The lesson from Arbroath

760

So what did we learn yesterday?  Primarily we learned that you can’t replace 8 players from a team which won 0-4 at Tynecastle while leaving the core element of the team in place.  It is justifiable to be critical of the performances of experienced key players who didn’t perform, but Wanyama, Brown, Matthews, Miku didn’t become bad players overnight, nor did Tony Watt, what happened is the essence of our team – the system – was missing.

The effort was there but the focus which makes this Celtic team wasn’t.  In many ways this was the perfect setup for a Champions League game against a team too many people are telling me we’ll turn over.  Our Christmas Cup Final on Wednesday will require every element that existed against Barcelona last month.

The knives are out for Spartak’s foreign players, who are taking the blame for the clubs disintegration since losing at home to Celtic, both in the press and online fan polls.  We may see a more Russian looking Spartak on Wednesday.  Which will be no bad thing.

My earliest experiences supporting Celtic were before Jock Stein returned to the Park and it has to be said those formative years have stayed with me. Didn’t get to go to the big matches though, but listened to matches on the radio, and rarely missed Scotsport or Sportsreel. And highlights on the Pathe News at the pictures! (Check out the !963 Scottish Cup Final, in colour) We did not win anything, although we came close, 1961 and then 1963. We lost games in the league but my attitude then and now was, I hope we win the next one! Yesterday was disappointing, how could it be anything else for a Celtic supporter, but there will be another chance to progress in that particular Cup. And a chance to progress through to the European Cup! Let’s hope we win that one!

The Scottish Courts verdicts on Neil Lennon and the nail bombers was far more abhorrent than Anthony Stokes action and Tom British said nowt. Tom British got his backside kicked over his Charles Green article last week and is performing unabashed fraternity fellatio.

  4. sorry can’t do the link thing, on the rte i player Jim McGuinness is interviewed on the Saturday night show discussing his methods and his new job at celtic. as other posts have stated, this man is the real deal, his management and achievements with the donegal squad are incredible. Hopefully he will get the chance to work on the first team squad in the near future

would that be a fair reflection

  9. Awe naw,

Charles Green didn’t set up a meeting with these characters specifically and being a yorkshireman you can’t honestly tell me he has the knowledge stokes does on the emotions riled with such actions.

Papers ignoring similar with other teams still doesn’t condone Stokes associating with criminals.

All these demands from armchair managers over the teams domestic wobbles smacks of green hunishness (poetic license) to me.

We have the biggest and most expensive squad in Scotland, but who says we have a god given right to win every game? When we are fighting on four fronts, our squad in reality is NOT big enough when injuries and exhaustion (Charlie Mulgrew).

Our management team are kids compared with many they are pitting their wits against. They were appointed ad hoc and since have achieved what most of us, myself included would have considered unimaginable.

The Huns are gone. The toilets are safe from destruction and the air at Paradise is certainly more pure. Aberdeen, Hibs and others are fighting for second and a few points taken off us are considered achievable when our kids are knackered from never ending consecutive games.

My point being enjoy life for a whilst indulging in a guffaw at the ruinous cretins making fools of the tattooed hordes. Watch the Barcelona game again and enjoy the post holiday footie. If do make the last 16, it will strike a blow for integrity over financial doping and out of touch wealthy landlords.

  14. There is something very endearing about Kojo coming on to a Celtic site & telling US what is wrong with our club.

it is like when your wee grandchild just has to have something to say about whatever the conversation happens to be.

‘ Papa, can I tell you what is wrong with Celtic ?’

    Yes, of course you can.

God love him. It is not his fault.

    He simply needs attention.

Well done to Hibernian, out go the Cup holders! Not often you play the same team in the same Cup in the same calendar year.

Things not looking good for Martin O’Neill, wonder if losing John Robertson has weakened his overall approach? Either way he is pretty much in exactly the same place as Steve Bruce this time last year, when Sunderland told him to go to hell. Or was that Hull?

  20. Anyone else think it might be worth taking a wee punt on Andrew Driver.

A couple of years ago, he looked like a potentially very good player who could do a job at lower half of EPL / upper end of Championship club.

Now , he is struggling at a poor Hearts team, and looks short of confidence and fitness.

    I suspect we could get him for a modest outlay – £200 / £300 k (a lot less than a Bangura).

Lenny has shown an ability to take players with a bit of talent and athleticism from other Scottish clubs like Charlie M and get them playing to their potential .

A similar gamble with Driver , looks a relatively inexpensive gamble.

  21. football is unpredictable, we drew yesterday and we now move on to the next game on wednesday.

dont understand the hooper critics, he’s hardly played this season, due to injury, but has a decent goal to game return, i would sell in january if he has not signed the new contract offered. victor is in the same boat, in that i would rather keep for a few more years, but would not risk losing out on a transfer fee. am sure the scout will have identified replacements, all be it cheaper ones.

NFL is doing an good job and i follow the chain of thought that the longer a manager is in place the more success your team will have, so long as the manager is of a decent standard.

    Roast yer garlic. Top tip.

Wrap the entire bulb in tin foil and give it the message in the oven for about 30 minutes.

The cloves turn to soft, sweet, concentrated squishy morsels that infuse any dish with the grandeur of garlic without the bitterness we often get with supermarket stuff.

reading back and caught a mention of the 67 scf v the dons

always remember that game as it was my first cup final (6 and a halve yrs old ) i was .

me and my wee da were in the very front row of that stupid wee north stand that had about 100 seats i think.

the one thing that sticks in my mind about that game was me dropping my bovril over the front of the stand on top of the dons fans below .

they weren’t pleased and neither was i

my da wouldnt get me another one.

still the wisp scored a brace and we won.

pretty sure we won a few other things that season as well:-):-)

driver had potential and that potential was overestimated. he is a decent player, but we have a clutch of young players that easily offer that and more i.e. forrest, george, mcgeogh and ibrahium etc… we also have paddy, commons sammy

he’ll be off for a couple of k to rangers or a championship team am sure
