The language of defeat, crowd-sourced media management

1075

Speaking at the weekend, Kenny McDowell looked ahead to the cup semi-final saying “We aren’t going into the game fearing a big defeat.  If anything we are going into the game knowing we’ll have to be on our guard and wary of that, but we are not going into it fearing of losing by a big score-line”.

Admitting that he’s wary about the prospect of a big defeat is the last thing you want your manager to say publicly as you prepare for a cup tie.  It conditions everyone to the prospect of defeat.

From Ronny, it’s all positive: “It’s going to be fun.

“It’s good that this is a big game, so we won’t be underestimating the opponent.

“We are in a good position, we can win everything and that motivates.”

Big games, big results, are often won in the head before a team takes to the field.  You win because you know you’re going to win, because you know you can rely on your team-mates.  You know that if you do your job correctly, there is nothing the opposition can do, short of elbowing you in the face and hope you retaliate.

No game of football is easy and Ronny and the players will know they will have to work for anything they get on Sunday, but the preparatory work has been done.  The players are fit, rested and can’t wait for Sunday.

On a side note, I can’t believe how thoroughly the New Club advert has penetrated media coverage this week.  On top of Motivator McDowell, can you imagine ‘ex-players’, pundits and fans having to explain their existence and relevance in the run up to a semi-final?  This wasn’t a crowd-source advert, it was crowd-sourced media management, which ran rings around the best paid PRs in the business.

Let me know (celticquicknews@gmail.com) if you want a ticket to CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March – Cup Final weekend, as it happens, or you can buy a ticket at the bottom of this page.  I’m in the mood now.

    Sure…have yer fun

But be in no doubt….Rangers were Liquidated, and therefore don’t exist…..consequently, there is no old firm.

Sorry to disappoint you…..but you wont be there to see Rangers…..because, they are dead.

The Rio Cinema at Canniesburn Toll: good memories.

Safety came at the Immaculate Conception Church but that was just a brief interlude before you reached the First-and-Last at the bus station (in Celtic Street). The Butney took over for the next mile or so before you continued to Valley country.

    49 was an exceptional year!

I agree injuries take longer to heal at our age, particularly as I am not very fit.

Watching what I eat and drink just now to get my weight down a bit before I hit the roads.

    Really looking forward to it!

BTW, I would be delighted with 12.5 minutes.

Good luck and hope you stay fit!

  5. I honestly think the contest will be over before H/T.

2nd half will see the Hoops turn on a show for the supporters and probably score another 3.

I think we’ll know within 10 minutes to how the game will go on Sunday.

I expect Nir to get a kick or elbow almost immiediately and for them to stick the elbow into our CB’s at every opportunity. If they are allowed to foul with impunity as per usual then the game will be frustrating and close. However if the referee officiates properly and offers our players some protection then we will hammer them 4 or 5.

I agree but the team look more together and settled since they returned from the team bonding break in the Canaries.

I am going for a big win.

  8. Ok – I might be in a minority of 1 here but I don’t give a stuff about the Sevco game.

All I want is to win the treble and for all of our fans to get home safe.

I actually gave my ticket away as I have no interest in giving them any credibility.

What I am REALLY concerned about is the total silence in the transfer market. This game is a dream for Peter Lawwell. Everyone gets to focus on a game against a new club while we sign ……. Nobody.

We need to use this window to prep for the CL qualifiers and we are once again failing to do so. The silence around Armstrong is deafening. The fantasy around £3M refuse for Efe is embarrassing. That is a pure set up so that we can be fed the “we turned down money for our players.”

Let’s not let Sunday blind us from the need to prepare for the top priority. Qualification for next season’s Champions League.

7k is 4.2mls and if you do it under 40 mins that’s under 9.5mins/ ml. A great target for you and when you lose a bit of weight by regular exercise (walking counts) then you’ll defo start improving on that.

Sunday is huge. It’s a semi final and it doesn;t matter who we play it’s a must win.

As for players coming in one thing at a time.

I suspect we will make our moves on deadline day. Unfortunately we are some players 3rd, 4th or 5th choice.

I do agree it’s frustrating though and we should have had our business done early in the window for the CL qualifiers and the remainder of this season but we are where we are.

What do you want us to come out and say exactly? ‘Dundee Utd won’t sell before the cup semi final so on Monday we’re going to fire a few bids in and see if they bite?! Actually we’ve had a few chats with them already and we know what they’re looking for so we’re going to bid a bit less and hope for the best…what are we like eh’

Giving it our all on Sunday will not have a negative effect on CL prospects in 2015/2016.

  15. If we are on song on Sunday and the Huns are on song we will destroy them by at least 5, we are better all over the park, there’s not one hun who would get near our 11 and there’s not one Celtic player who wouldn’t get a start in theres every week, the only thing that could beat us on Sunday is us.

No prediction from me – I have never seen the opposition .Couldn’t recognise most of their team .Glass half full me knows that the better team doesnt always win , especially in cup games where Refs often allow the wee team to get stuck in .

Won’t see the game .I have no desire to legitimate the illegitimate..

    Champions League….don’t think so.

I think Big Peter just likes to talk mince to pacify his followers.

So…He is a bit like Mike Ashley, doesn’t want to talk about anything.

You might get the odd quip now and then….or you will see Big Peter when Celtic fans are being praised in the media…..he likes to milk the warmth that the Celtic fans generate.

    PL is all PR….nothing more.

  22. South of Tunis is the Rio building still there.I’m sure the managers cottage was right across the road.I worked with the gas board .late sixties early seventies.the round toll there had a gas governor.which me and guy called Willie Munn from Cardinals

Worked many times there.and the cottage and the cinema always stuck out.and for you being chased from there to the chapel at the other end of the road.takes some doing.
