on playing for Celtic, as well as a bumper contract.

Benjamin Siegrist left Dundee United two years ago knowing he would see little action at Celtic.  Four appearances later he is off to join Neil Lennon at Rapid Bucharest.  You have to assume he hopes to play there, but at 32 and having been inactive for so long, there are no guarantees he will make the grade.

Well said and Joe Hart obviously respected Benj.

Joe Hart’s message to his move to Rapid, the now retired Hart reacted on Instagram. Commenting on the post which confirmed Siegrist’s transfer, he sent a simple message which read ‘Go on big Benj’:

Butland will be getting hawked round Championship teams

    ……………………

Not sure many Championship teams could afford £30m 🤔😂

  3. Imagine if Jock had refused or been refused the chance to manage Celtic, what would Celtic be like today? Would the likes of other key people in our history such as King Kenny and the King of Kings signed for us?

  4. garygillespieshamstring on

If Dorus De Vries had shown anything, Craig probably wouldn’t have been near our first team under Brendan.

Brendan signed DDV because he could use his feet. Craig only got back in the team because DDV was unconvincing with his hands.

Likewise, Brendan had a preference for Bain as he was better with the ball at his feet than Craig was.

Times were simpler when a guy got stuck in goal because he couldn’t play fitba and then found he had a knack for keeping the ball out of the goal.

If Paul67 puts up an article with his spin on it so ne it – the idea that he is the almighty that can’t be questioned has never seemed to me his approach, quite the opposite actually.

Don’t know about the flag but that is the most wonderful Celtic photo . Right up there with those from 1967 .

  7. As both my grannies were among the children for whom Celtic were founded and the possibility that otherwise I might not even be here, my vote has to go to Br Walfrid.

As for actual players I have watched, that has to be Bobby Murdoch. As Jock Stein said, “when Bobby plays, Celtic play”.

From desperation came celebration. “A football club will be formed for the maintenance of dinner tables for the children and the unemployed.” “Glasgow Celtic is the name.”

    True.

    100% shut out record.

Clyde and Ayr United I remember. Did he play any others?

  10. glendalystonsils on

Sinisalo is presumably happy to cool his heels during stage one of the ‘succession plan’ . It’s also a relief to know that we can bring a very capable keeper on from the bench if Kaspar should get injured or sent off .

Bain, on the other hand is simply emergency cover and a token Scot . That’s no criticism of him , I’m sure he has a very healthy bank balance while not quite being up to the standard we require .

Bernardo – first it was the fee, then it was his personal terms, now it’s the add-on 🤔

    Glendalys

Indeed, what a life never do a ‘shift,’ stay fit, go round the world with your mates, sing dance at parties, collect big gold medals, and watch Celtic and your bank balance grow.

  14. garygillespieshamstring on

    Probably the right order.

Can’t talk terms with the player till club gives permission.

No point in negotiating add ons if the player hasn’t agreed terms with the buying club.

  15. Most important Celt

Is a good question and one were no answer is definitive,we are Celtic, you and i,what we see as pivotal in our clubs history is important to us for our own reasons.we hold that dear.

    I would break into 3

    Executive

    Management

    Players

In Executive Brother Walfrid, for the idea of Celtic and the noble causes it was set up for, causes still gathered for on buses and supporters clubs at dances around the globe.Motioning up to the modern day the good Brothers legacy was reset and bolstered by FergusMcCann which left us with a wonderful stadium and OUR foundation which gives £millions raised by us to a myriad of outreach projects at home and wherever Celtic men and woman meet.

    Management

    Jock Stein

His resetting in football terms made Celtic a global name, the highest pinnacle reached in Lisbon i doubt will be reached by any Scottish team.

    Players

Every player wearing the hoops is special, each decade bring their own heroes,Johnny Madden,Jimmy Quinn,John Thompson,Jimmy McGrory,Fernie,Collins,The lions, kenny, big Roy,McGrain,McStay,Henryk, right up to Calmac and Kyogo, long may tbe heroes keep coming, long may the ma’s and da’s and family members keep telling us of the history, its different to us all but Celtic is the common seam of gold runnin thro

Fergus, jock and Jinky for me,no arguements as youll convince me :-))

    HH

  16. garygillespieshamstring on

We’ll say X%, they’ll say Z% and then both will agree on Y%.

Possibly the most expensive part of the deal if Jota is anything to go by.

  17. Weebobbycollins on

Hugo Bueno? Good full-back, pacy, can tackle and can cross a ball.

Would be a smart move as long as there is an option to buy.

  18. garygillespieshamstring on

I would have thought Bob Kelly might have been worth a mention in dispatches.

He took over as chairman after the death of Tom White, who by all accounts was a hard act to follow, at a very difficult time for the club.

Fought the good fight against attacks from inside the SFA and for others, particularly over the flag issue.

Also strongly pushed the development of our own players and always emphasised the importance of playing the Celtic way. Admittedly, his stubbornness and interference in team selections and tactics were to the club’s detriment st times.

He also eventually recognised that change was required in the way the club was going and he took the decision to offer the manager’s post to Jock Stein, leading to the most successful period in our club’s history.

Indeed, Jock Stein himself said that he believed no one had gone more for Celtic than Bob Kelly.

Having said all that, strong cases can be made for l the contributions of many people both on and off the field and as supporters.

All bookended by Brother Walfrid (and his helpers) at the beginning and Fergus McCann in the 90s, without whom we might not have Celtic today.

A very thought provoking question leading to a lot of interesting comments.

The big squeeze is on to help finance the erection of that new penny-pinching stand being built.

I thought bernardo handled himself well in the latter stages of the season & feel we have yet to see the best of him.
