The Newcastle United takeover is a depressing manifestation on many fronts but with some money behind them, ever-mediocre Steve Bruce’s time in charge may be coming to an end. Bookmakers have installed one-win-in-nine-trophies expert, Steven Gerrard as their favourite. I sincerely hope he remains in Glasgow.
When Brendan Rodgers left for Crisptown, Celtic received £9m in compensation, a fee that bridged some of the gap between Europa and Champions League money that season. I expect Newco would receive the same for losing Gerrard.
Gerrard was perhaps saved from the sack when the league programme was curtailed in 2020 with boos from the Ibrox support as his team left the field to another defeat. Since then, he, along with Callum Davidson at St Johnstone, have profited from Celtic’s collapse, although Davidson helped himself to twice as many trophies. Faced with a functional and appropriately prepared Celtic, his teams have unerringly collapsed.
I see some speculation about Newco’s accounts this week (not far off my expectations). When they are eventually released, few will argue they need a compensation figure in the region of £9m more than any player or coach at the club. Gerrard is managerial bait. Let’s hope Newcastle go for our old pal, Eddie Howe, currently third favourite. They seem so well matched.

Hello.
Better read the article now.
Oh dear.
Somebody…
Anybody…
Come on.
I wouldn’t be unhappy to see the back of Gerard
he is box office and often elevates Sevco well beyond there status by his prescience here.
there is no direct path from Ibrox to Afield. He would go in a millisecond if offered the job. Spend 100’s millions to win an FA cup then take over at Liverpool
His team absolutely walked the league last season.
Doesn’t say much for the opposition.
i think Gerrard might be found out if he took over at Newcastle.
The suggestion is that The Barcodes’ new owners have ten times the wealth of Manchester City’s owners.
On the basis they will be spending considerable sums of money on their new plaything, why on earth would they be remotely interested in the likes of Gerrard/Beale?
Lazy journalism all round.
I happeened to listen to Talksort on my home yesterday as news broke of the sale of Newcastle United.
Much of the ecstatic phone in centred on a potential managerial appointment.
The fans want a box office serial trophy winner who has won the premier league and done something in europe.
They were talking The Chosen One, or Pep or Klopp.
They dont mind a cheque book manager, as long as it buys success.
No one mentioned Gerrard, why would the now richest club in the world want him ?
As a pure speculative aside, maybe Ashley will come back to invest in Rangers now he has spa re cash (aye right).
pps. surely Brendan is a better option for the toon. and more likely
login issues again, bloody pest
Mon Scotland – over for my first Scotland game in years tomorrow. Tartan Army pre game drinks in the Classic Grand on Jamaica Street. Was that not a mucky cinema in the 70s/early 80s?

Lazy bookies follow lazy journalist rumours.
I heard steve bruce s on the PL radar.
Bruce sounds like would welcome the sack and compo. looks tired
Amanda Staveley, who will be on the board of the new Newcastle gave an interview with the Mail in which she made it clear that they would prefer a manager with Premiership experience. Whether that means playing experience or solely managerial who knows but the article suggested they were looking at Rodgers.
It hasn’t stopped the bookies having SG as their favorite with BR third favorite behind Conte.
If the call comes then Park and co will have Gerrard’s desk cleared quicker than he will
I’m not with Paul, I think him and his team are better than their replacements would be, they won’t get lucky again
steve clarke presser, he is a bundle of laughs isnt he.
There is as much chance of me getting the NU job as slippy.

We’ll see how long Gerrard/Beale is favourite.
Next Manager markets are frequently the most volatile of betting markets and sometimes there are several changes of favouritism daily. They respond to small amounts of money either way on betting exchanges.
There is no guarantee any money bet is “smart money” as opposed to mug money. The bookies respond to it nonetheless.
And no need for sarcasm.
BR is 6th favorite, 16/1

You accused Paul of lazy journalism for suggesting that the bookies favorite for the job is a realistic option for Newcastle
You suggested that Newcastle wouldn’t have the remotest interest in Gerrard.
He’s the bookies favorite.
Sometimes sarcasm just fits
We don’t actually know what the plans are for Newcastle yet
Staveley is talking about them winning the EPL in the next 5-10 years. We don’t know if they’re going to front load their spending, what their attitude to FFP is, whether they see Newcastle as an investment from which they’ll want a return like the rest of the investments they have made

He speaks so well, and my goodness does he love being a celt.
through the PIF or if it’s more sport washing like City or PSG
Newcastle now want box office – a failed manager from the Scottish diddy league would not equate to that.

For your information, Gerrard/Beale has been near, or at the head of the Next Newcastle Manager market for several months. The now-irrelevant Ashley connection was factored into this.
It’s now fairly evident that post-takeover, Bruce is likely to be relieved of his duties.
The attention of the media now focuses more closely on his replacement and notes that G/B is already prominent in betting markets and makes a story out of it.
This narrative does not take into account that the the playing field has been changed by the takeover and that the new owners will more than likely have aspirations beyond Gerrard/Beale.
I would be extremely surprised if Gerrard/Beale was first choice and I am sure their remaining tenure as market favourites will be short lived.
If Gerrard did go, i reckon Mcinnes would step in this time
Stevie G has exceptionally good people looking after his own PR and an exceptional amount of goodwill toward him in English football circles.
That’s where the story came from. It’s no coincidence that his poor European results prompted his transfer outburst – his euro form (albeit largely against bang average sides) were his big selling point beyond winning a league against a celtic side that simply imploded.
I don’t think he’ll go to Newcastle but he appears to be paving the way for his move south in the summer.
If the Newcastle owners want to compete at home and then in Europe and money is no object, they are going to be looking several levels above SG. Someone who has been a manager of one of the top 6-8 CL teams in recent years. They can afford to buy the best and also to be ruthless. Hire and fire until you reach your objective. Gerard does not have the experience, the intellect, the presence or the tactical nous to go head to head with Pep, Klop etc.
I was already done with English football. This takeover is further proof that pro football in England is now a rich man’s play thing, utterly removed from its roots and any idea of fair play, financial or otherwise.
Conte for Newcastle
Big Judith luscious in leather
Might be a few bargains or loans to be had out of Newcastle after they spend big in the next 2 windows
