The most remarkable thing you’ll read about Celtic fans this year

Something remarkable starts today. A few hours ago, members of the Tyneside No. 1 Celtic Supporters’ Club, and others, started walking in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales. They plan to walk all the way to Celtic Park between now and 22 October.

The day they are scheduled to arrive at Paradise will be the first anniversary of the passing of Jonathan Thomas (above), a former member of the Tyneside CSC who died aged 30, after a battle with that most indiscriminate of illnesses.

Jonathan arrived in Newcastle 10 years ago from his native Wales, where he had been coached by a Celtic fan from Belfast. He joined the club and started making the pilgrimage north each home game to see Celtic.

While we all do the odd thing to mark the founding spirit of our club, Jonathan did far more than most. Alongside other Tyneside No. 1 CSC members, he walked from Newcastle to Celtic Park, then cycled from Swansea to the same destination, and completed the West Highland Way, all for Celtic charities.

Then he was taken from his family, friends and wife Sian, who he married a day before he lost his battle.

I don’t fancy walking from Merthyr Tydfil to Celtic Park, there are easier things to do in life, but when you learn what Jonathan did to raise money to help others, it seems like a reasonable undertaking in his name.

Sian, Iain McGovern (a good friend of mine), and the others will have left Merthyr already. They face an incredible journey, but two weeks from now they will walk up the Celtic Way and know they’ve lived up to the spirit of Jonathan, as well as our common 128-year heritage.

Money raised is going to the Celtic FC Foundation and Crohn’s & Colitis UK (despite what he did for our good causes, Jonathan also suffered from Colitis, a debilitating condition). This is a great Celtic supporters’ story. We’re so lucky to have people like this stand with us each week.  If you can help their efforts, here, please do so.

Robertson was Scotland’s MOTM, shows how bad they were. In fairness to him when he was in positions to play it in the middle there’s no one to hit, Martin is a statue.

Delaney’s , Diego is revered even more in Naples than he is in Argentina .

A flawed genius but what a football player who is loathed by some of the English media which to me is a plus point for him.

Ah’m wi’ you. Didnae watch the game; suspected it would be garbage when I saw the team.

Scottish POTY and YPOTY (both with European experience) benched. James Forrest is on fire and is benched.

If he was looking to keep players fresh for the next game, it’s poor management. Win yer next game, it’s the most important!

Dropping points at home to Lithuania, Slovenia, Slovakia or Malta is unacceptable!

Looking for a bit of advice and I’m sure one of you good Bhoys will be able to help me out.

I want to buy my 8 month old grandson some Celtic shares for his Christmas.

I’m looking for a certificate I can frame with his name on it, and when he is a bit older be able to go to the AGM and vote.

    Any help greatfully appreciated.

Martin did score against Malta, but he has not scored in twenty club games on his travels.

Surely Fletcher a better bet to start. Griff had been injured but made a difference later in the game.

  8. ‘Forrest should have scored, Griffiths should have scored’. If only Scotland were as consistent as that little rat McCann.

I tried boxing in Argo Drumchapel as a 13 year old. Toughest sport I tried and chucked it. Respect to the likes of Ricky Burns who fight out of their concrete jungle and make it to the top. Magic

who did Celtic beat 5-1, charge £50 for a league game and handed CCTV images over to the cops recently? Was it Gretna?

  12. It was a poor performance from Scotland tonight. Turgid and boring as was the England vs Malta match earlier. Suspect the Slovenia Slovakia match was not exciting either. We may not have a lot of entertainment to look forward to.

Thought Robertson and Bannan were the pick of an average bunch. Hanley and Calum Paterson are both defensive liabilities though both are competent in the opposition box.

Our equaliser came from our two poorest performers Hanley and McArthur. The crowd seemed to twig early on that a borefest was on the cards. We need at least a draw in Slovakia to recover this lost ground.

During the game I kept comparing Robertson to our young fella and with respect to the boy Robertson, he is not a patch on KT, IMO.

To persist with Martin, Oh Dear, dreadful decision, as for the boy Burke, brutal he is, hadn’t heard of him till the Malta game, feckin brutal, keeping Forrest out another shocking decision.

Still am glad our bhoys didn’t get much game time, less chance of injuries, but v=can see them getting more on tuesday, desperation has set in.

Watched about 20 minutes of the Scotland game all in and it looked abject. The more international football I see the less i’m encouraged to watch anymore of it.

    Hurry back Celtic.

  22. It’s not his fault but Robertson is benefitting from the new fashion for lauding full backs who can “get up and down”.

While Scotland need all the help we s now get going forward if you’ve got a full back who can’t defend you’re asking for trouble

KT just scored against the unbeaten EPL leaders, he can clearly do the lot. He’ll get a game next week and probably get crticicsed when we get beaten

Yes i think the age of International football is over. Its crap. The Euros were crap.

However, in the last world cup it was wonderful watching the Germans destroy Brazil in Brazil then defeat Argentina in the finals and go down in history as a the only European nation or any non South American nation to win the WC in South America. That was something!

The 11 who played in Lisbon played together only one more time

*hate to be pedantic but they played in 4 of 5 League Cup games including the fabulous 3-1 victory over the deid team and the losing game against Dynamo Kiev in the EC.

However, they may have never played in a League game together.
