The kind of Armageddon that buys you a meal, takes you to a show & onto a nightclub

738

As far as Armageddons go, this one will surely be known as the Amiable Nursemaid of all Armageddons.  The kind that not so much wipes everyone out, but buys them a meal, then takes them to a show and onto a nightclub.

Sky has renewed their deal to cover the Scottish Premier League after Our Man sorted them out yesterday.  They will show a handful of Scottish Football League games as part of the deal, a nice quid-pro-quo for SPL clubs for their annual contribution to the lower leagues.

Delicious irony: those SFL rights are worth more to each SPL club than they are to any SFL club.

Chief harbinger of doom, Neil Doncaster, will, on the one hand, be relieved that there is still income to pay his wages.  On the other hand, he must surely be embarrassed at the spectacularly in accurate scenario he portrayed to SFL clubs, and to several people in the media.  Did he embark on a flamboyant bluff or did he simply not know what he was talking about?

Remember, why we are here in the first place… Our good causes this year are The Haven Centre in Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents’ Association.

We have already distributed over £2000 thanks to the sale of a Joseph Gormley painting back in April. We have two further fantastic paintings by Joseph; one of Scott Brown and one of Henrik Larsson. We also have a wonderful signed Neil Lennon print by the artist Gary Brandham.

The items are being raffled on ebay right now for the price of a £1 ticket. Winners will be drawn at the CQN Open on Friday night. There will be further raffles and auctions on Friday night with some excellent golfing and other sporting activities been donated by the Celtic family. Perhaps the pick is a limited edition canvas print of John Thomson, donated by the John Thomson Memorial Committee. There are only 22 of these in the entire world, representing the 22 years of John’s life.

This is a unique opportunity to win three great pieces of Celtic memorabilia, items which would normally be pushed out of the reach of most people at auction. Tickets cost £1, buy as many as you like, but participate. This is what your club is all about!

Went to a wedding in The Piper Centre several years ago. A great venue and a great night.

“Neil has already spent £14.7m assembling this current squad: With 3 of his first 11 free transfers and 3 already at the club!! Thats not a great Return on Investment.”

It’s a wee bit disingenuous to just list the incoming spending gone wrong. Against that we have to list the investments that could be sold profitably:-

Wanyama, Forrest, Izzaguire, Ki, Kayal & Hooper- all in the £4m to £10m+ range

Forster, Brown, Matthews, Ledley & Samaras in the £2m-£5m bracket

Stokes, Commons, Rogne, Mulgrew & Lustig in the £1m-£2m range

plus Under a million for Bangura, Watt, McGeoch, Twardzik, and McCourt

plus loose change for Murphy and Kelvin Wilson, comparable to the Rasmussen fee,

and you have a fair return on investment.

Now, not all of those are at peak selling time. Nor would you want to sell them all at once. And, I realise Neil did not source all of this talent.

But, if we are going to throw up his failures, we need to acknowledge that we now have several candidates who can give us the type of money that Stan & Aiden fetched so we could be credited as rich in player assets thanks to our manager and staff.

    Your analysis is one dimensional.

What about the money brought in by sales?

What about the squad wage levels?

Regarding Championship wages – I have to disagree, you are havering.

We pay on average better than any team in that division can pay.

The only thing your viewpoint develops is a tendency to pay over the odds regarding Championship targets and second string Euro Bosmans.

  4. HT – cheers. But was it cheap or on the slightly inflated side? I work round the corner and have envisaged nipping tae the TSB (or McConnells) for a cheeky wee pint if it’s steep! ;-)

I am talking about signing a couple of players, the players Lenny wants.

Loovens was on about 12k, Dan about the same, could have even been more, we have got off the books about 10 players, let’s say the average was 5k, that will well pay for what Lenny wants.

I’m not advocating spending what we don’t have.

Ah, but you are advocating that, although unknowingly. We already spent that money on players last year. Last year we were operating on a “what we have” + “what we need” basis. Those players leaving has brought us (almost) back to “what we have”. We’re still above it.

Losing Marc Wilson, Cha Duri, Darren O’Dea et.al doesn’t make up for Bangura and Murphy.

    Kelvin Wilson

    Ibrahim

    Adam Matthews

    Victor Wanyama

    Fraser Forster

    Mohamed Bangura

    Mikael Lustig

    Joe Ledley

    Daryl Murphy

    Efrain Juarez

    Gary Hooper

    Beram Kayal

    Daniel Majstorovic

    Emilio Izaguirre

    Anthony Stokes

    Fredrik Ljungberg

    Kris Commons

    Cha Du-Ri

    Charlie Mulgrew

    Pawel Brozek (loan)

    El Kadouri (loan)

Lennon has brought in 19 players in 2 seasons (+2 loan signings), and his current first team squad boasts 9 players he inherited, and 8 youth players he’s promoted.

The money you’re talking about is already spent. It was used to secure Lustig, El Kadouri and Brozek (*shudder*). It was used to pay large signing on fees for K.Wilson, Ledley, Matthews. We were already covering O’Dea, Rasmussen, M.Wilson, J.Thompson, Hooiveld, Maloney, McGinn (actually half of Swindon) etc. They money you’re talking about? we were already spending it. These players leaving us is only bringing us back to “What we can afford”.

There is no more to spend because these players are off the wage bill. Them being on the wage bill at the same time as Neil signed 19 players +2 loan signings WAS him being backed by the board. We’re simply not in a position to stretch ourselves that thin again – not in this financial climate (£1.2m a year from TV)…

£13million per season eh? Peanuts.Reckon it won’t mean much more than the paltry £1.2million per season that Celtic get from the present TV deal.

As I understand PLC rules mean he can’t give it to celtic either unless it’s by way of more share issues. Direct donations aren’t allowed. Neither is bankrolling a player from funds outside the club.

I see where your coming from re transfers, but, I would rather we waited for ”proven quality’ rather than our recent signings.

Although we have found some gems e.g. Wanyama , Matthews, for every good signing there are at least three or four who are a waste of cash , or who contribute zilch – browek , Bangura , Blackman , etc all took wages off us last season but, contributed ZERO .

It would be interesting to find out the economics of 3/4 maybes at a small transfer fee and £3/4/5/6 k peg week versus , a bit of quality at £30k on a 9 month deal

I would rather we waited till EPL teams announce their 25 Squad and negotiate a bit of quality on a 4 month deal till Xmas , than some of the guys above

  8. THE EXILED TIM on 1 August, 2012 at 00:17 said:

Unfortunately the players we might consider paying £15k/week to can get double that and more.

I used to believe that Euro football might be a lure but I just don’t think it is. If we were to get into the CL group stages we play a top team twice, a middle to good team twice and (hopefully) a weaker team twice.

If you sign for a middling EPL team you’ve got 4/5 top teams, 6-8 middle teams and then the relegation battlers. And it’s the highest profile league in the world if you’re looking to find a big club.

Put it this way – do you think Steven Fletcher would be looking at a £10M+ move if he’d been up here? I seriously doubt it.

I wan’t meaning the figure as anything overly critical of the manager; but in my opinion £14.7m on 19 players (and 2 loan signings) in 2 years with our success rate isn’t great. But we’re leanring, and hopefully the RoI will be more positive this year – I believe it will :)

Look, I’m not talking about making money from wheeling and dealing players, I’m ok for us not doing that. I’m not saying we have to make a profit to have an RoI.

But since the 2009-10 season we’ve spent more on transfers than every other football club in Scotland put together :including “Rangers(IA)”; and for that we’ve won the Scottish Cup once and the SPL once, bringing in 21 signings in the process.

We can’t continue to throw money at the squad in the hope it makes it into Europe. If it does – awesome. If it doesn’t – we’re back to a very precarious finacial position.

  18. Spiers on Sport: why there’s real unease around Celtic

    Graham Spiers. The Herald

No wonder there is anxiety behind the scenes at Celtic.

In happier times: Neil Lennon celebrates This is supposed to be a time when all the despair belongs to Rangers, but any time you are near Celtic Park these days you can sense an unease around the place.

On Wednesday night, Celtic face HJK Helsinki in Glasgow in a third qualifying round for the Champions League, and anything other than a successful route to the play-offs for that competition will trigger further tension. In this, of all seasons, Celtic need Champions League football.

You have to whisper this at times, because some Celtic supporters are indignant at the suggestion, but Rangers’ demise is sorely felt by the corporate Celtic.

The very spice of Neil Lennon’s job is in taking on his Old Firm rivals for the SPL title, and Lennon is on record as saying he loves going to Ibrox. But all that is gone for him with Rangers’ exile to the Irn-Bru third division.

Celtic supporters like to crow that, while they are contemplating Europe’s big guns on the field, Rangers’ agenda is now all about Brechin City, East Stirlingshire and trips to Annan.

Well, that’s not how Lennon views it. The Celtic manager, while acknowledging that Rangers deserve their punishment, doesn’t find his job half as exciting without them.

Nor is it just Ibrox crowds that will be very telling in the weeks and months ahead. How will the wider Celtic faithful respond to the possibility of a one-horse title race, let alone, heaven forbid, a season without any Champions League football?

My bet is this: there will be many a Celtic fan who, having revelled in Rangers’ disintegration, suddenly finds the season ahead a lot less enticing.

The afternoon of Saturday July 28 at Parkhead was a case in point. An unimpressive 20,000 turned up to watch what was justifiably billed as a “glamour” pre-season friendly between Celtic and Internazionale. Notwithstanding that we live in an age of austerity, when supporters are counting their money, there was a hint here of apathy surrounding Celtic.

The club itself, as it had to, publicly brushed aside any suggestion of disappointment at this attendance, but it would have been noted with mild apprehension.

Peter Lawwell, the Celtic CEO, will certainly be feeling the heat these days. Lawwell cannot escape the fact that Celtic’s relationship with Rangers, as terse as it can be, is box-office. With the Old Firm now temporarily divorced, the Celtic chief-executive somehow has to find ways of spicing up the menu for his club’s supporters.

How many season-tickets will Celtic sell this season? The club is cagey about that, too. The appetite of 10 years ago, when 54,000 season-tickets would be sold during the Martin O’Neill era, seems long gone.

In recent seasons that figure has dipped sharply, and the worry for Celtic now is that the psychological barrier of 40,000-plus season-books will not be reached. If or when that ever happens, the alarm bells will be jangling.

Lawwell has already betrayed signs of the gathering mood. In sending out his “begging letter” to Celtic supporters recently to snap up season-tickets, he duly hinted at a slower than usual uptake. “We need you back at Celtic Park,” Lawwell told his fan-base bluntly.

In the same letter he aimed a barb at ‘newco’ Rangers when he spoke about Celtic’s “125 unbroken years” of history. In truth, the Celtic chief should probably leave that sort of stuff to the stands and the message-boards.

Celtic should sweep aside HJK Helsinki over 180 minutes. The Glasgow club is 10 times the size of their opponents, with a far superior budget.

Yet all this only increases the pressure on Lennon and Lawwell to hold firm and deliver their club to the Champions League group-stage. The Europa League – the lesser, uglier sibling to the Champions League – is poor consolation.

In terms of crowing and bragging this has been a momentous summer for Celtic supporters. Given Rangers’ severe discomfort, for many of them life could scarcely seem better.

The more discerning Celtic supporter, however, may be wary of the weeks and months ahead.

  19. The Sun ROBERT GRIEVE

I’m not here to win pals, I’m here to help save the game

STEWART REGAN’S conscience is completely clear.

Swamped by accusations of incompetence, the SFA chief could easily find himself staring at his bedroom ceiling night after night.

But he insists he sleeps easy.

With serious threats made against his life Regan could be forgiven for waking up in the early hours of the morning.

    But he doesn’t stir.

Regan, 48, knows he’ll never win any Man of the Year contest while he’s in the job he’s in.

Rangers fans targeted him in their win at Brechin last Sunday, blaming him for their side’s demotion to the Third Division.

But Regan rapped: “I can sleep at night knowing all I’ve ever done has been for the good of the game in Scotland.

“I am confident in my own ability, the SFA board are confident in my ability, and there is always going to be a small minority trying to knock you down.

“My challenge is to rise above that, to remain focused on the job in hand and try and deliver on our aims as quickly as possible.

“I am not here to win popularity contests. Football isn’t about popularity.

“I’ll continue to do what I need to do, if I upset people along the way I know that’s part and parcel of the job.

“I’m committed to the challenge I set out to see through when I came to Scotland.

“I have come an awful long way in implementing those challenges and improvements to Sco-ttish football. I’m determined to see it through. Anyone can take the helm when the sea is calm.

“That is the situation in Scottish football. We have gone through a rocky period and now it’s time to move on to the next stage.”

Gers fans believe Regan is tight with Peter Lawwell and the Celtic chief was behind his appointment at Hampden.

But Regan insists: “That’s complete fiction. I met Peter Lawwell once before I came to Scottish football.

“I have no knowledge of Paul Nolan’s brother or John Reid’s mate. It’s a load of tripe.”

But Regan still stands accused of being pro-Celtic.

He added: “Well, I think you only have to look back at my record since I arrived.

“I’ve got a job to do in Scottish football and I’ve set about doing it.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m here to drive the game forward.

“Petty comments and small-minded behaviour doesn’t interest me. I’m concerned with the future and people can perceive what they wish.

“I can go to bed and sleep at night knowing all I’ve ever done has been for the good of the game in Scotland.

“At the moment I’m perceived negatively by Old Firm fans and, after a leaked email, I’m perceived to be acting against the best interests of the game.

“Far from it, I’ve set out to drive change in this country and I will continue to do that.”

That leaked email sent to senior SFA figure Rod Petrie heaped more pressure on Regan.

The message detailed discussions that had taken place with a view to parachuting Rangers into the First Division.

That brought fierce criticism from the likes of Dunfermline chairman John Yorkston.

But Regan insists he wasn’t guilty of any wrongdoing. He said: “I have been vilified for trying to be a marriage broker or a peace keeper. Let me take you through the timeline from when we put the proposal together.

“On June 18, we had a presentation in the boardroom featuring all the key parties — the SFA, SFL, SPL and the lawyers.

“That moved on to a conference call on June 22 which was summarised by myself in a set of notes which went out on June 23.

“There was nothing in that email which was secret in any way.

“The fact it became a leaked email was quite surprising, because there was nothing in there the governing bodies didn’t know about.

“Rangers were fully aware of the discussions.

“Charles Green and Ally McCoist sat in the boardroom and agreed the plan for Rangers to be part of the First Division.

“It was presented as being in the best interests of the game, from both a financial and a sporting sanctions perspective.

“Therefore, it was nothing that people around the table felt was negative, emotional or should not have been discussed.

“As the governing body, we were there to try and put a plan together for the best interests of the game and that’s what we were doing.”

But what about Regan’s claim Scottish football would suffer ‘a slow lingering death’ if Gers were demoted to the Third Division?

Wasn’t that bullying tactics aimed at scaring SFL clubs?

Regan responded: “I think we tried to be marriage brokers.

“We sat down with the SPL and the SFL and their key directors were part of that team.

“On June 22 when we had the conference call — which was subsequently leaked — there was an end point reached when we thought we had the best plan possible from both a commercial angle and that of sporting sanctions.

“In the dialogue which ensued there were many influential factors.

“Club chairmen came under pressure from their fans.

“There was a desire to sell season tickets and there was a concern Rangers had to be dealt with in a way that recognised the seriousness of some of the challenges which had gone before.

“All we ever tried to do was act in the best interests of the game, but the other clubs decided otherwise.

“Comments have been made since, but we’ve got to rise above that and do what we think is right.”

  20. Spiers usually crap

To take a lead from RTC, the most urgent matters outstanding are the result from the FTT and the SPL investigation into the illegal registration of players

Hopefully, nothing will influence the outcome of the FTT. That body will deliver a verdict on David Murray’s business morality. The verdict on his business ability has already been delivered, and he now sits on the same shelf as Gerald Ratner, Robert Maxwell and Asil Nadir.

The SPL enquiry will sit shortly and it has already stated there is a Prima Facie case to answer. I have no doubt, none whatsoever, not even a trillionth of a percent , that Rangers are as guilty as sin in regards to this case. Mark Daly in his documentary confirmed that he had seen multiple examples of side letters. RTC has also attested to evidence in this regard.

When the guilty verdict is delivered by the SPL, as it must be, I hope they ask themselves 2 questions when handing down the punishment.

1 If Peterhead play half a dozen players who are illegally registered against The Rangers at the weekend what action will be taken against them by the League

2 If Falkirk play an entire team who are illegally registered against The Rangers in the Ramsdens Cup, will they be allowed to retain a Victory should they achieve it

The SPL, and the appeal body the SFA , would be opening a Pandora’s box if they fail to take the appropriate action. Lets not forget that Rangers under David Murray, if found guilty of illegal registration, not only cheated clubs in the SPL out of trophies and European places, they defrauded them of very significant sums of money. More than £80 million over the period of this deception.

The very least, and i use that advisedly , that should happen is that titles will be stripped. We are already seeing a downplaying of importance in this regard by “reasonable” commentators like Graham Spiers, and an outrage at the very thought by the less than reasonable, led by McCoist.

To put into perspective the language that the media use , in this case Keith Jackson of the Daily Record, I would like to quote from his article of September 30th 2009. This was on the occasion his favourite football team were thumped 0-4 by Seville, and the referee missed an admittedly obvious penalty for Rangers.

1 As stonewallers go this one could have kept Genghis Khan and his Mongols out of Peking. So big, so blatant and so obvious it could have been spotted by a man on the moon.

Sadly for Rangers, however, there was one rocket of a man who couldn’t quite make it out from all of 15 yards away and after this act of astonishing ineptitude, Scotland’s champions would go on to crash and burn quite spectacularly in the rarefied atmosphere of the Champions League.

2 Done in by a dodgy Eriksson. Swedish official Jonas Eriksson to be precise.

3 You really had to feel for Walter Smith and his players. This time they really had a case. These players were left utterly bemused by the failure of one of UEFA’s leading whistlers to do his job and point to the penalty spot the moment Abdoulay Konko whipped the legs from under Steven Naismith.

4 Everyone could see it. Konko was as guilty as sin. But, quite incredibly, Eriksson choked and balked his responsibilities in jaw-dropping fashion.

5 Naismith thumped his fists off the rainsodden turf and let out a cry of disbelief. McCulloch ran at Eriksson pleading with him to do the right thing but it was over. Gone.

6 But this time these players don’t just have themselves to blame. They can thank Eriksson for his part in their unseemly demise.

Now you can feel his pain, you can sense the anger that jumps out in every single word of this article. I wonder, well actually I don’t really , will we see such prose to describe the 12 years of corrupted competition when Murray cheated and defrauded Scottish Football.

Will there be an outpouring of bile about Dodgy Dave in the way he was so quick to label the Swedish referee a Dodgy Eriksson. Has Spiers or any of the other had wringers ever thought for a second what was entailed in illegally registering 50 + players. It wasn’t just an oversight , it was a concerted effort to defraud the sport, the clubs and the paying public.

Will we see the great administrator being accused of being a Rocket, because he claimed to be looking in the other direction when over 100 contracts were deposited with the SPL which were a masterclass in deception. Will be see him accused of choking and balking his responsibilities ?

I take your point, however,Celtic have travelled to Oz twice in the last four years.

    Canada,I`m not sure of.

That’s not my point , u don’t expect them to travel here and to be honest not big fan of players travelling all round world for pre season.

Point is when money is short there’s a lot of exarch goers living far away who I’m sure would contribute financially if There was a scheme/membership in place. Could be a lot of money Celtic is missing out on.

  24. Dougiegate wouldn’t have happened without CQN, The Rangers would be looking forward to their first ever SPL game this weekend without RTC. Citizen journalism will ensure that the honest journalists amongst the mainstream media are not alone in trying to uphold the code of ethics employed by the society of professional Journalists ( http://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp )

I will quote just a few guidelines, the rest are on the link

    Seek Truth and Report It

Journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

    Journalists should:

    — Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate distortion is never permissible.

    — Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources’ reliability.

    — Always question sources’ motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises.

    — Examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others.

    — Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.

    — Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.

    — Recognize a special obligation to ensure that the public’s business is conducted in the open and that government records are open to inspection.

Now if Traynor , Jackson, King , Young and the rest of their gang held any regard for a code of ethics at all, RTC would have been redundant. We cant trust them conduct their trade honestly or ethically. Thats why we all have some work to do yet.

The day that I see a journalist doggedly pursuing Souness about why he received multiple EBT loans and ditto for Walter Smith, is the day i will believe we have a mainstream media we can trust.

Until then, none of you are dismissed. Stand by your post, you are all expected to report for further duty.

An interesting read mate and glad you clarified Lenny had added value to the squad on your subsequent posts.

There will always be an element of taking a punt when signing players….even players with mighty reputations can come back to haunt the best managers

Who thinks Bangura will nod a whipped cross (from messrs Izzy, Charlie,or Matty) into the net in the dying minutes of CL game to ensure last 16 this season? ….or Murphy ….or Hoops or Stokesy or Sammi ?

but one of the CH’s might..so there is hope

One of the routes to success for some of the finest footballing teams we have had at CP for decades is currently blocked off …we are not about to start playing Spanish style one touch interplay fitba with no target man striker anytime soon …

I feel we are ok …just ok …at the back for the time being and no more money should be spent there until we get a heid the ba’ in the net striker

as someone said recently we need someone who can pick the killer pass from mid and that is a concern too …Ki can make it happen in European games and every other midfielder has demonstrated ability to make the killer pass now and again,so again, there is hope there too ..

however. for me there is a glaring hole in our squad and I’m not going to get into who is signing or not signing players….I just see that big gap in the team foto. It cost us last season and it will cost us again this season

Other than that things are just dandy and I am looking forward to getting along to Paradise tonight to cheer on our highly talented young squad and enjoy Lenny chalking up some more crucial hours of experience managing on the stage where he is surely destined for greatness

Spiers on Sport: why there’s real unease around Celtic

    ——–

What makes me especially angry about this man is how many, including some Celtic fans, hold him up as some of beacon of neutrality and reason.

Some get all excited when he slags off the huns when all he ever tries to do in respect of thems is to attempt to restore a little sanity within the ranks of the mad rants of their bigoted fan base and managerial team. That thems hate him sums up their distorted view of the world

In respect of Celtic, he is unremittingly negative as this article demonstrates. If the ‘the rankers’ were playing for a place in the champions league, he would be bigging up the game and the team. Instead, he talks about Celtic’s diminishing support (no evidence provided), how much we are all missing thems and, effectively saying that, if we dont qualify for the Champions League, it’s all over for us.

A plank of a man. A hun apologist whose most positive quality is that he is not completely unhinged. Is that the best we can hope for in sad, little, bigoted Scotland?

    Get out now, Celtic!

I do believe he is anti Celtic and very much pro a soon to be liquidated team with a 100% winning record.

  32. Late night rambling thoughts somehow brought me to think about Joe Jordan.

We haven’t replaced Thommo as far as I know, and, you know where I’m going.

Jordan is no longer at Spurs.

I don’t believe our players are as fit as they should or could be.

Jordan has loads of top level experience working with expensive and temperamental (or maybe just mental) players.

So? must I state the obvious?

He’d be an instant hero after his confrontation with Gattuso.

“Charles Green and Ally McCoist sat in the boardroom and agreed the plan for Rangers to be part of the First Division.

I see Kit posted a piece from Britney! MSM message No1 on how massive a financial impact on Celtic the fact that Sevco are missing from the SPL, also we are getting main mesage No.2 that Sevco have been punished enough, radio Snyde had Davie Hay on MSM message last night with the emphasis on this was an ex Celtic manager telling it as it is, the MSM is willing to ruin Scottish football in its fight for survival with the new media, there will be continuing stories about financial hardships at Celtic and other SPL clubs this season with the only saviour is to restore Sevco ASAP through League reconstruction, the stories emanating from players presently signing with Sevco that they have been promised only one season out of the top flight IMO are true, Regan denying plans are in place in his interview was totally unconvincing, expect Sevco back soon
