The manager more valuable as bait than a coach

The Newcastle United takeover is a depressing manifestation on many fronts but with some money behind them, ever-mediocre Steve Bruce’s time in charge may be coming to an end.  Bookmakers have installed one-win-in-nine-trophies expert, Steven Gerrard as their favourite.  I sincerely hope he remains in Glasgow.

When Brendan Rodgers left for Crisptown, Celtic received £9m in compensation, a fee that bridged some of the gap between Europa and Champions League money that season.  I expect Newco would receive the same for losing Gerrard.

Gerrard was perhaps saved from the sack when the league programme was curtailed in 2020 with boos from the Ibrox support as his team left the field to another defeat.  Since then, he, along with Callum Davidson at St Johnstone, have profited from Celtic’s collapse, although Davidson helped himself to twice as many trophies.  Faced with a functional and appropriately prepared Celtic, his teams have unerringly collapsed.

I see some speculation about Newco’s accounts this week (not far off my expectations).  When they are eventually released, few will argue they need a compensation figure in the region of £9m more than any player or coach at the club.  Gerrard is managerial bait.  Let’s hope Newcastle go for our old pal, Eddie Howe, currently third favourite.  They seem so well matched.

  1. Another thing that pisses me off. Why, at the start of every match, do the ref an linesmen walk out the tunnel first and lift the ball from the pedestal? I’m there to watch the football and the players, not the bloody officials. Why are they given star billing? They should be anonymous throughout the game

“We appoint a manager with no proven record in European football, who puts a team on the park that couldn’t keep hens out a close.”

Our defence has been awful in Europe but, despite a few bad results, hasn’t yet been too exposed at SPFL level.

After 8 games played, Hearts and United have done best conceding only 5 goals.

Celtic are joint 3rd with Sevco and St, Johnstone in shipping 6 goals.

I don’t believe we are seeing a solid defensive unit as yet but it is not as hapless, In Scotland, as you suggest.

P.S.- I know you have constantly worried about Ashley transferring his money from Newcastle to Ibrox. But I have to point out:-

    1) he has not been an nvestor interestd in generating football success at Newcastle; he is happy to have them remain in the EPL and buy his shirts.

    2) He is hated at Ibrox for his previous involvement and has not been given any reason to want to satisfy Sevco fan ambition. Again he is more likely to use his influence to get some money out of them.

    3) If he hasn’t been sickened by his involvement with Newcastle, he could get more bang for his buck in taking over a club from an area of England not saturated with existing Man U/Liverpool or the London Big 3 clubs fans e.g. Yorkshire , Bristol or even Birmingham’s 2nd club The Blues. There will always be room too for a 4th London club (Fulham, Charlton or QPR) to do a Brentford and sustain a move to the Premiership. As Scottish footbal fans we over-inflate the importance of Scottish football to English folk. It is a small national market with little financial return and the signs are that European success has stopped visiting here while the Big 5 Leagues monopolise.

  3. There must be a few well heeled Celtic Supporters along with just say Roger Mitchel who could buy Desmonds Shares ,I know this is a Micky mouse league we are in ,but looking at the fan base and everything else associated with Celtic some big hitters would invest in our club ,after all the Holy Grail for all clubs is to win the Champions league, which back in the day was named The European Cup which Celtic was the first British Club to do so .

  4. AssimilatedTIMBHOY163, I think you mean Celtic were the first club from the island of Britain to win the European Cup.

But…but…YOU said earlier that SG was the bookies favourite…and you sarcastically mocked another, decent, poster on here…for daring to suggest that Newcastle wouldn’t be interested in SG…and you mocked him on the basis that SG was fav with the bookies, so in your eyes this justified your use of sarcasm.

I note the recipient of your sarcasm predicted that SG would not remain bookies fav for long (something which you have now validated).

    Feeling rather foolish now?

    Probably not.

  6. This song dates from the Pennisula war, (1807-14) immediately following the 1798 Irish Republican Presbyterian Ied irish Rebellion. The British Army wasn’t popular with any Irishmen except planter Anglicans. The clues are in the words: swords, rapiers, red coats, drummers.
