Last month we heard from one of our community, RalphWaldoEllison (John), whose adult son, Tony Conway, has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the same strain of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) that claimed Jimmy Johnstone almost six years ago.
Tony, John and their families now live in the United States, but they, along with Tony’s brother Martin, are travelling to Scotland this weekend to watch Celtic play Dundee United. They will be here for a total of around 48 hours but I will get a chance to meet them and they are going to the game with Jinky’s son, James Johnstone.
I spoke to James last month and he relayed Jinky’s strong views on research into MND. The fight against this disease will be won one day but there is a great deal of research and political effort required before then. Tony has committed himself to this end.
This morning James Johnstone told me: “My Dad was my hero and I took great pride in the way he fought this horrible disease, it’s great to see the same attitude in Tony. I know how much my Dad loved the Celtic fans and his answer to this would be to help get a cure for MND. Hail, hail.”
I encourage you to visit Tony’s blog dontshrink.com, learn about the condition and leave him a message of support. The Celtic Movement began by putting food in front of hungry children 124 years ago and it remains one of the most able forces for good in the land. We can pick up this challenge.

You evidently know as little about the economics of agriculture as you do about, well, on the evidence on here, just about everything.
…………
My Fiancees cousin is a Farmer and I know how hard a Farmers life is. They still make a comfortable living, but have to try and come up with different income streams and work long hours in the dark and cold weather.
You seem to have a hatred for any SNP policy and anybody who owns land (Land Owning Classes) and makes money from it! Why is that?

‘ernie,
Not sure I’m following you; doesn’t the Scottish Government pay a subsidy to windfarm developers?’
Not that I’m aware of.
The subsidy is a consequence of the Scottish Renewables Obligation regime.
Basically electricity suppliers have to ensure that a certain percentage of the electricity they supply comes from renewables. If they fail to meet the target they suffer a financial penalty. This allows renewable suppliers to charge a premium, which pushes up the price the consumer has to pay.
Basically the wealthy are getting wealthier on the backs of the rest of us.

greenjedi,
why is that important to you ?
poitics is corruption, but there are plenty of good people who do try,
galloway, benn that I know of, I’m sure here a plenty more, problem is those with integrity rarely get invited, and thats accross the board not just socialists.
Afternoon Celts, St Johnstone are fifth in the league and only 19 points behing Scotlands shame, that’s do-able innit :¬)
Awe naw may I add my birthday wishes to the rest ……… I hope you’re pubbing it !

Joe Filippis Haircut
I havent looked at the stats but seem to remember hearing prior to Christmas that he was out of favour and on the bench quite a bit. We could take him on loan till the end of the season with an option to buy. This would be a win/win for Celtic, as it would give us a quality striker and more time to scout somebody else for long term purposes.
My prefered choice would be Rhodes, but the fact that there were 8 EPL clubs watching him bang in 5 last week, tells me we wont be able to compete with transfer fee and wages.

Afternoon Bhoys, On the energy question does anyone here read the Post Carbon Institute’s website? Very good in my opinion.
re the auld energy debate……. I’d stick a wind turbine on top of the shiny new Nuclear power station ….. keep everybody happy :¬)

I see we share a birthday.
Have a good day old bhoy
brimmer
A bit off topic guys, I flew to the states a couple of days ago after the death of one of my sisters here. Very emotional time it’s been but with help of my good woman and family as well as being able to keep my mind occupied by coming on here. I leave in half an hour for the service but just wanted to say some words on here as I’m not much good at speaking to the people round about me without getting too emotionali.
After my family it’s Celtic all the way.
Hope my bhoy enjoys the game this sat with thanks to doctastic for taking him along.
Hail hail from New York NY.
Enough hot air in the Scottish parliament to light and heat up the whole country, imo of course.
brimmer,
happy buffday to you too.
GourockEmraldBhoy,
condolences on you loss.
dirtmac – I agree in part. Wave power has great potential and obviously needs more investment in terms of reasearch & development. I think at present (although I may be wrong) it is about 5-10 years behind wind energy in terms of practicalities.
The other major area that requires R&D investment (and is beginning to get some) is energy storage on an industrial scale – that would see the practical/technical drawbacks of wind & wave power reduced making the shutdown of windfarms because there’s too much power in the grid a thing of the past. I reckon 6 9V rechargeable batteries strapped together with gaffa tape should do the job.
Ernie – you’re right and wrong. A small amount of the subsidies will com e from consumers. Energy companies buy power from the windfarm operators (and other renewable generators) along with paying for certificates showing that a certain percentage of their power comes from renewable sources. These are used as a measure of a supplier’s renewable commitment and they are re-imbursed in part by Ofgem. I agree though that energy pricing is unfair to those on lower incomes.
Big generalisation…footballers generally not the brightest guys you’ll ever meet .. Obviously there are exception….
I find it inconceivable that even the daftest of players would enter a contract with a club who may go bust imminently…Aluko obviously an exception, but how many others are risking their careers/livelihoods with a team who might fold???
Maybe if you are 32 you are only looking 6 months ahead hence their inability to sign anyone with sell on potential?

……………..
Its not important to me, just making the point that power and money corrupts politicians, not just socialists! And btw the Galloway & Benn are loaded, I don’t see them redistributing the wealth!
Cults….,
as I said last night, the agents are the drivers and I expect to see a few in court over the next year for badly advising their clients to join the monkeys.
brimmer happy birthday!

If I were contemplating signing for the Huns, I’d need my contract paid up in advance, certainly 6 month advance installments as a minimum….
How likely is that?
You could be right re agents but I’d imagine players would have few legs to stand on as it’s hardly a secret that all is not well at Ibrokes..
greenjedi,
the ‘they’re loaded’ argument is out and out drivel, why should successful people b expected to give away their money because of their political beliefs, the church in rome is absolutely loaded they are Christian and should give it all away, is the exact same stupid argument, but IMO a lot more valid.
The redistribution of wealth can be achieved without making beggars of everyone.
I’m relatively well off, my socialist beliefs dont demand that I give it away or that I earn too much, as far as I’m concerned everyone should be making the same kind of money.
**NEW ARTICLE POSTED HALF AN HOUR AGO** ;-)
Thanks Jobo and has my magazine been posted yet lol
