The kind of Armageddon that buys you a meal, takes you to a show & onto a nightclub

738

As far as Armageddons go, this one will surely be known as the Amiable Nursemaid of all Armageddons.  The kind that not so much wipes everyone out, but buys them a meal, then takes them to a show and onto a nightclub.

Sky has renewed their deal to cover the Scottish Premier League after Our Man sorted them out yesterday.  They will show a handful of Scottish Football League games as part of the deal, a nice quid-pro-quo for SPL clubs for their annual contribution to the lower leagues.

Delicious irony: those SFL rights are worth more to each SPL club than they are to any SFL club.

Chief harbinger of doom, Neil Doncaster, will, on the one hand, be relieved that there is still income to pay his wages.  On the other hand, he must surely be embarrassed at the spectacularly in accurate scenario he portrayed to SFL clubs, and to several people in the media.  Did he embark on a flamboyant bluff or did he simply not know what he was talking about?

Remember, why we are here in the first place… Our good causes this year are The Haven Centre in Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents’ Association.

We have already distributed over £2000 thanks to the sale of a Joseph Gormley painting back in April. We have two further fantastic paintings by Joseph; one of Scott Brown and one of Henrik Larsson. We also have a wonderful signed Neil Lennon print by the artist Gary Brandham.

The items are being raffled on ebay right now for the price of a £1 ticket. Winners will be drawn at the CQN Open on Friday night. There will be further raffles and auctions on Friday night with some excellent golfing and other sporting activities been donated by the Celtic family. Perhaps the pick is a limited edition canvas print of John Thomson, donated by the John Thomson Memorial Committee. There are only 22 of these in the entire world, representing the 22 years of John’s life.

This is a unique opportunity to win three great pieces of Celtic memorabilia, items which would normally be pushed out of the reach of most people at auction. Tickets cost £1, buy as many as you like, but participate. This is what your club is all about!

But what if, as another poster supposes, we’ve got guys lined up in both those positions who are sitting on their hands waiting to see if we get through to the group stages before signing?

    Seems highly plausible…

There are many players out there who would play for us without euro football, we would pay them more money than most other clubs would, players will go where the money is.

Very few players get the chance to play euro football, even less get the chance to win medals.

The msm myth that players won’t want to come to the spl is just that, a myth.

There are hundreds of freebies out there who would jump at the chance to play for Celtic, don’t believe the msm hype.

Went to the well game tonight, they played well, well! Made a few chances but were poor at the back. Jamie Murphy was a standout as was Panathanikos number 3.

“no Huns in Europe” belted out, panathanikos supporters decked out with Celtic flags and tops.

Grumpy guy sitting next to me a doom and gloom merchant, “gonna be hard for us with no Huns comin” I said “there’s 10 thousand here, that should more than make up for the cheating mobs pound”, “how did u work that out” says he, ” cos if they hadnt had admin and liquidation coming they would be playing Panathanikos tonight”. “oh aye!”

Good atmosphere at the game, but can’t wait for tomorrow.

Couple of points based on a complete lack of detail.

    What about the highlights contract?

The BBC show of recent memory is probably up there with One O’clock show as Scottish TV at its worst. Consequently any news on the contract – money / length of highlights / stopping an Ex Motherwell captain hogging the analysts chair …

Where is ESPN in all of this?

Does the new contract include their numbers / payments?

No matter the numbers of the new contract / set of contracts BT has slipped up. Talking out Sky would have been a great second act to their cheeky wee wind up at the EPL auction. At some point the BT exec level will work out that they need a product / software / content angle to make the most of their hardware / distribution / infrastructure strengths.

They need to throw off their Maggie imposed shackles and get busy with the opportunities out there in data / info / knowledge land. Living off the reflected glory of a couple of EA inspired patents is not enough.

That is my lot with freebie analysis on BT’s future.

If they want more they will need to get busy putting PL out to some non exec grass.

  7. £13million per season eh? Peanuts.Reckon it won’t mean much more than the paltry £1.2million per season that Celtic get from the present TV deal.

Ladbrokes are in negotiations to purchase Dermot Desmond’s Betdaq betting exchange – Suppose that won’t make any difference to Celtic though.

    YaCan’tTakeItWithYeDermotCSC

As I understand PLC rules mean he can’t give it to celtic either unless it’s by way of more share issues. Direct donations aren’t allowed. Neither is bankrolling a player from funds outside the club.

happy to be corrected on this by the way :)

Kingoh – I’m gobsmacked that someone from the club didn’t advise TKF of the decision to scrap the £50 season tickets, especially when you decided to increase your numbers!

I would let Sannabhoy loose on them, as they will probably back down in the face of such pragmatism….!

  11. Chomrades,

    Copy of my email to SkySports tonight;

    Sirs

I’m a SkySports subscriber (suspended in the football off season!).

Im somewhat lost about SkySports News reporting of the current Scottish Football League developments.

Apparently, a company known as Sevco 5088 or Sevco Scotland have applied for the transfer of Rangers FC’s membership in the SFA.

Apparently, Rangers FC are currently in administration and will be liquidated.

As Sevco 5088/Sevco Scotland await the decision on the transfer of Rangers FC’s share, Rangers FC today (31.07.12) changed their name to The Rangers FC.

SkySports have tonight (31.07.12) reported this name change on its scrolling news banners.

Immediately after the story re the name change of Rangers FC to The Rangers FC, it is then reported by SkySports News that “Rangers” have signed a player and offered a contract to another.

SkySports News also reports that they will be showing “Rangers” game against Peterhead.

Surely these are basic editorial mistakes and serve only to exacerbate the already confused and innacurately reported position by minor media outlets .

“Rangers” did not play Brechin last weekend. “Rangers” game against Peterhead is not being shown live on Sky.

Apparently, The Rangers is a brand new club.

Will SkySports seek to accurately reflect the changes in Scottish Football? If not, I am afraid that I cannot continue to financially contribute to your coverage of Scottish Football if said coverage effectively supports the erroneous arguments by misinformed parties that The Rangers or Sevco is the same entity as the soon to be liquidated Rangers FC.

I believe my views reflect those of a significant number of SkySports subscribers who support other Scottish clubs (please note the 35 of 41 clubs who opposed Sevco’s direct admission to the SPL or SFL1) which have played by the financial rules, played taxes and lived within their means.

It is inaccurate and offensive to fans of well run clubs for SkySports to support the fallacy that the same team as finished runners up in last years SPL is the same as that which played Brechin last week.

The overwhelming majority of Scottish Football fans have rejected the actions of Rangers FC. Rangers FC did not operate within their means and failed to pay due tax and VAT. They are under investigation for alleged illegal tax avoidance over many years. This may result in the stripping of trophies and reallocation of honours to tax compliant clubs, albeit said clubs may have lost significant potential income.

I and other fans of Scottish Football should not have to point out the obvious to SkySports. we simply request accuracy and balance. In the absence of either, I shall be cancelling my subscription.

    Regards

  12. TTTT

We renewed prior to the increase so it didn’t affect us for this season. The £50 has been scrapped for new tickets this season as of now, I believe.

I’ll keep the Rottweiler known as sannabhoy in his cage for now until we see how this pans out!!

  13. I wish I could cancel Sky Sports

I could subscribe again and cancel again I suppose :>)

They did give me 3 months free gratis, even called me and asked me to reconsider my cancelation after the 3 months were up, it must be biting with them, cancel Sky bhoys, you know it makes sence….

  16. TET @ 23.45

If you want people to come to the club then you need to make an example of someone. That is show the positives of playing in the East End of Glasgow.

It may hurt us in the short term but it will help us in the long term.

We need to show the world that we are a stepping stone to big money.

This wil upset the guys who remember 66 – 74 but those days have gone.

We need an income stream from player development.

Currently we are working with fools gold.

High wage but low cost players.

JL is the marker in all of this.

    Low cost but high wage.

What is he now – improving asset or a hard to move journeyman?

We cannot afford to pay £22K + pw to a half finished 22/23 yr old.

That is where we started out and really where are we now?

  17. On season tickets the fans will need to take the hit this season if they were not able to buy tickets before Dundee were invited to join the SPL.

Next seson the Club needs to buy the goodwill of the fans by reducing all season ticket prices. Kids tickets at £50 is great but too cheap. Kids tickets at £120 are far too expensive. Middle ground of £75-80 would be ideal.

In 1994/95 when Fergus took us to Hampden he enticed fans to buy season ticket for a bargain £160. Upto this point season ticket numbers at Celtic Park totalled only a few thousand for the Hampden season it went up to 18,000.

When we went back to the new Celtic Park interest in season tickets had increased and Fergus was more or less able to sell out Celtic Park every week.

Celtic need to look at this model and try and copy it for next season in order to keep the faith of the current STH’s as well as generating a new wave of support.

This reduction in season tickets could be off set by reducing the first team squad to 18 players which would be well supported by the best youth system in the land.

Anyway first things first big game tomorrow, hope everyone is going.

  18. MadMitch

Signing any player is a gamble, be it a player with prospects, or a proven journeyman.

We have done ok with a few, the likes of Ki, Wanyamma, Kayal, Izzy will go for much more than was laid out.

We have also done not so good with a few,but thems the chance you take when you are in the market we are.

The kids we are bringing through seem to be half decent, some will make it, many won’t, again it’s a gamble.

I know there are proven players out there who will play for us, no fee, and probably will play for 12-16k a week, yer man Fojut was on about 4k a week in Poland I understand, I don’t imagine we were offering anything like 20k a week, they are out there, JP is paid handsomely to find them.

  19. TET

You’re talking about us signing players and giving them contracts in the region of 12-16 grand a week mate.

I heard from a reliable source the money that two Celtic players were on. One has recently been sold and the other is still at Parkhead.

12-16 grand a week is several times what these guys are/were on. We don’t live in that world anymore in my opinion and that greatly restricts our options when offering contracts to new propositions.

  20. HT

I am talking about signing a couple of players, the players Lenny wants.

Loovens was on about 12k, Dan about the same, could have even been more, we have got off the books about 10 players, let’s say the average was 5k, that will well pay for what Lenny wants.

I’m not advocating spending what we don’t have.

  21. @ The Exiled Tim

First off, I completely back you in saying that as a contributor to the club you are, and should, be allowed to voice you opinion of the people running it.

That said, I do find the simplistic view that every decision made inside Parkhead is somehow only down to Peter Lawell to be a tad, well, simplistic.

As someone who agrees with you that we need a CH and a CF, I disagree that we’re in a position to go and buy one right now. The list of names you rolled out should be reason enough to accept that “speculate to accumulate” is simply not going to happen again in our life time.

PW has backed Lennon in the buying of Bangura and Murphy to the tune of £3.7m + wages, and currently has 6 first team strikers all on a might fine wage – all vying for (at most) 2 positions. While I absolutely agree that we need a new striker, we must sell at least 2 before we can bring another in – and frankly we can’t give them away!

The same goes for the defence I’m afraid. The manager has brought in 3 CH’s in the last 22 months. In my opinion neither K.Wilson nor Daniel.M were/are good enough, but aside from that… We have 5 first team CH on our books: Wilson, Mulgrew, Lustig, Rogne & Thompson (additionally Wanyama can play there). To buy a 6th Centre half without off-loading some of the current squad would be financially stupid.

I know that doesn’t sit well with many; but the sad reality is that the days of wheeling and dealing and “off-loading” players is gone. There is a reason that most of the clubs in the SPL are only handing out 18month contracts – because there is nowhere to sell players on to if they don’t cut it in the SPL. (/wave Darryl Murphy, Darren O’Dea, Loovens, Marc Wilson etc). Like Rasmussen, we’re PAYING people to leave.

We have to be realistic about our spending:

    2005-06: £9.9m

    2006-07: £14.8m

    2007-08: £4.3m

    2008-09: £7.5m

    2009-10: £7.4m

    2010-11: £9.8m

    2011-12: £2.9m

    2012-13: £2m (so far)

Neil has already spent £14.7m assembling this current squad: With 3 of his first 11 free transfers and 3 already at the club!! Thats not a great Return on Investment.

With no-one to compete against for the league, something I predict we’ll have sown up by End of February, there is no need to invest in the squad to retain the SPL title. That only leaves Europe as a challenge – and there is no point spending Xmillion + wages on 2 players if we’re not going to make it.

More importantly though, and the bit that most people struggle to believe is that playing in the SPL on, comparatively, poor wages is of no interest to most players of a level that we want to sign.

As fans we believe that we pay good wages. We don’t. Celtic pay OK wages in comparison to some of the Championship, unless you’re coming in at the top of our bracket, and really – why would you? For the thrill of 2 away games Ross County? As a stepping stone to the EPL? Nonsense. We’ve only sold 3 players to the EPL in the last 15 years (4 if you count that Maloney went twice) !

Less wages, less chance at moving upwards, no competition to improve against, less coverage – it aint happening big man.

There’s a reason we’ve got Kelvin Wilson and not Matt Mills.

There’s a reason we’ve got Banguara and not Jordan Rhodes.

We need to be realistic about the horrible market we’re in, thanks to the SPL, and understand that speculate to accumulate only works if you can bankroll your mistakes; and not only can we not do so, we wont be able to do so while in the SPL.

  22. TET

The two players I’m referring to weren’t even on £5k per week.

I’m as desperate for new players as any Tim, a centre half and striker preferably, but I’m acutely aware of the belt tightening that may need to be done, this season especially, in light of recent events.

I think there’s much less money available than people think mate.

  23. TET @ 00.17

I think we are talking about a range of players consequently my thoughts are we are working three different strands of options –

Bosmans / Journeymen – Low cost / signing fee only but high wage / high maintenance.

    Prospects – £1-2mill / young’ish / low wage.

They have shown a lot of promise, they can start but they need work.

Punts – £shrapnel / young / faily high wage for teenagers – why else would they sign for us.

Non staters / raw but capable with work.

We have worked these angles since MON was chased out the door.

Big issues for me is that we have the attitudes of the French army, always trying to win the next war with the lessons learned from the last. Consequently our success rate has been poor although we have improved of late. However the overhang of deadwood has been very costly both in wasted wages and lost investment.

Our Polish ex friend Pojut will have a story to tell.

    What wages did we offer?

I fear PL was talked up well beyond the £8K pw he deserved.

    Biggest issue is stagnation.

We have been in slow motion over the summer.

Too many people are more interested in the decline of the TFOD than organic internal growth closer to home.

No CL group stages and we are a £40mill club in a good year.

    PL take a bow.

  24. Dean Shiels 4 year contract. Ian Black who cares how long. Craig Beattie???? Tap aff hun if i remember correctly. Names to conjure with. Greene wants Fatboy there for 25 years! What’s not to like?

Howevah, redtops full of crap about our `friendly’ record. Keevins still on about Armageddon. Huncallers `certain’ they will be back in a year with a restructure. Same old, same old.

So how badly was Doncaster out? How many million and how many years of a deal did he do the SPL out of with his scaremongering? Made the TV companies job a far easier one IMO. Fuddite Doncasterous (a man who doesn’t know his time was up long ago!)
