The magnificent Stevie Chalmers

244

Celtic have been synonymous with great goal scorers throughout their history, but only McGrory, Lennox, Larsson and Quinn scored more than Stevie Chalmers, who died this morning, aged 83.  But, unlike all the other greats in our history, Stevie scored the winning goal in a European Cup Final.  If he did nothing else in his entire time as a footballer, this would be enough to ensure a vaulted place in the history books, but Stevie did much more.

In a portent of what lay ahead, Celtic were without a league title for 12 years when Stevie scored a hat-trick against Rangers in January 1966.  That feat boomed across the land: Celtic were in command.  The next nine league titles would go to Parkhead.  Goals galore followed for Stevie, who rejoiced in his role as Celtic centre forward.

Stevie’s journey to the top was unconventional.  Serious illness blighted his early adulthood and he was 23 before he joined Celtic, his first senior club.  He played through the difficult early 60s until the return of Jock Stein, whose magic sparked the most remarkable run of success known in British sport.

Like his great captain Billy McNeill, Stevie suffered dementia in recent years.  Both lived the lives of Celtic supporters before becoming players and legends.  Like all of that great team, Stevie remained accessible to fans throughout his life.  They were magnificent on the field and magnificently normal human beings off the field.  It was as though Stevie would never allow himself to believe the full impact of what he did.

April 2019 has taken its toll on our greatest team ever.  Rest in Peace, Stevie.

We also lost one of our most respected CQN’ers yesterday, MurdochauldandHay.  Rest in Peace, Stephen.

You are so right . There will always be another ticket but there will never be another McNeill or Chalmers.

I’m going over to CP now…grey hair, red jumper and dark glasses (to hide the red eyes)…I’d like to say hello if anyone is there…

  3. What a brutal couple of weeks it’s been for bad news.

Thoughts and prayers for all who are mourning the loss of loved ones recently departed.

R.I.P. Stevie Chalmers, and God Bless you.

Another legend , another boyhood hero of mine ( and many others ), another sad day.

  4. R.I.P. Stevie Chalmers a true Celtic legend scorer of the most famous goal in the clubs history.

God Bless and keep you Stevie.

    Loved the wee clip.

However I have to admit that “scrupulously far” was not the two word phrase that jumped to my mind when I thought about tiny Wharton as A ref.

First word was the name of afruit and I don’t mean a tomato.

  6. Just an Idea….

Now…. apart from choosing what Ref is in charge of their games, the Huns now Dictate what Colour of Strip the Opposition should wear ( Re yesterdays Fixed match v Aberdeen) in matches against THEM….Maybe Celtic should ENSURE that next season in the 1st game against the Huns at Celtic Park…OUR Goalie should wear a Celtic Strip in “Our Lady’s BLUE “….and then Insist that the Huns MUST change into their Mankie away kit..so that there is No Colour clash ?

ALL the huns had to do yesterday was to get Thug, Bampot McGregor to change into a different colour Jersey..instead of the Whole Aberdeen squad having to change into their Away Strip….This Mob just want EVERYTHING THEIR Way…scumbags.

Obviously a scrupulously fair handshake he was exchanging g with John Greig in the famous pre match photo

  8. The 5-1 thrashing of the Huns on New Years Day 1966 is embedded in my memory and of course that hattrick by one of my all time favorite players, Stevie Chalmers. It was a freezing cold day and on a bone hard pitch, the straw was removed and the match went ahead. Celtic dominated the first half but Rangers scored through Wilson. The second half was a procession towards the Celtic end with big Yogi in his baseball shoes tormenting the Huns but it was Stevie who did the business with his goals. After the 5th went in I was making my way through the crowd back up the terracing to meet my uncles when I fainted, early kick off no food. I was hoisted aloft and passed down the crowd.(a common site at that time) I awoke lying on a brown stretcher under the main stand being revived by an ambulance man with smelling salts. Was it 5-1 I said ? Yes, son. Not a game I shall ever forget.

May you Rest In Peace Stevie, thanks for the wonderful memories.

R.I.P. Stevie Chalmers – another sad day for the family and friends of a great man, and huge figure in Celtic’s history.

On the subject of Cup Final tickets – really sorry for all of those who haven’t yet been successful – husband of girl in the office has had the same bad news – he never misses a game home or away (except Ibrox).

Although I would have been OK, if necessary, to watch it in the pub – I am nevertheless absolutely delighted for the sake of Wee BGFC that we have been successful. We will try to proudly represent all of out CQN people at Hampden in May – and I’ll keep my eyes and ears open for any ‘spares’ for people on here.

I am hopeful that Hertz will possibly hand back some tickets, so perhaps some hope on that front.

  10. Another sombre week in Paradise.

Most Celtic fans wishing for a point or more, at Pittodrie so that the visit to the Zombie dome is even less academic than it should have been, but the huge collaborative of Scotland failed, 9 points short with only three games to go.

Blatant cheating coupled with the worst diciplinary statistics since 2012, highest penalties awarded, random weekly assaults ignored, sees Sevco, prepare for nothing but more begging bowls for the assault on nine. This won’t be before Celtic are abused in Govan just one more time, and pragmatists in our support expecting nada, from the utterly toxic fixture.

Brendan Rodgers helped create’ a gap’ in Scotland but he also left behind ‘ team one,’ he never tried for a ‘team two’ which would have come in summer. Someone has to restructure the playing squad. Neil Lennon can change things for the remaining four games, but shuffling the squad he’s inherited, leaves us unbeaten but with a report card that read ‘must do better’

I don’t believe he could have with the players he inherited, we need to offload some of the good players we have, and buy better, the usual suspects that shouldn’t have been hired, leave room for summer signings no one else can afford, the Celtic board are too smart to stagnate on eight.

    Aren’t they ? CSC

  11. BSR – my hope is the Board over-deliver with some luxury to spare this momentous, historic domination…..

anything else is unthinkable and the stuff of nightmares.

  12. What is striking about this group of players is their humility and integrity that lasted their lifetimes, it is great people that make true legendary status not great players.

  13. I sound sign McKenna, Turnbull a right back & a centre forward … maybe Rafa has already identified one or two players …. just a pity Dundee are going down I would prefer at least one of the plastic pitches to go down, Kris Ajer & Jozo could be a great pairing, Turnbull & MacGregor could be a terrific partnership for many seasons, Eddy & the Griff could terrify defences

  15. Tough times indeed at the moment on the history front.

Trying to understand CFC in the early sixties and why it all came together.

Interesting to find out the detail of the team that came together for 65-74.

Who were the senior players who had come through the barren 8 years and then blossomed.

Another hero departed, what a sad week for Celtic supporters everywhere. Sincere condolences to Stevie’s family.

Simpson, Murdoch, McNeil, Johnstone, Chalmers. Not a bad five-a-side team up there with Jock at the helm.

  17. The “Glasgow Connectivity Commission” is a group which has set out a vision for the future of public transport throughout the city.

Glasgow needs a city-wide metro system to reconnect left-behind areas and boost the economy, according to a radical new blueprint.

The Glasgow Connectivity Commission wants about £10bn to be spent over the next 20 years on a range of measures to upgrade the city’s transport capacity.

It said the first new link should be to Glasgow Airport via Renfrew, Braehead and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Other tram or light rail lines should then be spread out across the city.

The commission, which was set up by Glasgow City Council 18 months ago, wants the metro network to revive abandoned rail routes, convert heavy rail to light rail and develop on-street trams.

    The commission proposed:

Developing a Glasgow Metro to connect areas of the city poorly served by rail

Connecting Glasgow Central and Queen Street stations by a tunnel to increase capacity

Extend Glasgow Central station to the south of the Clyde to prepare for HS2 services

Developing plans for bus priority on Glasgow’s motorway network

Preparing for the shift to electric vehicles by considering new methods of road charging

Transport expert Prof David Begg, who chaired the commission, told BBC Scotland that Glasgow’s economy was “punching below its weight” and too many people were cut off by poor transport links.

The map of the plans include a route close to Celtic Park which would be very welcome if it ever succeeds.

  19. RIP Stevie Chalmers – another Legend gone. It’s been a very sad week for all connected with the Club. I’ve been a Celtic Supporter since being taken to my first ever Final by my Grandpa (the 1953 Coronation Cup). When I think of it these days – I’ve been a Supporter for just over half the time CFC have been in existence (how time flies).

It’s had its many ups and downs – the joy of seeing 71 Major Trophies won (to date) but also the great sadness of losing Club Legends for whom the Sands of Time have finally run out.

My thoughts and prayers with the families and friends of Stevie and Billy and likewise – with those of our esteemed poster MA&H (who we sadly lost last week). H!H!

The London Road tunnel definitively has promise but it would be a big task to bring it back into use as the connection to High Street has been built over in places and it would take a lot of work to fully integrate with Bridgeton.

Plus after the 9 months or roadworks outside the arena in the recent past I don’t know if the tunnel was impacted in any way.

Finally the report itself is tripe — £10bill spend given the current state of the city?

Not a chance just LA froth to get a few headlines plus most of their plans are very poor.
