The keeper’s deal with the devil

260

The job of a backup keeper is unlike any other role.  Unlike outfield players, they can often pick up a wage without ever seeing first team action.  There was recently a keeper at Benfica who had more winners’ medals than appearances to his name.

It’s a deal with the devil.  Pick up wages not available elsewhere, but give up on actually playing football.  Craig Gordon chose the route less travelled in 2020, when he rejected a contract at Celtic and moved to Hears for around half the money, in order to play.  Just one week later, Fraser Forster decided against signing for Celtic, we were left without a keeper and Craig missed out on playing for Celtic, as well as a bumper contract.

Benjamin Siegrist left Dundee United two years ago knowing he would see little action at Celtic.  Four appearances later he is off to join Neil Lennon at Rapid Bucharest.  You have to assume he hopes to play there, but at 32 and having been inactive for so long, there are no guarantees he will make the grade.

To add to the complexity in identifying the correct player HSL has an identical twin brother who plays for B Dortmund .

  4. I believe the maximum number of loans in and out is 6 , so the Hun will need to be selective in using that route to plug gaps when the high earners get pushed out.

Not the most important person for Celtic but certainly someone who has made Celtic what they are today…

Good evening all from the Victoria Bar.

But I’m a substitute for another guy

As you say, a man who divided opinions among the Celtic supporters.

Thanks for taking the trouble to provide all the background information. It was an informative read, as was the article your link took me to.

  8. No doubt I’ll get abuse for this post , but here goes.

The Manchester Airport ” attack ” filmed by some prick with his phone, did not, funnily enough film the start of the fracas, and as usual, the Police get it in the neck, society is fucking nuts I’m afraid sadly.

Gotta feel sorry for society now, when the aftermath is filmed, not the entire thing.

I didn’t realise that “interference” of that nature was so common in the game at that time. Any time I had heard about it was in the context of Celtic and Bob Kelly.

I was aware of the existence of the selectors in picking the Scotland team. It always puzzled me how a group of people could be convinced that Ronnie McKinnon should be picked before Billy McNeill!

I don’t know if I am correct in thinking that Tommy Docherty was the first Scotland manager to pick his own pool?

In retrospect, it was a bit of a puzzle that Jock Stein would take the Scotland job the first time under those circumstances when he reportedly stood up to Bob Kelly when Kelly said to him before the 1965 cup final that Bobby Murdoch wasn’t a right half.

Also my apologies for my post the other night if it came across as mocking the death of Desmond White, as that was not my intention.

I just found the idea of Celtic now inflating attendance figures ironic as I remember a number of my university acquaintances in the late 70s working as gatemen at Celtic Park complaining that Celtic declared attendances as lower than they actually were.

They were paid according to the attendance, with them getting an extra £1 if attendance was over 30,000 people. They used to say that the ground would be mobbed and the attendance was declared as 29,900 people. The view among the gatemen was that it was policy from Celtic to avoid paying them the extra money.

In retrospect, a poor attempt at humour on my part.

Once again, my apologies to you and anyone else I may have offended.

  10. Maybe another way I could ask the question would be the most important player or manager or owner in our history.

  11. lets all do the huddle on

the police arent there to dispense what they see as justice.

its not outside the dancing on a saturday night whereby if your mate gets jumped you pile in.

at that point the person was offering no threat.

the policeman is meant to be a professional so that should have been the route he took.

    but he decided on thuggery.

  12. According to the Daily Record, The Rangers have received a “concrete offer” for Conor Goldson. Things must be really bad with the Copland Stand when they are accepting offers of concrete in exchange for players.

It only applies to over 21s so they’ll be ok filling the squad with the usual stars-in-the-makings from the big EPL clubs

  14. A week before the start of August and there has been no article to discuss our signing needs. Or indeed, why we don’t need to strengthen.

We have had articles over a whole raft of less relevant points.

Is there a reason why we don’t wish to have an adult conversation on here?

    An oversight or something more?

    Seems odd.

Police officers like Prison officers are taught control & restraint techniques. A boot in the head then stamping on it, is not one of them

When Jock was offered the Celtic job in 1965 he made it clear to Bob Kelly that he would only accept if he was given full control over team selection.

His first stint as Scotland boss was always a temprary caretaker position so not sure how much say he had in team selection.

Kudos for your apology re Desmond White and I’m sure you meant no disrespect. You are a big man for that.

I will opt for in my lifetime the following:-

    Fergus

    Henke

    Martin O’Neil

    ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Sorry, but I am 66 years old, so I would still have to go for Jock, the Lisbon Lions plus King Kenny and the KoKs. But, I could accept Wee Fergus.

Btw…the first Scottish manager to pick his own team was Bobby Brown who chose the eleven to play against England at Wembley in 1967.

Less than a minute into Kilmarnock v Cercle Brugge and McLeod & McFadden make a sow’s ear of it.

Killie player runs along the by-line, the ball clearly goes over the line before he turns into the box and is tripped.

The referee clealy points to the corner of the 6-yard box, indicating a goal-kick.

McLeod’s voice rises a few decibels as he greets a penalty to Killie. McFadden joins in and describes it as a stonewaller. Even the sight of the referee jogging backwards up the park fails to alert these clowns.

Eventually the penny drops. McLeod tries to save their blushes by claiming the referee did initially point to the spot but changed his mind, which is utter nonsense.

    It’s gonna be a long season 👀

Fed up seeing players dive to the ground as soon as they feel a touch from behind. Already happened numerous times already with Killie. Obviously a tactic…
