The job of a backup keeper is unlike any other role. Unlike outfield players, they can often pick up a wage without ever seeing first team action. There was recently a keeper at Benfica who had more winners’ medals than appearances to his name.
It’s a deal with the devil. Pick up wages not available elsewhere, but give up on actually playing football. Craig Gordon chose the route less travelled in 2020, when he rejected a contract at Celtic and moved to Hears for around half the money, in order to play. Just one week later, Fraser Forster decided against signing for Celtic, we were left without a keeper and Craig missed out on playing for Celtic, as well as a bumper contract.
Benjamin Siegrist left Dundee United two years ago knowing he would see little action at Celtic. Four appearances later he is off to join Neil Lennon at Rapid Bucharest. You have to assume he hopes to play there, but at 32 and having been inactive for so long, there are no guarantees he will make the grade.

The not getting players in a few weeks before the season starts,to save a bit on wages is a red herring, when we have the likes of McCarthy and a few others doing nothing and getting thousands per week, also bad planning when a manager would want the players in as early as possible.
Adidas Friday 👍

Late to the earlier theme…
Not the most important person for Celtic but certainly someone who has made Celtic what they are today…
David Murray
Could you expand on that please Yorkbhoy

It was a bit of a joke.. but Murray killed Rangers trying to match The Lisbon Lions… and we have won trophy after trophy since their demise.

Looking forward to catching up with my chums, ‘the shipwrecks’ :)

Nice people.
First article. She knew oil was coming and decided to get in on it.
I can almost hear the royalists (including Ibrox denizens) splutter indignantly …..

Thanks for getting back mate, truly appreciated.
I do understand the humour and ridicule behind their demise, but matching our trophies count since they went down highlights the turnaround narrative that shows no insight or learning on their part.
They were “pitdoon” “demoteed” “relegateed” not one word bout being a new club, reconstituted on the same site as the club ended by David with all the accounting waffle that simply denies what David did to them.Used ably as an excuse by the same forces Celtic have been up against since they were formed, media, masons, bigots and a business class that dont like us.
I am sure like me yoh revel in every success Celtic have, its Celtics, not due to another clubs self harm,a self harm of entitlement and hubris that continues into Challs of Normandys entity which has lost money since it came into being in 2012.
Anyway Yorkbhoy, hope all good down your way, spent a couple of sundays working in Harrogate, lovely part of world.
Hail Hail
back to basics
The Crown Lands were surrendered to Parliament (under King George III) in 1760. The present set-up was created by the Crown Estate Act 1961. The Estate is held ‘In the Right of the Crown’ but is not the private property of the Monarch, (though they do benefit from a share of the profits) and it is not owned by the UK government either. It is administered by a Commission, the vast majority of any profits/income/revenue goes to the Treasury. Interestingly under the Scotland Act of 2016, the Crown Estate (Scotland) is run as a Public Corporation of the Scottish government. Offshore rights in Scotland though are limited to 12 nautical miles, and do not extend to the Continental Shelf. Nicola Sturgeon sold out these rights off the SW of Scotland for a fraction of that achieved by the UK government for the offshore of NW England despite sharing the same seas and similar conditions. Interesting also that Starmer has launched a partnership with the Crown Estate re Labour’s energy policy, and also that GB Energy will be based in Scotland, possibly Aberdeen but hopefully Glasgow. Not sure if that has been announced yet.

Just back from the pool.

Who?
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
BTW Sorry to hear that Big Jimmy is not well. I am in Glasgow for the game, so I could try to say hello to some of the Bhoys on here.
I remember during their tainted 9 in a row I was back in Gourock (pre-internet days) reading the Daily Record and on the same day that they had signed a multi million pound sponsorship deal (copyright DR) Celtic were getting the second hand light bulbs from the Hampden floodlights… That could have been the lowest point in my Celtic supporting life. Like everyone here I get upset when we lose a match or a cup or a league but this seemed that we had lost everything. A future as a team finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the league with an occasional cup win. If someone had told me what we would achieve in the years sine MON arrived I would have tested them for drugs. I hope we will win the league next season but I am never overconfident but there was a point when I didn’t think we would win the league again.

Great post. We’ve all felt that pain.

A gracious reply. I have to confess I haven’t checked or listed all of Paul’s leaders since the season ended or even since the transfer window opened to even know whether the accusation is true or not. I would be surprised if it was. I have a vague recollection of posters detecting and objecting to an anti-Brendan tone in Paul’s announcement that Kaspar Schmeichel was coming. If my memory is accurate, then Paul has referred to a recruitment strategy there, even if it was too tangential or not the main subject of his leader on that day. As I said, I haven’t checked back but I’m sure he’s also made passing reference to Adam Idah’s situation at Norwich (happy to be proved wrong) & maybe even defended the perceived existing strategy of Buying Guys before they get noticed by the big clubs and selling them when they become too good to accept our wage structure. If so, all of this is reference to recruitment and a refutation of the charge that it is never discussed.
Now, he may not have written an article that you described, outlining all the positions on which we need strengthening. I certainly cannot recall one like that but, as you said, other sites have that covered and other posters on here have regularly raised that topic and it has led to discussion.
So, if Paul has areas he prefers to raise and others he doesn’t that is his right and I don’t see a problem with it. It certainly isn’t done with a view to censoring or pretending it’s not a problem cos, if that was his aim, it is remarkably optimistic and a total failure. But, it isn’t- he just chooses to write about what takes his fancy and you and I get the same rights.
As for under-prepared. We start the same way every season i.e. we recruit at the start, the middle and the end of the transfer window and the season always begins before the window closes. It would be an ideal world if everybody we wanted was prepared to come early and their clubs were willing to sell early and they were all there at training on the first day of full squad training which, incidentally, doesn’t begin until Alastair Johnston returns. Actually it doesn’t really begin until our final signing of the transfer window turns up for training.
Happy to repeat the approach that led to a league cup loss to Kilmarnock last year- No- not happy. But I am resigned to the realities of the league starting before recruitment stops. That is true for us and many clubs. Just take a look at the clubs still doing deals on the last day and the last minute of the window. All of them would prefer it was not necessary but it’s a Chain System like buying a house in England used to be- you have to wait, sometime until the club you are buying a striker from is assured they have a replacement for their sought after player, and that they’ve got the maximum price they’re gonna get.
We’re just bloggers, posters and fans. Unless we have a relative who is a sought after player, we don’t get to influence the speed of a signing.
I still regret encouraging James McCarthy, Shane Duffy and Nat Phillips to sign😀
Celtic Mac – cheers.
Facts I did not know.
So …
1. They gave up the land but 200 years later they came up with a wheeze to profit from the seabed.
2. Strategic, economic and financial acumen in the Scottish government hovering just above zero?
