The news is not the headlines, it’s the ABC figures

303

Why the disbelief that a Tom Boyd comment on Celtic TV on Saturday is still occupying news inches on Tuesday?  Tom did not indulge in profanity or prejudice; he merely made a partisan comment on an in-house broadcast channel.  But here’s the thing, he did so on a quiet news day.

Had Celtic lost to Dunfermline on Saturday, Tom’s profound musings would never have been reported, the 24-hour news cycle would have been filled by more important matters.

The football news industry, of which we are all consumers, requires stories, even when nothing of note happens.  The pressures of being a staff reporter at a media outlet, which is perpetually downsizing, when your job is to deliver a story people want to read and there is just no story to tell, should be clear to understand.

This is not justification for throwing Tom under the ink barrel, but it should temper our engagement with the process.  For reasons that escape my memory right now, we do not have a game tonight or tomorrow, so we might have to wait until Thursday before Ever-Green-TB gets a break.

Until then, the news is not the headlines; it’s the ABC circulation figures, which are again heavy with red ink.  The Record, which sold over 500k copies per day when CQN started 15 years ago, shipped 110k last month, a 78% fall in unit sales, the same is true elsewhere.  This is why Tom Boyd became a multi-day story.  It could be anyone tomorrow.

  1. NATKNOW,

You speak for me and most of the supporters I know.

I have been watching Celtic since the 50s and much of that time we weren’t even also rans. Then, as my Dad never fails to remind me, Big Jock came and things have never been the same since, including the 90s.

Thanks for reply . £5 m would be half of what is quoted elsewhere but figures bandied about tend to be somewhat speculative . In any case , we don’t need £5m sitting on a bench. I have a sneaking feeling Julien and Boli will come good but I’m maybe being optimistic.

I know 3 lifetime fans (130 years total) who will do “the walking away” in that event. It will not be the results per se, (we have been through enough bad times). Rather, it is the parochial lack of ambition, the gutless lack of support for the Res 12 requisitioners who provided the evidence of rampant corruption, the denigration of the support by the Board Chairman, the utterly incoherent succession planning, and the lifeline thrown to our bankrupt deadly enemy across the City that provide the impetus.

    CORKCELT

You may be correct, but we will not know if we made the Europa Group Stage until August 29. The transfer deadline is September 2. Given our lethargic apathy for months, do you really think we are capable of pulling rabbits out of a hat in 3 or 4 days? And for those pining for Wanyama, it appears that he will be loaned to Bruge, if they overcome LASK of Austria to make the CL Group Stage.

I am also in that age bracket and while football has changed out of all recognition since the mid 60’s , I still have a tiny spark of hope that we may have another ‘ big Jock’ type awakening.

Good to hear mate. Celtic fans have often been at odds with the board or custodians or whatever they want to deem themselves this week.

The fact is that the fans are Celtic and Celtic is the fans. It’s an article of faith and a cultural phenomenon as much as a sports club. The fans will be here after Peter Lawwell, Ian Bankier etc. are dead and buried. Not that I’m wishing that on them.

    Faithful through and through.

  6. BSR @ 7:12 PM,

“As it stands I’d be very surprised £5M the pair…

That based on their performances so far?”

Not necessarily, although we can look at players and have an opinion of their qualities and worth.

I said at the time of their signing (obviously not knowing the individual players) that they seemed like good signings, the sort of signings we should be making.

A £7M Centre Half should do very well in the SPL and be European standard.

A £3M Belguim left back prospect should be great cover for KT. Think I stated if we could get him UCL experience and an International Cap his value could soar.

Of course the jury is out on both these guys and I’m not accepying the Jullien unfit at this stage of the Season in any way shape or form.

So I checked up on how much we actually paid for these guys…

    …UNDISCLOSED!!

As a wiser man than I once said…

    …MMMMMMmmmmmmmmm

Of course it depends how you work the arithmatic.

I see – BSR @ 12:33 PM – your maths us getting better;)

    GLENDALYSTONSILS @ 7:47 PM,

    Totally agree!

Fees are made up of a lot of add-ons, if these guys are on the bench their “speculative” fees are inaccurate.

I’m not sure if this would be related, if it is I’d be seriously worried for Lenny.

But my opinion was we stopped playing the loanees last season (Weah, Burke and Toljan) to save money.

If someone has Lenny under the thumb re selections (i.e. putting N’tcham in the shop window) with NL’s history, they’d better start taking a long hard look at themselves.

Yep. I get that and agree that the ambitions of the fans is often at odds with those of the board. Always ever was.

As I say, if people want to walk away then that’s their right and no-one will stop them and truly held convictions are beyond name calling.

The actions or inactions of the Celtic board do not dictate my identity. As I’ve mentioned above – they’ll all be dead and buried and Celtic will still be here.

  9. Still no signings from those penny pinching bas***s of a board ? Roll up Roll up spend all yer cash and we promise we’ll spend f**k all in return.

We are weaker now but the bank balance is looking mighty fine.

  10. I am kind of optimistic about sevco playing Legia Warsaw in the Europa qualifier on Thursday.

That will be three seasons of Europa Qualifiers completed by the newco and surely it is the first time they have actually drawn a team I have actually heard of!

How does that work then with a team that has no co-efficient points?

How have even Aberdeen managed to play a Premier League team in an early qualifier [Burnley last season] yet all sevco have played is amateurs and unknowns?

  11. People claiming that defeat against Cluj cost us around £40m do realise that Slavia Prague would’ve been next and they are better than both Cluj and us…

  12. prestonpans bhoys on

Cost us £40m , wouldn’t matter if it was £140m. Cash wouldn’t be destined to a team build anyway

  13. From P_67

We got knocked out the champions league a week ago the night. We play our Europa League qualifier in under 48 hours and still we haven’t made a signing. We still don’t even have a suitable LB at the club hahahaha

Think a lot of folk forget how tough the Slavia game would be. interesting to see what they do to Cluj……..

  15. glendalystonsils on

Cluj looking very ordinary . Slavia much more of an attacking threat and they look like they would have given us problems . Come to think of it , with defending like ours last week , anybody would give us problems.

Maybe next season we’ll get to test ourselves in the final qualifying round. Watching Cluj in that first half had me shaking my head to think they put us out.

  16. With £40M at stake, both teams really going at it. Think what £40M would mean to Cluj, who have spent less than $600,000 in transfer fees in 2 years.

Do you know how much Hatem Abd Elhamed cost us…

…£1.3M – disclosed. Worth the money? I’d say.

Look at your inner cynic and tell me…

    Jullien, Boli, £10M.

Worth the money? You tell me.

    Hail Hail

  19. prestonpans bhoys on

They way you guys are going on you would think having loads of money would give you a sporting advantage………sounds familiar😵

  20. Could be worse. I once thought Paul Lambert was destined to be a future Celtic manager. Looks like he’s a game or two from the sack at Ipswich. Coaching courses money well spent…

  21. From TheTributeAct

    Still waiting on answers.

Will any journalist that has written a story on the Tom Boyd controversy please comment on whether it was a penalty?

If yes- by what logic could Beaton have failed to give it?

Is Beaton’s motivation or competence a reasonable topic for discussion?

  22. CHAIRBHOY

Leaving ‘The BIG’ summer signings on the bench because you think it’s safer, in a £40M football match, sent shockwaves, defeat made a already bad situation worse.

“ The board have been great with me “

Can be attributed to BR and NFL but only because they both accepted initially, the parameters in which they’d work.

Tough, tough start for Neil Lennon elected unopposed.

  23. prestonpans bhoys on

It’s depressing watching this, we should be capable of knocking both these teams out. More depressing to be told the previous round result😈😈

And Cluj mlss a penalty too
