The Mahatma Gandhi question

902

It was curious that Peter Lawwell was quizzed on potentially having a conflict of interest in deciding if a recent multiple-convict would be regarded by the SFA as Fit and Proper to direct a football club.  The club in question are not even in our league; conflict exists only in the heads of those who persist in believing in a ‘Firm which expired on the liquidation of one party.

I’ve avoided the appropriateness of a recent convict directing a football club as the deciding matters appear overwhelmingly obvious.  There are no written rules on being Fit and Proper, largely due to the Mahatma Gandhi question posed by Neil Doncaster last year.  Gandhi was a convict, but one of impeccable character.  The contemporaneous character references are all important.  The SFA will also be chastened by recent experiences.

My guess is that in the unlikely event the Nomads acquiesce, Peter Lawwell’s views will be immaterial.  “Nobody likes us, we don’t care” has nothing to do with it, just find someone Fit and Proper!

Delighted that Aberdeen’s quest for silverware survived Fir Park last night.  This club have underachieved for around 20 years now but Derek McInnes stands a reasonable chance of delivering second place in the league, as well as the League Cup.

Not so delighted at Hibs capitulation.  Despite playing like Brazil in the 1970 World Cup for the first 15 minutes of their home tie against Hearts last night they were soon out-muscled, with more than a few players looking miles out of their depth.  There is no compensation for Scottish football in Hearts progressing to the semi-finals.  They are mid-crisis and will remain so, irrespective of how they perform in cup competitions, but the absence of Hibernian from the genuine challengers is a regret.

Morton went down to a late St Johnstone goal.  They have now lost five and drawn one of their six games since winning at Celtic Park, their only victory since August…..

With this in mind, I’ll refrain from referring to the potential advantage of having a Cup Final at ‘home’ until we have earned the right to be there.

Dreadful news of Fernando Ricksen.  I hope he finds strength from those close to him in the years ahead.

The new CQN Annual is looking great, really delighted with it. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the project. You can pre-order below:

Neil Canalamar. Can you give me examples of where UEFA are changing the face of European football ? H.H.

    JFH,

Jam tomorrow is getting tiresome, taking the game out of the reach of the majority of the support is no something I want to see. Aye you and the board and probably quite a few more who can afford it would probably love to go glory hunting all over Europe and ditching those less well off.

    No something I’d subscribe to.

I mentioned a few weeks ago on here about the religious discrimination and at times persecution my Father and our family experienced, particularly with regards to employment..No unemployment. Still see it to this day.

The point I was trying to make, maybe unsuccessfully, was that we don’t know what they were lifted for. I don’t know but with the over the top cavalcade of a dozen cop cars taking them to court we can take an educated guess that it was more than a wee bit of singing….And for all I know those arrested were maybe planning some terrible atrocity. I don’t know…that’s all I meant to say: let’s wait and see what it’s about before we start leaping to their defence

Celtic will only get better in Europe the more they play in it. Stay in Scotland.

There are no viable options available anyway.

A European league for all countries is a mere decade or two away. Remain patient and keep doing what we are doing. We will be involved no doubt about that. European players salivate at the thought of playing at our ground. We have one of the best atmosphere’s and arena’s in Europe and it will only get better as will the team.

Patience is the key. I want to beat old Rangers league title haul anyway before we depart.

I linked the FAC e-mail via the Celtic Trust and got this reply from Patrick Harvie fairly quickly:-

“Thanks for your email. I voted against the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act, having unsuccessfully tried to persuade the Government to accept amendments to address some of its most serious flaws. Since it became law I have repeatedly called for an early review. I continue to believe that its existence risks making the problems which arise from some football matches, including Old Firm hostility, worse rather than better.

Since the Act was passed, I have asked a number of written questions on this issue, some of which you can see here:

    http://goo.gl/rBJrXX

I have also pursued this issue in face to face meetings with Ministers, and I will continue to call for an early review of the legislation.

I do however find it unfortunate that in opposing this bad piece of legislation some people appear to be in denial of the problems which do arise in relation to aspects of Scotland’s football culture. In particular I disagree with your interpretation of figures obtained by STV on domestic violence, which related to the overall number of incidents recorded and did not include an examination of the impact of any football matches. For a fuller analysis of the situation, you may wish to refer to the recent study conducted by public health researchers at St Andrews University:

    http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/news/archive/2013/title,227665,en.php

I believe that those opposing the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act and calling for its review would do well to remain focused on the flaws of that legislation, rather than entering into a drawn-out debate over the research on domestic violence, the conclusions of which seem clear.

    Sincerely,

    Patrick Harvie”

I also got a reply from Ruth Davidson:-

hank you for taking the time to contact me about the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.

I completely share your concerns surrounding the application of the legislation, which the Scottish Conservatives voted against. The first annual statistics on the 2012 Act show conviction rates are considerably lower than those for aggravated breaches of the peace, the very offence the Act was designed to replace.

I am also aware of concerns expressed by the judiciary, the legal profession and supporters groups that the Act was poorly drafted and was being inappropriately applied and promoted by the Crown.

As you point out, the Scottish Government is committed to reviewing the Act but not until 2015. The Scottish Conservatives have already called for an earlier review of the Act and will continue to put pressure on the Scottish Government to examine this legislation as soon as possible.

    Yours sincerely,

    Ruth Davidson MSP”

No replies as yet from SNP or Labour members but it is early days. Interestingly, I fear Mr. Harvie might have a point about introducing the Domestic Abuse stats into this separate argument. Whilst I could take issue with him on the research, I feel the primary purpose of defeating the Bill is best served by separating out these issues.

Neil canalamar. In European football Money is King with 60,000 fans at home matches and a large travelling support Celtic can provide income. I have recently watched a couple of Champions League matches abroad with near empty stadiums now this means some clubs just dont have the fan base to generate that income Platini and co. are aware of that and looking to change it so it puts us in a great position. On the subject of cost due to the volume support Celtic could provide would helpto bring prices down and with in the reach of most supporters it is unfortunate that there are posters due to there personal circumstances cant go to away games in Scotland and unless a match is on tv the best they can hope for is to listen to the radio. So lets imagine Celtic are away to Atletico Madrid there fan base is large so along with the Celtic away support the Ground is full.So to generate extra income for Atletico,Celtic and UEFA the game is beamed back to Parkhead where 30,000 pay say £15 per person. Now we are playing on a level playing field and can afford to sign the top players due to huge tv monies. So we are leaving no one behind everyone who follows Celtic is a winner or we can continue to fight for equality in Scotland and visit Dingwall on a wet Sunday lunch time.I know what I would rather do but your entitled to your small vision. As I said, generally I don’t agree with incarcerating people pending trial and I’m very much against detention without charge.

However these people have been arrested, and the police feel they have sufficient evidence to charge them with terrorism offenses including plotting to murder.

You seem to be stating that they shouldn’t be kept in custody pending trial, and I’m saying I’m open to the argument that people charged with specific types of offenses should.
