Turnbull Hutton, who resigned as Raith Rovers chairman in November, died last night after a short illness. When Scottish Football League chairmen were presented with an Armageddon scenario in 2012 his voice of dissent was first to be heard. Those at the top of Scottish football tried to convince SFL clubs it was in THEIR interests to grant newco Rangers access to the second tier of Scottish football. Hutton saw through this and called-out the presentation by Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir, chief execs of the SFA, SPL and SFL respectfully, for what it was.
Craig Whyte bought Rangers in 2011. Within months his team crashed out Europe and he had devised a plan to liquidate, phoenix with a newco and present the SPL with a fait accompli – give me a place in the top flight and I’ll save your league programme and commercial deals.
Once Duff and Phelps were installed as administrators Craig lost control. Had he been able to force through a quick liquidation there is a very good chance the SPL would have voted to allow newco access to the top flight. Newco would have been debt free and able to strengthen their team in 2012.
It would have destroyed Celtic, who had no choice but to resist. As the weeks passed, one by one, SPL clubs said ‘No’. By May the baton passed to the Scottish Football League, who would not only be asked to vote newco as a new member, which the rules permitted them to do, but to elevate this club to the Championship.
The cost of liquidation and becoming a phoenix newco was established by Turnbull Hutton. The rules permitted the applicant club would ask to be voted into the bottom tier of the professional league structure. Hutton insisted the rules be followed, nothing more. For this, Scottish football is in his debt.
You have three days left to bid on the fabulous hospitality for four people one day at this summer’s Open Golf Championship at St Andrews, which takes place from 16-19 July.
The auction is in aid of the Celtic Quick News appeal to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. Shuttle transport for the five minute journey to and from the golf course as needed, with beer, Gin and Whisky tastings throughout the day with the master distiller.
You also have the chance to create a unique CQN single malt whisky cask worth potentially £5000 for future CQN charities, and you will receive a bottle of this very special single malt whisky to commemorate the great day when it is bottled in several years.
Eden Mill is Scotland’s newest and most innovative distillery and brewery incorporated in February 2012! Located just 2 miles from the famous Old Course itself it provides a perfect base for hospitality for yourself and 3 friends on a day of your choosing at the forthcoming open golf championship on July 16th to 19th.
But this is so much more than just a day’s hospitality at the home of golf. Before taking to the course to watch, you will enjoy a breakfast roll or two and discuss your perfect single malt whisky with the master distiller.
Whilst you and your friends are enjoying the golf he will seek to surpass your favourite whisky by using the best barley to create the right wash and recommending the right type of barrels for our very own unique CQN 1/4 cask of single malt. A cask which will mature and provide over £5000 of future funding for our charities in a few years’ time.
You will return to the distillery by shuttle bus for lunch and an optional beer tasting and then for afternoon tea with a tutored gin and whisky tasting with the owner capping off a memorable, unique and very special day for your group and for CQN.
My thanks to Eden Mill for their incredible support. You can bid on the auction here.

Just in case you want to drop a word or two to his club/family/friends
Night Mr H. You spoke honestly and openly against mendacity, corruption and cronyism within Scottish Football, at a time when others looked the other away. I wish I had met you and shaken your hand.

Seems they’ve moved on to facebook and twatter now also.
It’ll be CTV next ……………………mark my words !!!!!
The most fitting tribute to Turnbull Hutton wouldn’t be a minutes applause or silence; it would be for those in positions of power to take up his mantle and seek the changes required in Scottish football.
That should be his legacy.
Paul67 et al
Not such a happy Monday after all.
Condolences to first and foremost his family, his friends and his beloved Raith Rovers.
It is not only Scottish football that is poorer in his passing, it is Scotland itself.
Requiescat in pace Turnbull Hutton
all good CRC mate
a hard copy of this would be really appreciated if anyone’s got one

To a giant of a man
Turnbull Hutton
Rest in peace

A TRUE legend of the game
Rest in peace Turnbull Hutton, a man who stood firmly for integrity when the otherwise sleekits would have had their way. Scottish football will be poorer for his passing.
More is the pity, however, since Mr. Hutton stood up to the hun it has been a regulatory whitewash ever since.
Only the installation of the village idiot as manager, and a series of fraudsters have dragged them to their knees. It has never been about the fair application of rules.
Lest we forget.
Obsessed? You betcha.
Here it goes folks.
On here, I’m a mere lurker and very occassional poster.
I read very often. I like this place and I know it can be special in the true sense. I’m a curious being, curious and still learning about life… and I learn things here. Humanity, apathy and respect means all to me, and I’m blinded by it on here at times. Great guys, great minds.
I don’t get too involved though, because I don’t have enough to say. I feel inferior amongst folks who have strong and structured points to make.
This place though, is beatiful. Celtic is a beatiful club. It’s folks are beautiful, and I am one.
My beliefs, my political or religious views won’t be the same as many… but my love is for all good, in a very simple way.
Here’s to the good souls! HH!

Very sad news about Turnbull, a man who defined integrity…
Popping out for a few in the Jolly Roger before the game in the Millentor; Forza Sankt Pauli!

Any celebration of Turnbull Hutton will have to be created by the fans IMO,can’t see CFC arranging anything to be honest
===============================
Agreed, although If Celtic were to hold a minute’s applause before Wednesday’s game it would be totally appropriate in my view.

RIP Turnbull Hutton, a man of integrity and bravery.
If only we had someone of his calibre on our board to face up to the cheating blazers at Hampden and the MSM.

They will be mourning in the streets of Raith tonight
Don’t want to pile on the bad news today but we haven’t heard from DerbyshireBhoy in a long time (maybe 6 months ?).
He had posted that he was having health issues and I wonder if anybody has heard from / knows him ?

Yes it would be nice to hear that Derbyshirebhoy is doing aswell as can be expected.

Unfortunately, it sounded pretty bad what he described.
Hope I’m wrong.
“What kind of game are we running here? It is corrupt” http://m.stv.tv/…/109094-raith-director-we-are-being-bulli…/ …
“[We are being] bullied, railroaded and lied to. We are being lied to by the Scottish FA and the SPL. We are being threatened and bullied. It is not football as I know it.
It was a ridiculous document which came out last week whereby the threat was there that if you don’t vote for an acceptance into the First Division, a breakaway SPL2 will come along and those who didn’t vote wouldn’t be invited.
What kind of game are we running here? It is corrupt.”
R.I.P. Turnbull Hutton
Turnbull Hutton: the man who saved what’s left of Scotland’s football soul.
May you enjoy eternal rest.

May Mr Hutton rest in peace.
I found interesting your comments ;
“Once Duff and Phelps were installed as administrators Craig lost control. Had he been able to force through a quick liquidation there is a very good chance the SPL would have voted to allow newco access to the top flight. Newco would have been debt free and able to strengthen their team in 2012.”
Whyte didn’t lose control when D & P took charge. They were his people. Ex Deidco chairman Johnston stated that the only time he ever saw Whyte in a panic was when HMRC moved to appoint their choice of administrators and Craigyboy raced to the High Court to beat them and have D & P installed.
D & P an integral part of Whyte’s strategy IMO.
Standing up for Mr.Turnbull Hutton, who stood up for Scottish football fans everywhere,
may he Rest In Peace.

I must admit my recollection of events accords with yours, the D & P administration was one of the strangest seen in football. Remember their first task was to try to sign Cousin.
Craigellachie 10.
True.We had the ridiculous situation of a team in administration trying to sign a player.
Rest in peace Turnbull Hutton and may perpetual light shine upon you.
You were one of the good guys and this country and Scottish football are all the poorer for you passing.
Fine words Paul67, for a fine upstanding man.
Turnbull Hutton RIP

My brother wrote an e mail to raith rovers thanking Turnbull Hutton for his stance and telling them that because he lives in kent he could not attend any matches to thank him but even though a diehard hoop he was buying a rovers shirt abc would proudly wear it in England
Next day he received a very personal and polite e mail from mr Hutton thanking my brother for his correspondence .
God rest the soul of Turnbull Hutton
RIP
