The job of a backup keeper is unlike any other role. Unlike outfield players, they can often pick up a wage without ever seeing first team action. There was recently a keeper at Benfica who had more winners’ medals than appearances to his name.
It’s a deal with the devil. Pick up wages not available elsewhere, but give up on actually playing football. Craig Gordon chose the route less travelled in 2020, when he rejected a contract at Celtic and moved to Hears for around half the money, in order to play. Just one week later, Fraser Forster decided against signing for Celtic, we were left without a keeper and Craig missed out on playing for Celtic, as well as a bumper contract.
Benjamin Siegrist left Dundee United two years ago knowing he would see little action at Celtic. Four appearances later he is off to join Neil Lennon at Rapid Bucharest. You have to assume he hopes to play there, but at 32 and having been inactive for so long, there are no guarantees he will make the grade.

That’s the sound of the unfriendlies at the friendly in Birmingham…
WEEBOBBY
I’ll set them up, you can hit them away 👍
Came across this…I didn’t realise that John Beaton was so old.
“The season then ended in controversy when Celtic lost to Rangers in the semi-final of the Victory Cup, with numerous dubious decisions made against Celtic by a referee who appeared to be affected by alcohol.”

good and interesting list – with one maybe just slipped your mind but – Peerless Patsy.
I was listening again to the Celtic Exchange Battle for the Celtic episode with David Lowe.
That Patsy would be a superstar player but then amass a relative fortune, and be in a position that he actually had a shareholding in the club fascinates me.
His sons Willie and Thomas being significant in selling their shares in 94 to John Keane.
really interesting.

I would have thought Bob Kelly might have been worth a mention in dispatches.
—————
hhmmm, as divisive a figure as it gets, and I always (personal opinion) thought Jocks quote could be sarcastic as well.
For the young Bob, grew up in the ultimate Celtic household, his father being the first legendary Captain, but also the grandson of Joseph McErlean, one of the founders.
For a period they lived in the gallwgate in the grandparents house, before moving to Blantyre, with the fathers business success.
From the McCallum celtic in the war years, he was one of 6 brothers (and four sisters) that were all educated at Saint Josephs in Dumfries, It is not a stretch to imagine they must have known the old and retired brother walfrid.
An elder brother was killed after the war coming home.
They all played football, but none to any great successes of their father.
Almost inevitable that he would end up on the board, or some of them might. That he did aged only 30 is something the current PLC would not let happen, but I suppose around that time it is the start of the really family voting block, many of the shareholders are away across the seas, the rest at home become directors maybe by default.
He would become hailed as a great administrator of the game, and the Kelly kids being his creation.
Others would say 25 years of stagnation, interuppted by little random successes.
In a daft way, he was on the scottish league board, he opposed tv, world cups and even early european football.
A myth that he appointed to stein.
He first proposed Fallon with Jock as assistant,
Then sean and jock as co-managers.
Finally giving the job soley to jock because he would budge, it was full control or nothing.
Was he the last edwardian at celtic park ? accpetance of a knighthood sat well with him.
Not a hero for me, just another “owner” and self preservationist/
ps.
Bob was the administrator who insisted on the white ball be introduced.
A cartoon of the time, long lost, was everyone trying to see the old leather brown ball on a muddy pitch.

Good post re Bob Kelly.
In those days it was quite common in football for owners and chairmen to pick teams for particular games or at least to influence individual selections.
At that time, Scotland, England and Wales FAs had a committee of ‘Selectors’ to pick teams for international games.
Back to when did Jock first wear the hoops.
Just after the war, the summer fetes and various charities would run 5 aside tournaments , which celtic sent teams to, often more than one team to events around the country.
The years is 48 and there is a Coatbrig event, for whatever reason Celtic only had 4 players.
Albion Rovers had an extra, a young man who would play any game he could, breath in fresh air, away from the pit. He played for Celtic, i often wonder if after the event that was laughed at, or scorned, did his father say well done, or whit did ye dae that fur” ?
Celtic won the tournament, The winners got a wallet each as a prize.
God bless Jimmy Gribbin, he did more for the progress of those players than Kelly ever did.
Celtic Number One
couple of corrections –
Frances not Jospeh.
Brigton not the Gallowgate.
Still a good read.

those wanting new players, do not forget the 8 home growns needed for the CL squad.
Kvistgarden (spl)
He scored 9 goals last season .
I don’t think that is the credentials for a Celtic CF .
Does anyone have any reliable information that he is likely to do better than a Miovski or a Shankland .
We has signed some utter dross over the last dozen years as CF’s .

The Huns are signing 21 yer old Hannibal Mejbri on loan. He looked half decent for United when I’ve seen him play
They’re also loaning 26 year old Vaclav Cerny from Wolfsburg, 17 caps from the Czech Republic so a bit of pedigree
Far from Clement being crazy I think he’s doing what needs to be done. Get rid of all the losers, and all the rubbish Beale bought, get lots of young players in on permanents who he’d hope to turn into winners and fill the gaps with quality loans who will do a job for him while he sorts the mess out. No blingy crap, players who will do a job.
If he’s as intelligent as I think he is he’ll realise this is a project that cant be done in the space of a couple of transfer windows. The board seem to be driving this, and Clement, although he’s saying he was lied to when he took over the job seems to be completely on board.
It had to be done if they were to challenge us any time soon, Clement seems to be doing the hard work.
The big question is whether the board hold its nerve when results inevitably dont go as the Orcs want this season.
Have not has .

I don’t disagree with what you post .
Other than Tav should never be sold .
What they get for him ,won’t replace him .

I’m with Brendan,
Wednesday morning’s game with Manchester City, Rodgers confessed that the club need to bring two new strikers to the club this summer.
“I think my ideal scenario was to have three, was to have Kyogo, one other one and bring through a young player.
“That was the role we came up for at Rocco. It’s very difficult for a club of this size to have three number one strikers. You can live with two because we play so many games and the specific nature of the games then we can change it about. Three is very difficult. But I also think for development I want to bring some young, maybe a player from within.
“Rocco was that but he’s moved on. So we may have to look elsewhere. But three is a really good number. Two, I would say to be number one strikers, and one that we can nurture and develop.”

He’s the biggest loser of the lot, though, the standard bearer for a team that couldnt handle the pressure of being ahead in a title race.
I dont think its a coincidence that the first thing Clement did after they lost the league was strip him of the captaincy.

Good afternoon all from the Laurieston Bar. Lovely Guinness. 🍻

Good afternoon pal.
Is it an open invite to the Shipbank tomorrow?
As I should hopefully make it through. Won’t be till after work though and will be getting the train, which means arriving about 7pm.
Would that be ok? Or, will you all be too far gone by then or off to somewhere else? 😂
😃👍🇮🇪🏆🍀 🍻

7pm? I’m just warming up.
I’ll still be there. 👍
Rocco Vata scored for Watford last night in their 3-2 victory over Hibs at Easter Road.
Another incoming loan for the Huns?
Midfielder Joan Jordan from Sevilla, 30 year old.

Aye, we may have to move to the Tolbooth when the live music starts. Big Jimmy’s singing is even worse than his jokes.

“Hugo Bueno Sánchez is 1.73 Metres”
——————————–
Indeed he is. He is also 32, a Mexican and playing in the Mexican 2nd division.
We are interested in signing Hugo Bueno Lopez, who is Spanish, a left back, 21 years old and a left back.
Graeme Souness would have signed the wrong one.
TOM MCLAUGHLIN on 25TH JULY 2024 5:35 PM
I found that very, very funny.
Thanks.
Cheerio for now.
