The language of defeat, crowd-sourced media management

1075

Speaking at the weekend, Kenny McDowell looked ahead to the cup semi-final saying “We aren’t going into the game fearing a big defeat.  If anything we are going into the game knowing we’ll have to be on our guard and wary of that, but we are not going into it fearing of losing by a big score-line”.

Admitting that he’s wary about the prospect of a big defeat is the last thing you want your manager to say publicly as you prepare for a cup tie.  It conditions everyone to the prospect of defeat.

From Ronny, it’s all positive: “It’s going to be fun.

“It’s good that this is a big game, so we won’t be underestimating the opponent.

“We are in a good position, we can win everything and that motivates.”

Big games, big results, are often won in the head before a team takes to the field.  You win because you know you’re going to win, because you know you can rely on your team-mates.  You know that if you do your job correctly, there is nothing the opposition can do, short of elbowing you in the face and hope you retaliate.

No game of football is easy and Ronny and the players will know they will have to work for anything they get on Sunday, but the preparatory work has been done.  The players are fit, rested and can’t wait for Sunday.

On a side note, I can’t believe how thoroughly the New Club advert has penetrated media coverage this week.  On top of Motivator McDowell, can you imagine ‘ex-players’, pundits and fans having to explain their existence and relevance in the run up to a semi-final?  This wasn’t a crowd-source advert, it was crowd-sourced media management, which ran rings around the best paid PRs in the business.

Let me know (celticquicknews@gmail.com) if you want a ticket to CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March – Cup Final weekend, as it happens, or you can buy a ticket at the bottom of this page.  I’m in the mood now.

    It was that simple.

In my opinion while we prefer to play football – if it’s a man o Mano gig – we have a physically stronger and fitter not mention more experience group

Of players. I don’t mind how we gub them. I’d rather we outplayed them

But if needs be we should nail them early doors if they start their usual carry on. Hearts and Hibs have both outplayed and bullied them. They are weak.

I agree on your scoreline but surely anything less than 3-0 at half time is a bad result???

  6. So we’re now at the point of looking for rumours about rumours!

Running is it? If you ever fancy doing the weekly 5K ParkRun on a Saturday morning at 9.30 (Pollock Park – around 300 runners or Strathclyde about half of that) email me jobobaldie@yahoo.co.uk and I’ll provide any info. Whilst there are some real whippets, the vast majority slog round to complete the course in around 22 – 27 minutes. All shapes and sizes.

  9. One thing for sure on Sunday, they will kick 7 colours of the broon stuff out of us, get in our faces big time in an attempt to get us to lose our cool, as sure as night follows day.

On top of that, Elbows will think this as his last hoorah and will try to go down in hun folk lore as a legend.( more like a leg-end)

We must at all costs, keep the heid. I wouldn’t risk any hot heads playing until the game is beyond their reach. Broonie etc please take note.

I always tell people in my work that between me

and my car pool buddy we have completed > 300 marathons

    (and I dont mean snickers)

Unfortunately the numbers are heavily balanced in his favour.

    Very heavily.

My idea of a marathon is 4 oclock in the pub European game

and back in after the game.

Will Hampden cut up on Saturday during the first semi considering some of the weather we’ve had? When was the pitch laid? Is it properly bedded in?

If it cuts up it stops our passing game, a few industrial challenges from Elbows and Black early doors (unpunished of course) and I wonder how some of our players might react.

Na, forget that, 4-0 to The Hoops!!!

  16. proudbhoy

You are doing about 8.5 mins per mile which is decent considering your training and , ahem admitted bad habits.

The key is regular running which you are doing.

I wouldn’t push too hard at this time to get better times, however, once the weather improves, get out on the road. If you drive it’s easy to measure your distances covered.

Get a mate to run with you too.

I used to think that talking to someone while I was running would have an adverse effect on my performance but it had the opposite effect.

I ran the Glasgow Marathon in 1984 in 3hrs, 44 minutes. The run was at the end of September and and I’d trained since February. I followed a training schedule published by the old Glasgow Herald and I read a great book by marathon runner Jim Fixx. (Now dead, died while out jogging!) But worth a read.

I was 35 at the time.

At the start of my training I was just under 17 stone.

The day after the marathon I was 13 stone.

I did stay off the drink for about 6 weeks before the marathon but still went out with my mates on a Saturday night. I drank ginger beer as it was a could source of carbohydrates.

Anyway good luck with your running and keep us posted.

  17. I think its a cert, that the ref will red card one of our bhoys, prob a penalty as well.

So….lets get at them right from the off

Score 2 or 3 in a quick burst…..then wait for the referee to retaliate.

Go right at them…bully them, they will crumble.

I get all that and like you I cant understand why any Celtic supporter would be against it. Baffling!

Not being involved I had no idea what was contained within the ad. I guess my hope was it would bring clarity & give our media/governance no riggle room to continue the myth. Perhaps my expectations were too high but for me personally, if the myth is allowed to continue. Then I struggle big time to see how our game will ever not be tainted.

Maybe the ad will galvanise supporters of other clubs to get on message but something needs to be done to enforce the narrative, along with the corruption still present within our game.

Aye iv been going regurlay but with so much on these past 8 weeks iv been boozin heavy enough at least 1 day a week which usually means a couple of days off the treadmill.

Even decided to avoid the local csc on sunday and watch it at home so quiet weekend thankfully on the cards and i know that will make heaps of difference.

Thanks for advice. The 7km target will be 36mins

Last time i tested myself was charity run around 6 yrs ago.. 5km in 24mins.

Thats when i was playing football 2/3 times a week along with gym after work.

Struggling to get any enthusiasm for Sunday’s game. Matches against lower league teams are always a no-win situation for any big club.

So long as Celtic win, and I’ll be stunned if that’s not the case, that and the safety of our fans are all that matter on Sunday.

But the idea that Celtic winning by anything less than four or five goals will be considered as failure is quite frankly a load of shite.

Seems I’m in the minority that Sunday’s game will be difficult. Don’t like all this post celebration stuff

Zombies will play 4-5-1 will fight for every ball.Stopping us playing will be there tactic.Need to move ball fast.Park in poor condition won’t help. Nir is going to have to man up, good footballer, but IMO lacks a bit dig.
