The news is not the headlines, it’s the ABC figures

303

Why the disbelief that a Tom Boyd comment on Celtic TV on Saturday is still occupying news inches on Tuesday?  Tom did not indulge in profanity or prejudice; he merely made a partisan comment on an in-house broadcast channel.  But here’s the thing, he did so on a quiet news day.

Had Celtic lost to Dunfermline on Saturday, Tom’s profound musings would never have been reported, the 24-hour news cycle would have been filled by more important matters.

The football news industry, of which we are all consumers, requires stories, even when nothing of note happens.  The pressures of being a staff reporter at a media outlet, which is perpetually downsizing, when your job is to deliver a story people want to read and there is just no story to tell, should be clear to understand.

This is not justification for throwing Tom under the ink barrel, but it should temper our engagement with the process.  For reasons that escape my memory right now, we do not have a game tonight or tomorrow, so we might have to wait until Thursday before Ever-Green-TB gets a break.

Until then, the news is not the headlines; it’s the ABC circulation figures, which are again heavy with red ink.  The Record, which sold over 500k copies per day when CQN started 15 years ago, shipped 110k last month, a 78% fall in unit sales, the same is true elsewhere.  This is why Tom Boyd became a multi-day story.  It could be anyone tomorrow.

We do sign prospects. They are usually referred to disparagingly as “projects” and not given a chance to develop.

    __

Sure but we’ve been late to the party with so many prospects playing under our noses. Snodgrass, McCarthy, McGinn, Robertson (when he was at Dundee United)

I was hoping David Turnbull was a turning point in that regard…

  2. I agree with those who say the team & the fans urgently need a lift. Wanyama or Benkovic or preferably both on loan would do it for me. Rumours are growing that Kent will be back on loan with the Huns. IMO he was one of their best players last year and I would have been glad to see the back of him.

I would see myself as one of the calmer souls on here but even now I am beginning to get frustrated at the lack of action.

I suspect we are waiting to see whether we qualify for Europa Group Stage before we buy. I expect 2 full backs will be bought either way but we might be more likely to spend more on them if we are guaranteed European Football and the 10 million it would bring.

If we do not spend & buy wisely or get in good loanees the 9 in a row is in danger, the Board & Lenny won’t be forgiven if that goes belly up.

PL has managed over £100m additional revenue from player sales and CL money he is up against a group that are in debt and in court more than most yet he has lost that dominant position by poor management of managers and a lack of structure around our recruitment

    —————————————————————————————————–

Waiting for Sevco to implode while we count our mountain of cash brings to mind Nero and fiddles.

Despite their perilous position they have spent (someone’s?) money and have improved . This would defy logic in any other league , but if it’s not obvious by now that they will never be allowed to disappear , then it damn well should be.

Are we happy to keep pursuing this strategy until 10 iar is lost along with the only chance to reach the CL that is available?

9 in a row has already been put in danger. The Board are a busted flush and on a hiding to nothing. Appointing Neil Lennon and openly admitting they did not consider anyone else backed them into a corner they will struggle to get out of. That said i personally think Lenny is a decent Manager and can dig out 85-90 points in the League which may be enough. But i fear that the tide of public opinion is severely against him and in Glasgow that normally only ends one way.

  5. the issue that i have is that we have spent more than £11m+ on our recruitment so far and none of them have set the heather on fire or are auto first team choice or ready.

  6. a keeper, left back, right back, centre half, striker were a must before this window…we have let loads go…all these positions are still a must.

as for “wont be forgiven”… I would want them in Gaol

Forster, Wanyama (Loan), Benkovic, O’Donnell, Taylor and a striker on loan…..go get it done Celtic. the money is there…by god the money is there, and more, but is the will.

Can’t argue with that though I would add that we can’t sign every bright prospect and so it comes back again to scouting and having the right eye for a player. The other side of that coin of course has to be an acknowledgement and acceptance that not every prospect will come good. Which immediately strikes me as a contradiction to a point I made earlier about our perceived high failure rate with players.

  8. I thought Paul Elliot. looked gross first time I saw him…a yard off pace but you could see the player.. ..we were meant to be signing players to go straight in team for qualifiers.. none of signing were

  9. Kilmarnock have signed a left back on loan from QPR. Is that the hold up on signing Greg Taylor now removed?

I agree with that. I suppose I believe we have undervalued Scottish prospects. I know that these signings are usually unpopular with fans (there’s been a lot of handwringing over Taylor for example)

At £900k Taylor is worth a go.

I think the real danger is loosing more of our better players not the lack of new signings

  14. Greg Taylor should have been signed last summer as back up for KT. Given KTs injuries he would have played around 30 games for us last season and we could have had a smooth transition with him taking over as first choice this season and been in place for the CL qualifiers. Bolingoli could then have come in and been given time to settle Into the club/country.

That however would be forward planning, having a clear concise recruitment strategy. If only….

Agree with BOURNESRECIP. Its distracting from the problems we should be talking about. We’ve levelled the playing field and left the money in the bank. Neil Lennon keeps coming out with statements that suggest he thinks we’re stupid. ‘The board have been first class with me’. Yeah right. Problem is he knows how lucky he is to have the gig. Switch the wingers and cross the ball to the non-existent number 9. Don’t worry about stats or defensive shape.

Remind me how much he cost?

    Boli Bolingoli?

    Same as Christopher Jullien…

…Insofar as both fees were undisclosed. I’m guessing the fees would be made up of such things as UCL participation, games played, International Caps etc.

Actually you mis-remembered it, as people have chosen to do on forums ever since it was uttered.

What was actually said was “we aim to come out of each window stronger than we came in”. It was an aspiration and not a promise.

I have written this self same post to around 20 individual posters over the past 5 years or so.

And, no, I don’t think the clarification will appease anyone I just believe it’s fairer to hang someone for what they did or said than for what we imagined they said.

  23. If we dont strengthen this window and the Huns stop us winning 9 in a row this season there are a lot of fans who, quite simply, will have had enough and will not ever come back or put another penny into the club

Not challenging the years of cheating, the same club myth and stalling on Resolution 12 can be ignored as long as we are winning. The minute it stops all hell will break loose

I think this is correct – there will be many that never come back if we don’t get 9IAR.

Entirely up to them and their decision.

But not me. Nor any of my mates or family.

Celtic is a part of our being and culture. I went all through the 90’s which was as bad as I’ve experienced.

Getting the 9th league in a row doesn’t come close.

We’re all free to make our own decisions and I won’t criticise anyone who wants to chuck it for whatever reason.

But I’m all in mate. End of.

The Cluj result – and performance – sucked the life out me so much that this is the first day since that I have returned to read the blogs and news feeds.

Actually quite heartened to read the disrespectful crap from the likes of AIK’s Elyounoussi and their fans on social media about us.

They seem to think they smell blood in the water. And if that lack of respect doesn’t galvanise the dressing room and kick-start a reaction on the pitch I’ll be amazed.

AIK are eminently beatable, if we don’t beat ourselves first.

I hope we properly click and spank them out of sight on Thursday, the arrogant twats.

Which I am confident we will, with the right attitude and if we take a crack at playing players in their correct positions.

Hoping to be in Stockholm for the return. Last time I made it to an away game in Europe was Molde. I never ever want that feeling again.

This post BTW is not a deflection away from the very obvious and serious faults in our set-up from boardroom to dugout. I’ve been following Celtic since 1965, back in those unsophisticated days when “risk-averse management” was called, simply, “the biscuit tin”, and everybody knew what the F you meant.

It’s been embedded in Celtic’s culture for as long as I can remember, and I am sick of it.

Some things this summer have been positive.

Trimming a bloated squad was long, long overdue.

(I wonder if the ridiculous size of our squad was an attempt at joining the Man Citys and Chelseas in hoovering up prospects on long contracts and treating them like milk-cows, loaning them out in the hope that someone will at some point come in with an inflated offer.

If so, it was doomed. Brendan Rodgers, at the beginning of his time with us, is on record as saying that he prefers working with smaller, tighter squads and that ours was too big.

Then he spent 2 years making it bigger.)

Reducing the wage bill, which was getting twitchily big, was a positive.

The negatives include failure to address the fact that Rodgers ripped out the heart of the backroom staff. And we urgently need a DoF to ensure continuity, and to confine Lawwell to what he is actually good at, which is sums.

But most of all, we need to change the model. Picking up some of the best young prospects in the UK and Europe, and developing them, is of course the way to go.

But these guys have to be supported by real quality – one or two signings from the middle/top drawer to drag the youngsters up a level or two and keep the quality up.

    Like Ajax does.
