The look of a transition season

294

Kelechi Iheanacho (28) fills the Adam Idah shaped hole in the squad a day after agreeing to terminate his Sevilla contract.  The striker left Leicester City last summer after seven years but endured a torrid time there (11 appearances, no goals), then on loan at Middlesborough (15 appearances, one goal) for the second half of last season.

Brendan Rodgers worked with Kelechi for four of the strikers best years and managed him through his most productive period.  The manager has a clear preference for experience and for footballers who have played at the highest level, he will know better than me what he can get out of Kelechi.

From a strategic position, it’s not on the plan I thought we were following.  Squad and first team places are scarce and (with few exceptions) should be occupied by players with potential to develop to a Champions League level, be sold and release funds to be reinvested.

This increasingly has the look of a transition season.  A paltry £13m spent with only Callum Osmand (19) under the age of 23 is a strategy that will not deliver sustainable development.  This has the look of a ‘one season and out’ project.

Welcome to Celtic, Kelechi.

Citizen Spike, that’s some chip on your shoulder and frankly I couldn’t care less if you boycott or not.

Whilst your “for every inaction there’s a greater and opposite reaction” sounds clever, it ultimately comes down to who holds ultimate power until the opposite force is strong enough.

Nothing of note will change unless you and your comrades can find a few hundred million quid to buy DD out.

Reading your posts on here from afar I get the sense of a bitter man who’s taken it tight for years from the `’elites”.

    Hopefully your day will come👍

  8. Yamada not making the EL squad is a strange one, especially given that he has been with us for a wee while and been given a bit of game time. And that the EL is going to provide a variety of opponents. Guess Brendan picked the UEFA players so can’t pin that one on the Board can we?

  9. So what does our absentee landlord do, well when approached by the wee mhan fae Croy and asked to invest 4 million in he read the prospectus and put in 8, a sum he believed was necessary to save us from financial ruin, he also underwrote a further £10 million for a £15 million share issue in 2005 to fund the Lennoxtown training ground, which increased his majority stake, no bad for a part time golfer

apologies for not doffing my cap.

do you think i dont know who holds real power in any facet of life.

the huns tell us we’re paranoid, the elites tell us we have a chip on our shoulder.

bitter at the elites wherever ? you better believe it. Does it shape my life, my happiness – nope.

iI’ll hate them with every fibre in my body whether i’ve taken it tight or not. I’ll hate them even when I’m happy with everyday life.

if the elites in the main stand dont understand their “customers”, then one day, their day will come.

but ultimately, it wont really have come, they wont give a flying either way.

  18. Incredible. Incredible.

Everyone on this site loves our club. Everyone. A few hunterlopers as the exception. Everyone.

We love it in different ways. To different degrees. But we all love this club.

Some people accuse me of wanting to stifle dissent on my own site. I don’t care about dissent. I don’t care about disagreement. People disagree with me on everything. My girlfriend disagrees with me on what the best thing to put on dinner is. We can take disagreement.

But to be accused of being an enemy of Celtic? And for what? For expressing a dissenting point of view? To be talked down to because your perspective on where this club is differs from those of another person who also loves this club? What is that?

Some of you are absolute dickheads. And that’s got nothing to do with the fact we disagree. It’s because you’re sanctimonious fucks. You are people who I wouldn’t tolerate for two seconds in a real world setting, not that some of you would ever even DREAM of talking to people in person the way you think you can do it on here. What big balls you have. To talk trash whilst you hide behind fake names at a distance, speaking about fellow Celtic fans the way some of you do … who are you people?

I’ve been working online in blogging about this club and other Scottish football issues for more than a decade. And the first choice I made is still the best one I ever made; to do it under my own name. I’m easy to find. I don’t hide. And I’ve been doing this job and pissing people off in a dangerous city, this whole time … none of you folk hiding behind user names impress me in the least.

Your conduct is embarrassing. It’s actually cringeworthy.

Nobody is asking you to respect the views of other people. That’s beyond you. But respect the people. Respect their motivations. Respect that they love Celtic as you do. Not like you do, but that’s the point. That’s tolerance. That’s respect.

Or don’t. Be the arseholes you come across as.

Honestly, what pathetic worlds you live in that this is where you get your satisfaction.

This site used to be the best of all of them. You’re why it no longer is.

  19. JF

is it possible to be a dickhead and an arsehole at the same time ?

    just joking :)

    Nonsense once again.

At what point do you stop and think, maybe the fans who post here had a point.

When Brendan is chased out of town?

When that mob have a full trophy cabinet?

Brendan is keeping things together just now under the most ridiculous circumstances.

First to walk should be Nicholson then we might see some semblance of recovery from this embarrassment.

  27. Good Morning Fholks – From The Damp But Sunny Chilterns

    Quadrophenian @ 12:00 am,

    Yes agreed…

How anyone thinks most of the project players we have signed over the last dozen years will get to UCL level is beyond me.

Why anyone feels that this should it be an exclusive strategy and will manage to create a Celtic football team is beyond me.

Why anyone can look at the transfer fees, salaries, club resources and all sundry costs, invested in this “model” between 2013 and 2023 and still say we should be persevering with it is not beyond me…

    It’s a flawed business strategy.

The other point is, how are we going to get any players; even our good ones to UCL level when the Board don’t do any preparation or investment to try to get us to qualify for the UCL is beyond me.

    Hail Hail

    The clappers are back 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

  29. There’s precious little evidence to support Yamada getting his spot. I’ve seen nothing so far.

Kenny has scored this season and has 5 goals previously in the Europa conference.

We’ve spent 1.5 million on a player not as good as Johnny Kenny.

  30. ADVERTISEMENT
  31. And if player development is your thing – Kenny at 22 seems a far better bet than Yamada at 25 years old.

  32. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

    An Dun

I have no sense of Yamada’s potential based on the little I’ve seen, though it seems clear he has heart. Something we’re short of at present.

But I agree re Kenny. The kid is a natural striker and has shown he can score goals. I want to see him given the chance this season because I think he’ll score goals for us too. I’m hoping Kenny’s development is one happy unintended consequence from Nicholson’s latest disaster class.

I don’t want his chances restricted by a disinterested, overweight, non-firing panic buy.

  33. BR has repeatedly raised questions about players fitness.

Nobody should feature in our relaunched European campaign if they cannot complete a bog standard game of 90+ minutes.

Our substitutions should be for tactical reasons , not for predictable lack of fitness which opposition sides use certain predictability in their favour
