The most secure club in Europe

868

Ronny Deila has been talking about a treble since early in the season, far too early for my liking.  History suggests that trebles are notoriously difficult to win, even for dominant teams.  The league is usually won by the best team but it’s hard to win every game in two cup competitions, no matter how good you are.

Despite this, I’ll not bet against Ronny getting his wish.  He needs to win four games cup games, three of which would be at neutral Hampden, with only one game, the Scottish Cup quarter final, possibly being played away from home.

The cynic among you will, therefore, expect an away draw, possibly in some far-flung end of the country, like Inverness.  My money is on a trip to Easter Road.  I’ll be happy to avoid Tannadice, scene of our last defeat and a place they’re understandably feeling sort over the loss of Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.

People of Kirkcaldy: that whole 1994-Ibrox thing, forget about it, we’re OK.

Well done to Celtic for highlighting their position as the least likely football team to financially default, according the US rating agency, Standards & Poor’s.  Commercial and ticket income across Scottish football has fallen in recent years but that was only going to result in Armageddon if those in charge of clubs put an inflated sense of their own importance ahead of paying bills.

See the photo above sent by Mary’s Meals last week of the school kitchen we funded at CQ10.  Work is already underway to raise funds for a fourth CQN kitchen in Malawi after the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, on Friday 13 March at the Kerrydale Suite.  Email me for ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

jungle vip – you’re making a value judgement [while referring to the law, even stating elsewhere stating that ‘people have an obligation to obey the law. No more than that.’]

Yes. I’m making a value judgement that, in a free society, we have an obligation to obey the law. If I understand you correctly, you seem to believe we have a moral obligation to maximise our tax liability?

    Good luck with that.

So what if (with the stress being on that last word) the ‘top 1%’ [I presume you mean ‘top 15 of earners’, or maybe you do actually mean to imply something else] pay 25% of all tax?

Well, for one thing, it contradicts the idea that the well-off don’t pay tax. They pay huge sums of tax. They’re keeping the British government open for business.

Do they work significantly harder than their fellow countrymen who earn a mere fraction of what they earn?

In general, yes. To get to the top 1% of earners, you have to work bloody hard. Your average employee goes home at 5pm and switches off. Top earners are more likely to be glued to their Blackberries till ungodly hours, or working on a presentation for the next senior management meeting, or putting together a big damn spreadsheet while those with fewer responsibilities are watching Corrie.

Businesses expect blood, sweat and tears from their top earners. There’s no red carpet unfurled to you just because you went to the right schools.

Not that it really matters how hard you work, for we don’t pay people based on effort. We pay them based on results, and in accordance with supply and demand for their skills.

The guy who digs a trench with a teaspoon might put more effort in than a brain surgeon does in his job. But it’s the brain surgeon who’ll get the big bucks. And rightly so.

I’d go further to suggest that 99% of that top 1% enjoyed an immensely privileged upbringing, giving them access to resources and opportunities beyond the dreams of all but the most fortunate of their fellow citizens, thereby virtually assuring them of the feted life to which they have grown accustomed and which, by law, ought to be beyond the rest of us plebs.

So we should punish successful people out of class envy, eh? What could go wrong? (thumbsup)

  4. Philvis – your figure is wrong. The top earners do not pay 25% of all tax. It’s 25% of income tax. Which is a lot less than 25% of all tax. A whole lot less.

You need to talk about tax as,a proportion of income for it to mean anything and,if you do so you will find that the less well off pay far more than the wealthy. Hence the outcry when income tax goes up but not a peep when VAT or other indirect taxation is raised – it’s much easier to avoid or absorb when you are a top.bracket tax payer – that is,if your accountant let’s you pay it at all.

CQN not lazy right wing propaganda…..

  5. Been away for a while, so just chipping in with a few remarks.I’m happy with the draw. I want us to play the best teams and play the best football when we play the best teams. Dundee Utd will work us hard and it should be a great test of our credentials.

Alfie Noakes@14.29 – That is a formidable list of fixtures alright! As you say though, really looking forward to it.

McCullough is literally getting away with assault, week in, week out in Scotland. Madden was never going to red card him. This compliance officer guy needs to step in. Either that, or opposing players will take the law into their own hands and get their retaliation in first (which may be no bad thing in his case!)

  6. There’s a strong chance of a second-tier team reaching the final. Do the Cup runners-up still qualify for Europe?

roberttressell – I know my friend in Celtic.

That’s why I said income tax.

You need to talk about tax as,a proportion of income for it to mean anything

Completely disagree. What we should care about is outcomes.

It doesn’t benefit us any if a man who has nothing but a pocketful of cat hair to his name pays 99% of it in tax. He is not contributing more to the common treasury than a billionaire who pays “only” 10% tax.

It’s the total sums of money that should concern us, not the share of income. We can’t pay nurses and teachers with good intentions and warm fuzzies.

He’s probably right. It’s basically a team beating a team four places higher in the league.

For two years they – assisted by the msm – tried to kid on that they were one of the top two teams in the land and were only out of the top league because of” “punishment” from their “enemies”.

Now they are 19 points behind a Hearts team that finished 76 points behind Celtic last season it makes it difficult to keep up this myth. Not that the msm are likely to stop however!

  26. Philvis @ 15:04

I know you to be a clever guy, Philvis, so I’m going to hazard a guess that you’re misrepresenting me: at no time have I ever held a view that one has any sort of responsibility (moral or otherwise) to pay more tax than one ought.

Nor (despite there being some evidence in the public domain to suggest that several (not-just-wealthy-but-seriously-rich) family dynasties have gone to great lengths to avoid paying tax on their incomes) have I ever suggested that well-off types don’t pay tax.

The tax system in the UK is unfair: for purely selfish, party political reasons; it uses a stick for the poor and a carrot for the wealthy.

Likewise, I understand that very many high earners work ‘bloody hard’. But so do very many more low earners, with limited means to lift themselves out of relative poverty.

You know this to be true, but you favour a system in which top earners are incentivized, while low earners (and others unable to earn much at all) are often characterized as ‘undeserving poor’.

Perhaps there would be a few more people willing to put together ‘big damn spreadsheets’ if they were getting paid an hourly rate several orders of magnitude greater that the national minimum wage … then receiving a tax-free bonus as well.

And don’t kid yourself that there’s no ‘red carpet’ out there.

You know fine well that where one is born has an enormous effect on one’s life chances: if born (like you) into an aspiring, white middle class family, with encouragement and opportunities aplenty, you stand a massively better chance of winding up in a top-paying career, meeting a nice partner from a well-to-do family, in a well paid profession, and so on.

That’s got nothing whatsoever to do with the supply and demand most young people will encounter when they reach their late teens or early twenties.

I’ll give you a very simple, real life example I observed recently: I work near a building with a number of stock-broker, legal and accountancy firms. Last autumn, as 4th year kids around the country were trying to fix up work placements, almost every morning for a few weeks I saw parents escorting their children into these same offices to help arrange work placements for their offspring. What sort of school uniforms do you think were worn by the kids in this procession?

The same scene was doubtless being played out in countless businesses around the country.

So don’t kid yourself that connections don’t confer further advantage on the already advantaged.

Few, if any, of those getting work experience at Asda, Yarrows, Scotrail, their local school or library, or social work department are ever going to have a chance to rack up 7 figure salaries for working bloody hard over a blackbury or spreadsheet, or in an operating theatre.

Nor have suggested punishing successful people: so you’re barking up the wrong tree there, too …

  27. CQN is nice place to be in these days. Don’t know about anyone else but loving football just now.

As someone who started going to games with my mates, and no my dad, in the 80s (Real QF big cup to be exact) watching the highlights of a packed pitrodrie at the weekend, and the big games against utd, remind me of the days when scottish football was last rated number one in Europe.

It did actually happen – we were top nation in Europe and Huns were struggling to get above St Mirren in front of 9000 crowds. it’s early days but I think we might be making moves back in that direction. hail hail!

  28. Look beyond the headlines of the Wotte article and the Agenda is clear.

Wotte reckons the Premiership is too small and there should be a 16-team top flight.

  29. Steinreignedsupreme on

A tough draw for Celtic. Games against Dundee United at Tannadice are always tough.

But I’d rather play United at Tannadice than Spartans at Celtic Park. Last week was a reminder that games against lower-league opponents come under the ‘no-win’ bracket for Celtic.

At least there will be genuine enthusiasm and excitement for the United game.
