The lesson from Arbroath

760

So what did we learn yesterday?  Primarily we learned that you can’t replace 8 players from a team which won 0-4 at Tynecastle while leaving the core element of the team in place.  It is justifiable to be critical of the performances of experienced key players who didn’t perform, but Wanyama, Brown, Matthews, Miku didn’t become bad players overnight, nor did Tony Watt, what happened is the essence of our team – the system – was missing.

The effort was there but the focus which makes this Celtic team wasn’t.  In many ways this was the perfect setup for a Champions League game against a team too many people are telling me we’ll turn over.  Our Christmas Cup Final on Wednesday will require every element that existed against Barcelona last month.

The knives are out for Spartak’s foreign players, who are taking the blame for the clubs disintegration since losing at home to Celtic, both in the press and online fan polls.  We may see a more Russian looking Spartak on Wednesday.  Which will be no bad thing.

There is no manager as defensive in this league as Paw Broon. At home they tried for 0-0 against us and we broke them down and won 2-0.

I don’t think it is quite as cut and dried as some people are saying regarding this Celtic can’t break teams down stuff.

We’ve seen a number of occasions where we haven’t been able to break things down but under Neil we’ve seen multiple games in the last 3 years to say the opposite.

Well though out, well considered, well judged and well said.

Makes a change from knee jerk criticism or hollow sabre-rattling.

  3. Just about every team prefers to play on the counter these days. Not like the old days of the Celtic “storm”.

A forward who could head the ball would be useful for Celtic.

Completely agree on the personal abuse issue. Unew Mike’s post did not merit that response.

However, I do feel that many of the other mineshafter and doomsayer posters are unusually thin-skinned in their tendency to abuse our players, manager and fellow fans, then cry foul and censorship at any disagreement or oppositional view.

The systemic weakness you cite was resolved lat year, was it not? Our inability to beat lesser teams convincingly in the August to October period was put to rights by our long winning run from November to March (Atletico away excepted).

We will not need such a long run of wins this season to give us a comfortable lead because no other SPL side is showing such consistency either. Who, for example, would you confidently bet to finish second this year?

At a push, I would go for Aberdeen but it could just as easily turn out to be United, currently 7th, or Killie (8th) if you believe in their manager’s tactical superiority.

Some senior players might be slightly complacent but I cannot see Neil allowing any conscious expression of that mood, so how do you interfere with subconscious thoughts now that Freud is pretty much discredited? And any hint of senior player complacency should be countered by the eagerness of youthful and fringe players attempting to make their mark and career.

No! Occam’s razor tells me that this is predictable inconsistency from a young, developing team. Just as shown by the pre-66 Lions players (NB- I am not saying this squad is as good).

Imagine if we had sacked Big Jock because he had 4 defeats, 2 draws and 5 wins in his first part-season in charge.

The following year he only had 4 defeats and 3 draws in the whole season where we won our first title since 54.

There are some virtues in patience and consistency. The trick is to determine that you are sticking by a future winner and not a perennial loser.

  5. My take –

I thought most players did well yesterday. We missed chances that would have gone in on another day.

Wanyama strolled the game, but not in a good way – didn’t take it seriously and was far too casual or wasteful. Miku clearly hated the game, and it showed. He was poor. Mcgeouch looked superb on the right, while Watt worked his socks off up front. Rogne and Ambrose looked a very decent partnership.

The biggest fault was Cetic’s lack of killer instinct in attack – taking far too many touches instead of going for goal (Wanyama excepted, but not in a good way).

Too much tippy tappy and no end product – an Ibrahim of a performance.

    TMWTL

    Agreed pal.

I think pace and better movement and delivery are the issues.

  8. TMWTL

Have to disagree with the view that John McGlynn was stupid. He is a good manager in my view.

We have lost to Kenny Sheils Killie a couple of times now. He fields a football playing outfit who are attack minded. We lost to St. Johnstone in Perth and big Tade battered our defence that day. They gave it a go.

I don’t buy Kojo’s theory that we lose to the counter attackers and defense minded. We lost to Benfica (all out pressure team) but beat Spartak (counter attackers). We lost to a football playing Killie and an attack minded St. Johnstone but beat a similarly coached St. Mirren outfit. we overcame the defensive counter attacking of Aberdeen and, to a lesser extent, United.

There are vagaries in our form but they fall into no neat basket.

  15. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

I see the blog is still in sackcloth and ashes mode after yesterday’s result.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion,of course, but mine is that the replay takes place after an important Euro tie,and another league game.

Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is another day.

Time, lads,to big up the team for their achievements so far, rather than dwelling on the negatives-and,aye,I’m aware that there have been a fair few.

Hark at me-the least-likely happy-clapper ever, but the negativity is even getting ME down!

  16. For what its worth, i would say the chances of the Arbroath replay going ahead a week on Wednesday are 50/50 in the current freezing climate

I can’t see Arbroath spending heavily on any hot air machines etc. They will want to make as much money out of the tie as possible
