The look of a transition season

294

Kelechi Iheanacho (28) fills the Adam Idah shaped hole in the squad a day after agreeing to terminate his Sevilla contract.  The striker left Leicester City last summer after seven years but endured a torrid time there (11 appearances, no goals), then on loan at Middlesborough (15 appearances, one goal) for the second half of last season.

Brendan Rodgers worked with Kelechi for four of the strikers best years and managed him through his most productive period.  The manager has a clear preference for experience and for footballers who have played at the highest level, he will know better than me what he can get out of Kelechi.

From a strategic position, it’s not on the plan I thought we were following.  Squad and first team places are scarce and (with few exceptions) should be occupied by players with potential to develop to a Champions League level, be sold and release funds to be reinvested.

This increasingly has the look of a transition season.  A paltry £13m spent with only Callum Osmand (19) under the age of 23 is a strategy that will not deliver sustainable development.  This has the look of a ‘one season and out’ project.

Welcome to Celtic, Kelechi.

Supporters left in the slow lane dressed up as transition

    Welcome to Celtic Kelechi,

You could have written the script and the post script a lot of supporters did, the Celtic sophisticate crushes coaches and confines them to the bin. No level of ‘elite’ will do, Stein, O’Neill , Rodgers all ran their race at Billy McNeill’s “ fairy tale club .”

All they know, or all they’ll tell you is that there’s no for sale signs on bulk share holders, that pull their strings on Parkhead’s puppets, whilst they play musical chairs and old school tie, you’re het. BR’s head coach undermined in summer and had to ask in the Lennoxtown canteen, who the new Left Back was?

If the Celtic budget ( no laughing at the back ) can’t stretch to fill obvious gaps in a modern progressive club including the holes in the Northstand roof, from the ‘good value’ range the supporters know somebody’s tea’s oot. The CEO remember him relieved his big window has slammed shut, he’s WFH again, and tucked up waiting on a delivery from the Yodel guy, after two nights in a row of arduous 11.00pm shifts.

HCTS is the first in a line of casualties, but they are away ahead of the ordinary supporter and always have been in the “ Let them eat cake “ boardroom. Some pathos, asking BR to stay on, and bite his tongue till the easy smooth transition, to the wee Shauny Show maybe he’ll have a better ‘ eye for a player ‘ than any of them.

Or get another manager next season with similar approach to Brendan ?

That would not be my strategy – too many variables which could lead to another rebuild for me.

Everton is my English and I watch nearly all their games. Apparently he played 4 games last session and 18 the year before.

I assume I’ve seen him play but honestly can’t recall….

  6. I fail to see the player trading model strategy at work. Every penny according to lawell, in the recent past, is reinvested in the team. You can’t build up the best part of 100 million in the bank through mass sales year on year, not sourced replacements and make such claims with a straight face unless you are a very good lier.

Based on the evidence we see with our own eyes the celtic board are driven by the desire to gather as much profit as possible, profit is the desired outcome, that is the goal, that is the intention. Problem is you can’t be telling supporters that.

Lots of realignment is needed to find a better balance so the board and the supporters get what they want. That is possible but requires a willingness to change and that is not likely.

Anyone know why the Sat 20 Dec Aberdeen match has been changed to Sun 22 Dec? No EL game that week.

Me too. Dyche didn’t fancy him and neither did Moyes in a team that was desperately struggling for goals.

Seems to have injury issues too. £8m seems a lot of money – especially for a Scottish club.

If a player trading model worked, we would have sold Daizen, who was at his peak last year. We should also have had his and kyogo replacement in place, swiftly. Sadly, we’re not very good at a lot of things.

  12. Strikers here, strikers there, strikers everywhere but none want to come to Celltic which brings to mind a Sergeant Striker in the American marine corp. We might have got him if he was still available.. What about all this mind blowing money being thrown around like confetti in the EPL for yes strikers I believe the sources of which is doubtful according to morning radio news. Surely not corruption. Adam must be having chuckle with all the bloomin messin going on too get him into and out of the club meanwhile Swansea are rubbing their hands with glee snatching a great bargain with a handsome goals tally and considerable experience against some high level opposition.

I don’t know what goes on in the background. So whatever I say will be a guess.

I suppose that, all else being good, then yes, Daizen would have been moved on last year.

However, that would only work if replacements were already in the building.

So my guess would be that he won’t be sold until we have replaced Kyogo, and Kuhn.

  14. Re missing out on Dolberg I can’t say I’m too bothered…I’d never heard of him until we showed an interest in him….and I don’t think his stats are out of this world either. Is he worth £10m?….we’ll never know…Iheanacho might even be better..

So where does that profit all go ?

We are a transparent club unlike so many.

Every penny accounted for in the accounts.

Thats why it’s known there are profits not paid out to board or employees.

    Zero value in that.

  22. Fed up.Nothing. to look forward to except, our new striker putting in the hours, hard work, getting back to as near as possible, his brilliant best, under Brendan,

both our new wingers, flying. Our defence is sound,I have no worries about any other team challenging us,until they actually do.

Burnley,no new updates on my opinion from yesterday. Still a tosser.
