The manager more valuable as bait than a coach

429

The Newcastle United takeover is a depressing manifestation on many fronts but with some money behind them, ever-mediocre Steve Bruce’s time in charge may be coming to an end.  Bookmakers have installed one-win-in-nine-trophies expert, Steven Gerrard as their favourite.  I sincerely hope he remains in Glasgow.

When Brendan Rodgers left for Crisptown, Celtic received £9m in compensation, a fee that bridged some of the gap between Europa and Champions League money that season.  I expect Newco would receive the same for losing Gerrard.

Gerrard was perhaps saved from the sack when the league programme was curtailed in 2020 with boos from the Ibrox support as his team left the field to another defeat.  Since then, he, along with Callum Davidson at St Johnstone, have profited from Celtic’s collapse, although Davidson helped himself to twice as many trophies.  Faced with a functional and appropriately prepared Celtic, his teams have unerringly collapsed.

I see some speculation about Newco’s accounts this week (not far off my expectations).  When they are eventually released, few will argue they need a compensation figure in the region of £9m more than any player or coach at the club.  Gerrard is managerial bait.  Let’s hope Newcastle go for our old pal, Eddie Howe, currently third favourite.  They seem so well matched.

  1. Before reading the `Welcome` part, I was stunned to read this:

“TRFC are delighted to announce the signing of Goalkeeper Ross Doohan on a season long loan from @CelticFC! Welcome to Prenton Park, Ross .

PS I was having a look after SFTB`s post re the young `keeper.

It’s not difficult I know but I am confused!?

My belief was that Celtic PLC planned and operated on the basis of no UCL money, then when we fail to get in the Champions League it doesn’t adversely impact our finances.

So why did we have to make up a shortfall!?

Also isn’t compensation money meant to… well compensate…

Should it not have been spent on a Manager, an Assistant Manager, Quality Coaching, Analytics and Performance support!?

    I think it should have.

    Hail Hail

It doesn’t mean the club HAD to make up a shortfall because as you say, CL football is not budgeted for. It just means that the £9m just happened to help make up the shortfall.

Good morning from a grey, dry and mild Auld Reekie.

Heading to Hampden today for my first international since Scotland v Brazil in Paris 1998.

My son decided to take my 6 year old grandson to his first football match and got me a ticket, so 3 generations of McLaughlins going together. The wee man is Celtic and Scotland daft and excited at seeing Callum.

BTW my pensioner concessionary ticket is £5. Well done SFA – fur wance.

  5. TOM MCLAUGHLIN @ 10:17 AM,

Well, that’s what’s confused me, what shortfall?

If we don’t budget for the money then there is no shortfall.

    DESSYBHOY @ 10:26 AM,

Weren’t we told that selling Dembele made up the shortfall!?

Well over 30 million in cash and other monies owing in that years interims.

    Confusing ain’t it;)

    Hail Hail

  6. Tom,

    Njoi yer day.

Scotland urnae far away from having a cracking team.

If only Celtic had a John Kennedy breaking through. A home grown CH is what I really want.

  7. Personally,I would think Gerrard would be a good choice for the Geordie’s.His name in England is instant bling.

They love a good England football hero, them Englanders.

  8. Enjoy Tom.Here’s hoping they win.

Should be easy with that useless Biton playing for Israel.Would not be in most of the posters on here’s team,so will probably be MOTM.

    Oh aye.

It’s not a shortfall in the sense that budgets were adversely affected. The gap between EL and CL income is a measurable figure, regardless of what has and has not been budgeted for. The gap was therefore mitigated by the compensation for Brendan – also unbudgeted.

I think you are getting tied up in semantics.

  11. TOM MCLAUGHLIN @ 11:29 AM,

You get to the heart of the matter, if and as no one has suggested otherwise I’ll take it to be the case, there was no gap to bridge then why fabricate a shortfall.

If a CQN lead is using semantics to mislead readers and deflect from the realities of events then surly it is worth unknoting.

Enjoy the game, great to have three generations!!

    Hail Hail

  12. Turkeybhoy – I politely disagree. The Newcastle boardroom’s ambition will now be to put together a coaching staff and team that, within 5 years, can be competing with Bayern Munich, Mardrid, PSG etc. Money no object. They need a TOP coach, one who has been there, done it and got the trophies. One who is still there, operating at the very top and can name his price to move there. One who can manage a galaxy of ultra rich kids and their egos.

This will be like watching Man City’s journey back from obscurity all over again. That is going to be their benchmark. Money buys titles in the EPL and gets you CL semi finals and finals.

Thanks to CRC, the funds have now been transferred

With the family knowing how much loved their Dad was in our community

  15. Have a fine day, Tom. Not a fan of Internationals myself but a day out at the football with a son and a grandson would more than make up for that.

  16. Tom McLaughlin on

My wife and I had our 2 grandsons – 3 and 6 – on a sleepover last night.

Their maternal grandfather is a Hearts ST holder. A month or so ago, they were singing the ‘Hearts Hearts glorious Hearts’ song.

I asked them who taught them that.

“My other grandad,” came the reply.

Within an hour I had them singing ‘Celtic Celtic that’s the team for me’. They now regularly sing it right through, unprompted.

Imagine my surprise when last night the 3 year old sang another version of the Hearts song – Hearts Hearts boring old farts.

Oh how I laughed. My wife not so much. I enquired as to who taught them that. Turns out it was my other son, their uncle Kevin.

My missus asked if they had sung that new version in front of their Hearts grandad.

    “Not yet.”

    Kids eh?

  17. Tom

Many Celtic supporters equate Hearts with the Huns but the only Jambo I know is a Shop Steward,anti-Monarchy and hates the Huns !! Indeed, his dislike of Them is greater than his loathing of Hibs ! Celtic come joint third with Aberdeen :-)

  18. Chairboy

I seem to remember something being said, a few years ago, about our club budgeting for CL group stages in 2 or 3 seasons every 5 years.

Not sure if this was/is still the case.

Given our recent record, you’d hope it’s no longer the case.

    HH

  19. Call me Gerry – likewise.Only a few short years ago I think the Club “expected” to play group stages every couple of years.

  20. TB- Out of interest, howmuch would we get for Bitton and Taylor, and what level of club would buy them?

  21. CHAIRBHOY @ 11:44 AM,

Apologies Harry should obviously have been Garry.

CALL ME GERRY @ 12:10 PM,

A while back I suggested that if we invested more in the team and set up then we could expect to be in the UCL 2 or 3 times in 5 years.

I’m not sure that was ever said to be a strategy by “someone in the know”. It certainly wasn’t one adopted by the Board, the opposite in fact.

My feeling is that we have relied too heavily on “trusted sources” in the past, I’m sure they were well meaning, they may even have got information straight from inside Celtic.

At the end of the day they were really disseminating misinformation.

Whatever the Board’s strategies have been over the last 15 years they have kept their cards veey close to their chest.

    Hail Hail

  22. Newcastle’s biggest task is to find a competent and experienced Director of Football, of the highest calibre, who will then appoint a Head Coach and all other heads of the football department. They will not, unlike a PLC we all know, put the cart in front of the horse and appoint a Head Coach first! por cierto

  23. Por Cierto

The story is that they’ll sack Bruce before the next league game

They need to keep Newcastle in the EPL, so you’d expect them to appoint someone to do it ASAP.

  24. BADA,

No idea. The question should be,how much would it cost to replace Taylor,to the level so many on here seem to expect.

As I said, when he is fit he will be our LB.Ange picks the team, thank God.How many games have we won when he has been out of the team.A bit like the Jamesy phenomenon.Again, not liked by quite a few on here.

If I am wrong about Ange having Taylor as his LB,by all means get back and tell me I was wrong.

Biton.Lets see how he performs later.

  25. I was being a bit tongue in cheek about Gerrard going to Newcastle, and after reading what one of the manky mob wrote,

“Rangers should give Gerrard a 5 year contract then when Newcastle come begging, make them pay £ 200 million to take him”

    I don’t see it happening,somehow,LOL.

  26. TB

Boyata wasn’t sold when Fulham wanted to buy him, presumably we had nobody identified as a replacement , 9 or 10 million was the fee , so he went in the huff missed a CL qualifier which we lost and then ran down his contract and moved to the Bundesliga for nada, the release amount for Rogers made up for this, apologies if my phrasing made it difficult to understand.

  27. Does the post paucity mean that :

    a) The regulars are off to Hampden;

    b) The majority are awaiting the return of Celtic football?

I kind of wish I was interested in the Scotland game but the combination of Scottish Media,Scottish ref`s and the anti-Celtic sentiment prevalent in The Establishment here makes such interest unlikely.
